Is Third Mainland bridge collapsing?

Dilapidated Adekunle end of The Bridge, Lagos. Photo: Abiodun Omotoso

"I passed through the third mainland bridge yesterday when I was coming back home. And that was when someone was trying to find out from me - is it true that third mainland bridge is collapsing? Er at that time I was even driving through the third mainland bridge, so it is so crazy, so ridiculous that Nigerians are so unpatriotic, what they do is to create restiveness which don’t appear. And in the first instance, if anybody has information which is important like that there are criminals operating somewhere. We have several channels, security channels through which they can alert the police to get at those hoodlums. It is not to circulate such information to the whole world, if it actually happened, that is very very wrong…it never happened, it was a lie…the intention was just to create restiveness and fear. I don’t know what that person seeks to achieve. I think err it is most unfortunate." Lagos State Commissioner of Police Mr Marvel Akoyibo, speaking with Sahara reporters 4Th of Aug 2010

A text was recently sent out (by unknown person/people) asking motorists not to go through the bridge cos it's opened up.

God protect us all...

The 'cracks' are actually spaces left on purpose. Matter (in this case, concrete) expands with heat, so this is actually a preventive measure against the bridge collapsing. As per, if this space isn't provided, the concrete will actually crack. You can actually notice that the so called crack in the picture is in a straight line.

First and foremost Linda, you were going home not coming home. Geez.

Secondly what has patriotism got to do with talks about the crack on the bridge? FYI Patriotism is a love of and loyalty to one's country. People's lives are at risk here HELLO!!

Little wonder your book is not being sold.

MMSCHEEEWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, My God. I have to back linda on this one. That wasn't even necessary. LIke linda rightly reiterated, it wasn't her write-up. She just put it up on her blog for us readers to view and comment; whether necessary or not, and not for her to receive thinly veiled insults. Linda is not perfect but she has done so well for her age and residing in Nigeria. I mean, c'mon, how many young women of her age are consistent in their blogging not considering the die hard insults she receives, without resorting to closing down the blog. She is very much in tune with the society that she is based in; her awareness of people residing in the Lagos slums, children that have no one to help them, e.t.c, all of these were in her rested magazine publication. People advertise their products, brands, service, on her blog for free. Or is it her book, she is self-published. Why? Maybe it is her choice, for now. Who knows, she may have an agent, for later. Now, I think she is trying to get her footing into the publishing terrain, who knows what tomorrow may bring for her? Who knows. Linda, is not my sister (blood) or even friend (well, we have not discussed that, not just yet), but I admire her tenaciousness, her person, drive, determination, "can do attitude,", confidence, knowing who she is and where she is going...

anon, aug 6, 8:50am: I am not asking you to agree with me though on Linda, but I would want to let you know that the afore-mentioned is linda, take it or leave it.
