I'm traumatized!

The most horrible thing nearly happened to me and my family yesterday. Armed robbers invaded my area in Surulere early yesterday morning, around 2:30am. So many of them, they were able to break into some flats in my building but fortunately for us, help came before they could come into our own flat. Help, as in, my father started screaming 'Thief, thief, thief' and other neighbours joined, some started blowing whistles, some were screaming police see them there, see them there (no police was around o....lol) and fearing they would be caught, they abandoned their operation and ran away. Thankfully no single person was injured! The police arrived 15mins after the robbers left. Was quite surprised!

I've never experienced anything close to this before. I've not slept well, ate well, or blogged since the incident. Jeez, I'm traumatized, I need a psychologist...lol. It's time to move mehn, dammit! Where's the safest place to live in Lagos?

Like I said before, the robbery incidents in Lagos have increased over the last six months or so. You can be robbed anywhere; your home, in traffic, on the expressway, while walking on the streets, anywhere!...what's going on?

Anyway, will get back to blogging after seeing a psychologist. Psychologist as in, pop corn, movies, Ice cream and a little shopping...*wink*. Catch y'all soon. Kisses!

I'm glad you and your family are ok.

I can imagine how traumatized you must be. I'm still traumatized from a similar experience that happened like 8 years ago!

Im so sorry. I was robbed 2 weeks ago as well and I live in LEKKI PHASE 1. The experience was traumatic too.

Its only God that protects.

Thank God for delivering you all from those bastards. and don't worry, u will soon get over it. it's a normal thing to be in this state after such an experience. try to do things that makes u happy. and as for the safest place to live, it's God that protect us all.no matter where you live or work. just commit urself, ur family and loved ones in God's hands. the problem of armed robbery is nothing but unemployment. and the authorities (both at state and federal level) should do something about it, and stop wasting our money on law makers who are not doing anything but sit in the house legislating on how to steal from our treasury.may God deliver us and save Nigeria from the hands of the wicked... takia and God bless...marvelck

You mean since GEJ brought in Hafiz Ringin as the IG? What has been happening since then? Bombing? Unrest. Serial kidnapping. And assassination. Your president caused this when he altered the police commissioner in police, Marvel A. and brought in some Mallam called Shaban, a man who doesnt even know the geography of Milverton where his office is located.

Hey sorry about that linda, thank God you were not so affected..Maybe I should take you down to Ozone to cool off the stress or maybe we any of the beaches to get natural and fresh air....lolz

Glad to hear they didnt take from your family, kai your dad saved the day. SUPERMAN :). My heart goes out to those who were robbed. Even the mental anguish alone (whether robbed or not)...I hope you all can move from this :(

What are we going to do about insecurity and crime in Nigeria????It is the number 1 reason why disaporans dont want to come back home and properly invest in their country.I understand the latest is now 'kidnapping' for a ransome!!

Everyone says 'we need prayers' but prayers without works? I mean you noted that it is even increasing.

GEJ should place priority on this and do something fast!!!!

We used the whistles and banged casseroles to discourage the thieves, during the post election conflict, here in côte d'Ivoire! It is strange but it works! LOL!

It happened to my friend some years ago and she had to travel to London because she was traumatized and could not sleep well for several months.

When it was time for her house to be robbed the robbers decided that they were running out of time but seeing how they robbed her neighbours frightened the hell out of her.

Linda, your good deeds saved you. Continue to be nice and helpful no matter what. God will always save you in your hour of need. Amen!

***If I were you, I would see a Police Commissioner and try to get a licence and a gun. **If possible, keep an Inspector General of Police as a senior platonic friend. Are you laughing? *Never forget to pray...

Sorry linda . Thank God they didn't get to you, or harm anyone. The security situation in Lagos now is so not it! It's like that era when robbers attacked anytime and anywhere is being reincarnated. God protect us all!! BTW,I would also love to see 'your' psychologist o...*wink wink*

Thank God you are safe. It's sad that during the day you see Rapid Response Vehicles all over the place but they suddenly disappear into thin air when these thieves strike.

It's one of the reasons i don't want to move back to Nigeria. It's so scary!

Safest place to live in Lagos; IMO, any place where there's a high concentration of military/ex-military men and bank MDs; Ikeja GRA, Old Ikoyi, Parkview Estate and perhaps Banana Island. If you want to go further out, you can come to where my parents live in Co-operative Villa in Badore and it's very safe.

In all, it's only God that protects......

Linda its a pity; thank God that u did not experience the invasion in your own flat it would have been more traumatizing: Well your statistics is true: On the basis that thieves and robbery cases are the order of the day now as Cars are also snatched at Gun points arround the Airport/Beesam road anyhow (even at 8pm); I had to look for explanation. THE EXPLANATION: When i asked a close security agent, who was once a collegue, he told me that since the death of the Vice President of the OPC, (KOSIJA) died there have been a lot of security lapses have been noticed; it was acertain that the guy was chekmating the area boys and robbers from doing stuffs (like robbery and assault etc) cos they fear him and if any of them is involved as mentioned above, he will know and deal with he/she dicisively; he further explained that he was also generous and benevolent as he rembered his root also and that gave him alot of followers and finally he was the eye of the state government; His death as been questioned alot anyway but the truth still remains the State security agaents and police are not doing enough! ....STEVEN

Linda, Congratulations, the Police must have been sleeping at that time. How else could seven or more armed robbers mobilize through the streets at that time of the night and the police did not stop them. It is God that watches over us here. As to where you can stay that is safe, please rent a house next door to Asiwaju Tinubu's house in Ikoyi and you would be okay. As to what happens while on the roads of Lagos, no need to fear, just ask for some of your new neighbor's escort, he will oblige, I heard he is a nice man.

Linda this is not a joke oo; i can almost imagine how you feel - before we moved from where we were staying similar cases occurred, some neighbour had to cut down a tree because they discovered gunmen hid their ammunition in it. private security became the bet for the estate - gunshots became a regular thing, and even the patrol team were having fun taking shots in the sky in the middle of the night; sleep since then has been on edge.

Even now that we have moved, i wake up at the slightest sound... and just like you i have been asking, is there anywhere safe in Lagos for one to live anymore - its just sad

I am planning to move back home from USA in December and this is the kind of stuff that just makes me say fu*k it and stay in USA. There is crime here too but no one will come break into your house at 2.30am when you are sound asleep. What is going on in Lagos? Is there anywhere that is safe at all? What is the so called perfect governor Fashola doing about security? Am I just scared because I don't live there yet?

I witnessed a robbery for the first time of my life when i visited in 2008 and while in traffic and asleep, I woke up to guns blazing from everywhere and me and my mum had to run and duck for cover (This ain't a movie.

My mum was also attacked on Christmas day (SMH) last year and she was able to escape from 8 armed robbers which could have gotten ugly if I had been present as I usually visit for Xmas but missed last year.

Please Lagosians advice. I currently live in one of the best neighborhoods in USA with security that even "Shina Rambo" will run away from but I will be moving to Magodo in Lagos.

Linda,
I am happy for you and your family. We weren't so lucky back in the day. The robbers had enough time to make some eba and eat all of my mum's stew. It's a day I will never forget in my lifetime. It changed everything. Your sense of security, all the things you take for granted. We moved from the area in Akoka and moved to Gbagada but life was really never the same. A cop (1 police man) came after the robbers had been gone over 2 hours. The cop told my dad to write a statement. My dad just told the guy to go away.

I am glad I grew up in naija, but if there is one thing I love about where I am right now, it's the fact that my entire house has no single burglary proof bar. My kids would never know OPC and Olode runs. Did I mention my house does not even have a fence?!!!

An expatriate living in Banana Island was recently robbed on Third Mainland bridge, he was stripped naked and left alone on the bridge at night while the armed robbers made away with the jeep and his clothes. Abeg you guys should chill or take a trip to Banana Island. No salary earner no matter how much you earn can afford Banana Island. Btw, Linda, my sympathy, take care.

Pe le o!! Linda..glad you safe and well..brings back memories of my first armed robbery incident in that same Surulere..there we were think it was xmas or new years eve..blasting away fireworks as u do...we were just kids..innocent..suddenly this cars just blocked what looked like a rich man's benz in the front and back..mehn we scattered..they cut him with a machete ..for kids to witness that was sickening.. thankfully a neighbour was kind to let him in..that saved his life..he was eternally grateful..still remember it vividly after all this years..
Nigeria or Lagos Armed Robbers are one of the most wicked specimens on earth..their death should be slow and painful..they not only rob..but want to carry out the most sadistic acts on the victims..
My mother said nowadays they would carry out a raid on someone's home and start shouting that the person owes them money..
It's a shame that if u have nice things in 9ja somebody is thinking of killing one for it..at one point people didn't want to paint their homes in order not to bring attention to themselves.
Curious tho..ice cream and popcorn..funny how the simple things matter..when danger calls..

@ Annon 7:09 pm. Comparing crime rate in NYC and Nigeria, is like comparing handkerchif size to that of Babariga. Do you have the number of women being raped on a daily basis in Lagos by some serial men? I beg, Nigeria na jungle.

Ada daddy said...

So sorry to hear that. Thank God you are all ok.

Armed robbery experiences always stay on the mind many years after. Years ago, they robbed our neighbor right across from our house in Lagos, my mom and I watched it live, scarred stiff because some of them were by our gate on watch as the men went inside. The man's brother shouted "thief thief ole ole", and I heard as they pounded him to death. They butchered him, I was 12 and he screamed out loud, each shriek getting lower and lower, till it stopped. The police came after the experience.
We've been robbed before, but since none of us saw them, and the burglary proof prevented them from going upstairs thank God.
A relative was robbed last year in Lagos and they wanted to rape their 10 year old child!! They had her remove her clothes...Lord Thank you that one had the sense to tell the other that she's only a child. Thank God the older children were in hiding and were not found.
Its truly God who saves in Nigeria. Which is why folks need to depend more on Him, His word, Psalm 91 and the blood of Jesus. Cause staying near general or military folks cant prevent assassination/kidnapping attempts or robbery that occurs on the road or when you are visiting a friend's place!
