An ancient tree (believed by some to be a tree of the gods) fell on Thursday May 16th, killing over 50 people at Umudagu Mbieri,
Mbaitoli in Imo State. The
Osisi Ukwu Uko, which has been in existence for over 200 years, fell during heavy rainstorm around 8pm Thursday night, collapsing on buildings, people selling their wares and customers buying good in a market under the tree. Those who didn't die lost body parts and are being treated at the hospital.
People in the community had for many years called for the removal of the tree over safety concerns but the community elders refused to chop the tree down arguing that it was an ancestral landmark.
Some people in the village are speculating that the gods occupying the tree were angry with the villages over something and decided to strike. Urm, OK! See more photos after the cut...

Delete3 equally spaced wrought iron truss supports at the base of the tree would have averted this calamity. There is no way the gods would have removed those and dropped the tree on a market. Here's just another indicator of a comatose state apparatus. RIP
ReplyDeleteOYIBO
DeleteWhy did the tree not kill family members of the community elders, or the elders themselves... That would have been fair.. Stupid goats and their backward tradition..
Deletecomatose state u mean? U r ignorant 4 sayin dat!
DeleteWonders they say shall never end! That's the more reason all these deity worship shouldn't be mixed with civilisation, such a tree should have been removed long ago and those lives would have been saved. RIP to those that died.
ReplyDeleteOMG,please God have mercy on your children

ReplyDeleteNawa! What kinda storm brought down this big tree?? Ok! The elders who refused cutting the tree should sue the rains or the storm... Odikwa egwu! To think that in this 21st century when people are turning to God,some still believe inhe efficacy of an ancient tree
ReplyDeleteWhat a tragedy! Rest in peace people
ReplyDeleteobyazike.blogspot.co.uk
Or the tree was weak at the roots and it eventually caved under the pressure

ReplyDeleteCan u imagine 50 people gone bcos of one yeye deity, long hiss. May their soul rest in peace!empress
ReplyDeleteThe comments here show that Nigerians are still ignorant mental slaves to the white man's religion a.k.a christianity. If you still believe in that crap in the 21st centaury, then you are just as ignorant as the people that believe the tree belongs to sacred gods.
ReplyDeleteWake up! Have you noticed its the most religious countries that are stagnant while the western world is moving forward. Nigerians are more Christians than the Christians themselves. That religion was brought for the sole reason of enslaving and colonizing Africa.
You lot better wake up, denounce that religion, and take your country back.
And anyone that curses me, back to you a million times.
You're a witch d@s all
DeleteIts a Pity this happened..My Wife is from Mbeiri and alot as been said abt the tree at my 1st visit to the village market... The mystery abt this happening is that last week a Mad Man who stayed under the tree as early warned them that something bad will happen and they should not come to market on Thursday... but they turned deaf ear... So sad so say that the tree was Possessed by Demons and Witches and Wizard use it for meetings... The falling of the tree Mark no SOUND when coming down, jst like an earthquake...
ReplyDeleteI PITY AlL THIS OUR OYIBO BORN that do not believe in mystic powers, Nobody to blame, we should all thank God for The Falling of this EVIL TREE, But the tragic is that THE EVIL TREE refuse to Go Down ALONE... MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN PEACE

Ritual killings, kidnapping at its peak, baby-making factory, headquaters of prostitution in West Africa, deputy gov impeached, car rammed into the Governor's car & injured him, now evil tree kills 50 ppl kwa, Hia!. . . Always on the news for all the wrong reason. Imo state is quite a handful o.

ReplyDeletemay d souls of d dead RIP, Africans so much believe in ancestral spirits, and God's angry wit Africa, dt's why we are backward
ReplyDelete200 years; that is old enough to get uprooted under heavy rain and storm; their is nothing miraculous about this. Nigerians must stop attaching every event to miracles, gods, demons etc; please people wake up from your slumber!
ReplyDeleteEnuf of dis nonsense of blamin d so called gods 4 any manner of avoidable tragedy.we should wake up 4rm our mentally induced ignorance & apathy,d pple dat died if d true are d price we hav 2 pay 4 not wakin up 4rm dis our lethargy called CULTURE
ReplyDeleteFirstly, the elders didn't refuse to cut the tree for fetish purposes, they refused to cut it cos it was a LANDMARK, like a tourist attraction for y'all who don't knw what that means, makes sense too, after all a good share of nigeria's money comes from tourism,
ReplyDeleteNow its sad indeed that people had to die, and I grieve their loss, but people talking about the elders should calm down and think it over, the tree prolly served the villagers, meetings, traditional marriages and such were prolly held under it, reason along that line
jesus christ is the only redeemer, nonsense gods wey stay on top tree looool
ReplyDeleteMental slave. Better wake up from your slumber. Jesus was created and is just as fictional as these gods. And before you come at me with any BS, please do your research.
DeleteThe ancestral tree is located close to a market, sure is a popular spot since few villages in Mbieri must pass through there..........The tree roots has continued to decay for many years, and the slight wind blow may have contributed to the fall of the tree.... Chie, this is "AGBRA" at work....a deity per say.
ReplyDeleteHow can a giant tree remove itself from τ̣̣ђё root. Another tragic in Imo, this one happened right close to ♏Ɣ village. 1ders shall never end.
ReplyDeleteSometime ago, some pple who tried cutting down τ̣̣ђё branches of this same tree all died, that was another reason it was decided to be left alone. No one is to be blamed please LIB readers.
ReplyDeleteGod use that to proof to them that he is the only almighty God no other not their stupid god
ReplyDelete.
@ Alicia u have already cursed ur self by saying we should not blieve in God, the white men country u are say, are they corrupt the way our leader corrupts?, they love themself care for their citizen, they are not self centered, they planned 4 the next generation.was it the white man told them not to cut the tree? are u going to tell me if they have such trees where they knew dat it can affect life and properties and they would'nt cut it? . So u are not intelegent at all
ReplyDeletePlease learn to read and write, thank you.
DeleteYou have injured my eyes with your bad English
ReplyDeleteMay der souls rest in peace,Amen!
ReplyDeleteAnon May 19, 2013 at 10:19 AM; Imo State as the HQ of prostitution in West Africa? If you don't have the figures to back up your ignorant view shut the fuck up. I will even put Benin and Lagos before Imo State. Anuofia.
ReplyDeleteObey God,pray, worship no.everything is about life.what?hw come the village fathers or tree worshipers didnt see it was going to fall. anyway may their soul rest in peace. This is to tell us that God is powerful and can command anything we think we have powers on.

ReplyDeleteAfrica is indeed a Dark Continent! Still wallowing in ignorance, hence causing its people undue pain and death. It is just a tree for crying out loud! Cut it down and nothing will happen. People should wake up and let light come into Africa. Na wao. Hope the so called were caught in this destruction.
ReplyDeleteSo tragic & unfortunate. May their souls rest in peace ..
ReplyDeleteDis is Act of God....nothing more.
