YES, wearing a weave in Nigeria is a status symbol. and the reason why i laid emphasis on Nigerian women is because their own no get part two. look at Beyonce, she may wear a lot of weave and makeup, but its TASTEFULLY done. has anyone seen Stephanie Okereke and Ini Edo and their weaves of recent? TOO MUCH! not only that but movies like Pleasure Boosters, Mirror of Life, and some other Nollywood movies where they wear these hideous lace wigs, too tight clothes, and the worst makeup ever. heavy green eyeshadow, with too much rosy blush, with a bright, bold, and glossy red lip. YUK. and you can say its just the movies, but im seeing it on the red carpets too.
CAN WE GO BACK TO THE 90s PLEASE?! that was the peak of the BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN.
I don't want to be judgmental based on comments i have seen but Nigerians are very stylish. My best friend is Nigerian and i am Spanish and she is super fun and beautiful. She supplies me the local traditional wear and i also love your skin. But i really think you guys copy fashion o hard and add so much extras leave the extras and be moderate... The hair is too much and make up is oily.
i agree with alicia. and @anon insulting alicia the problem is that beyonce and co wear their weaves well most of the time but nigerians make weaves look like horse's hair. they make it look very artificial and ugly. 22 inches of hair will look horrendous on anybody even inidians who have waist length hair cut it. chioma looks horrible not that she knows what suits her cuz she always has the worst hairstyles and outfits. nobody looks good i'm sorry to say.

Monalisa actually looked nice for once in the weave dept..it wasn't falling around all over the place...if u are beautiful u are beautiful..weaves dont do much to enhance..in fact they often tend to age one quite a bit..i attended a wedding here in Los Angeles yesterday, and the ladies that stood out looking edgy had short and sassy beautiful youthful hair cuts...was quite impressed...

In defense of Alicia, Noella et al, these are Nigerian actresses being discussed on a blog that is predominantly about Nigerians and their social/political lives ergo people will tend to say "this Nigerians" etc etc. So it isn't simple a blatant attack on Nigerians, if it was Beyonce wearing a jacked up weave (which will never happen), Alicia would rip her too. Alicia is an equal opportunity abuser, whether it is Beyonce, Kelly, Naomi, Tyra OR Stephanie Okereke, Genevieve, Omotola, Ini or Kate Henshaw Nuttal, she will speak the truth from her perspective.
Chioma Chukwuka has tried but she hasn't succeeded in developing that "it" thing that makes a person come across as a star. She has tried but that finesse has eluded her and to tell the truth, she is a far better actress than Mona Lisa Chinda. Let's be honest, the weave is JACKED. She could have done a better job. And while we...well, I am being honest, it is true that Nigerian women as a whole as seen on the societal pages of magazines are seemingly trying to detach from their culture and embarrassing the west more and more in style. I have had NON Nigerians ask me upon watching many of our movies, why Nigerian women don't seem to like wearing their native clothes or natural hair? I've been asked why the names in the films are not native names but extreme forms of English names UNLESS it is plot line set in the village? I've been asked why some go as far as trying to sound British, American anything but Nigerian especially when they play "rich" people.
Whenever I go home, I am surprised at how many Nigerians at home want to sling Americanism at me when all I want to do is speak my native dialect, pidgen and in my Nigerian accent. And I've had people doubt that I live in New York because I don't go around speaking with an American accent which I can do without anyone detecting my Nigerian accent.
I'm sorry to say that it appears that SOME of us (before I'm accused of casting generalities about) are trying to assimilate into a culture that we don't even live in just so that we feel above the rest of the people; so we can hand out this perception that we are better of, better educated, better placed on the rungs of society. We are going too far. I've gone home and seen children with parents from the same tribal group NOT speak the language, speaking only English and I am afraid that in 50 years, Nigerian might be an English ONLY nation because so many people seem to lack pride in their culture, tradition and language. I asked my cousin what our your children's names, she starts with Ann, Jane and Keisha. I asked what are their native names, she says she doesn't remember because they don't use "those" names. She fall my hand no be small. She and her husband are from the same place, living there not in Lagos or Abuja or PH and the kids do not speak one word of their native dialect. What a blinking shame.

I am in total support of a person being entitled to their opinions what i hate is the constant "Nigerians" dribble that constantly comes up at every discussion. there is an African saying that goes "it is how you carry your egg that your neighbour will carry it for you"(paraphrased). We need to keep our criticisms about individuals to just that. Nigeria is too large a country to have some commenter out of their own complexes cast aspersions on ALL. I love weaves but i have tons of friends who don't. A good number of them Nigerian too. As for Beyounce and them not having hair faux pas', check mediatakeout from time to time. i have seen a picture of Beyounce with some lifted pasty lace wig(i will find the link and paste it here when i do). Rihanna gets away with those neither here nor there length red hairs bacause she is Riri. If Omotola did it.....hmmmm.i feel you on national pride, thats exactly what i'm on about. when we start to respect our nation, we will instil a sense of pride in our children and it will be as "funky" to speak a local dialect as it is to speak say Portuguese or Greek. Rebranding starts from the individual. let us rebrand our mindsets about who we are. I hope i've made sense.
