Ancient tree falls in Imo State, kills over 50 people

An ancient tree (believed by some to be a tree of the gods) fell on Thursday May 16th, killing over 50 people at Umudagu Mbieri, Mbaitoli in Imo State. The Osisi Ukwu Uko, which has been in existence for over 200 years, fell during heavy rainstorm around 8pm Thursday night, collapsing on buildings, people selling their wares and customers buying good in a market under the tree. Those who didn't die lost body parts and are being treated at the hospital.

People in the community had for many years called for the removal of the tree over safety concerns but the community elders refused to chop the tree down arguing that it was an  ancestral landmark.

Some people in the village are speculating that the gods occupying the tree were angry with the villages over something and decided to strike. Urm, OK! See more photos after the cut...

  9. 3 equally spaced wrought iron truss supports at the base of the tree would have averted this calamity. There is no way the gods would have removed those and dropped the tree on a market. Here's just another indicator of a comatose state apparatus. RIP

The comments here show that Nigerians are still ignorant mental slaves to the white man's religion a.k.a christianity. If you still believe in that crap in the 21st centaury, then you are just as ignorant as the people that believe the tree belongs to sacred gods.
Wake up! Have you noticed its the most religious countries that are stagnant while the western world is moving forward. Nigerians are more Christians than the Christians themselves. That religion was brought for the sole reason of enslaving and colonizing Africa.
You lot better wake up, denounce that religion, and take your country back.
And anyone that curses me, back to you a million times.

  47. Its a Pity this happened..My Wife is from Mbeiri and alot as been said abt the tree at my 1st visit to the village market... The mystery abt this happening is that last week a Mad Man who stayed under the tree as early warned them that something bad will happen and they should not come to market on Thursday... but they turned deaf ear... So sad so say that the tree was Possessed by Demons and Witches and Wizard use it for meetings... The falling of the tree Mark no SOUND when coming down, jst like an earthquake...
I PITY AlL THIS OUR OYIBO BORN that do not believe in mystic powers, Nobody to blame, we should all thank God for The Falling of this EVIL TREE, But the tragic is that THE EVIL TREE refuse to Go Down ALONE... MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN PEACE

  62. Firstly, the elders didn't refuse to cut the tree for fetish purposes, they refused to cut it cos it was a LANDMARK, like a tourist attraction for y'all who don't knw what that means, makes sense too, after all a good share of nigeria's money comes from tourism,
Now its sad indeed that people had to die, and I grieve their loss, but people talking about the elders should calm down and think it over, the tree prolly served the villagers, meetings, traditional marriages and such were prolly held under it, reason along that line

  64. The ancestral tree is located close to a market, sure is a popular spot since few villages in Mbieri must pass through there..........The tree roots has continued to decay for many years, and the slight wind blow may have contributed to the fall of the tree.... Chie, this is "AGBRA" at work....a deity per say.
