Charleston, South Carolina shot a fleeing unarmed black man five
times in the back then handcuffed his lifeless body after he crumpled on
the ground was captured on camera and it's shocking. It was captured by a bystander who has been hailed as a hero. He's now in hiding.

Keith Summey, the mayor of North Charleston, termed the killing a 'bad decision' at a press conference announcing the charges.
"When you’re wrong, you’re wrong. When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.'
On Monday, the police officer's lawyer issued a statement putting across Slager's version of events. He said the officer 'felt threatened and reached for his department-issued firearm and fired his weapon. "Officer Slager believes he followed all the proper procedures and policies of the North Charleston Police Department'.
But after seeing the shooting tape yesterday, the lawyer said he was no longer representing Slager
Under South Carolina law, Slager could be eligible for the death penalty if convicted of murder.
A
lawyer for the family said that the footage shows Slager
'casually' taking Scott's life, and acting as if there would be no
repercussions.
Attorney
L. Chris Stewart said: 'This was a cop who felt like he could get away
with just shooting anybody that many times in the back... He just
casually shot a man that many times in the back. At the moment he turned and ran and was not a threat to anybody else that officer was completely unjustified.'
Stewart said the family would also pursue civil charges against Slager.

He also said that without the video, and the 'hero' who recorded it, there would have been no murder charges.
He told TV crews: 'What happened today doesn't happen all the time - what if there was no video?'
'What if there was no witness - or hero - to come forward?
'The
initial reports stated something totally different - the officer said
Mr Scott attacked him and tried to use his Taser on him. But somebody
was watching.'
Scott's brother, Anthony, spoke after his brother's death. He said Walter had a fiancée, two siblings and four children.

Its an unfortunate incidence. He panicked which he was not suppose to as a trained officer. More over the threat was already fleeing. Not easy being an officer oh. Few seconds to make right decisions
ReplyDeleteIf you download the video and watch it slowly, at the beginning (around 00:17 -00:20) you could see that there was a struggle between the two and a pistol fell on the floor just as the black guy was about to flee. The officer panicked and quickly pointed his gun and fired. But at this time a single shot on the leg was enough as there is no longer any threat since he is unarmed and running a way.
The officer found out he had goofed quickly went to pick the gun from it fell at the beginning to drop near body, unfortunate for him the was a camera. If not for the video, they might have covered it up to say the guy was armed while running away and thus a threat to the society.

ReplyDeleteI have noticed that the video of most of the victims of police killing have always one way or the other tried to resist arrests. My question is why resist arrest if you know you have committed an offence again the law. Look at this present case now. Just because of a broken tail light, the victim is gone. All he could have gotten for the offence would have been a fine or 'patapata' let's say the car was stolen, no be to go court? and if he has a good lawyer, he ends up paying a fine or go 'small jail term'. 2nd case. the victim that was wrestled to the ground by more than 5 policemen. Why would I struggle against against 5 law enforcement officers (even 2) and expect not to be subdued. I be man of steel? One should be very careful with most of these policemen-be they in Nigeria, America or where ever. Most of them are power drunk and egoistic. A subtle challenge by civilians on their ego triggers unprecedented and shocking reaction.
A case in Nigeria some years back involved a friend of mine who was travelling from lagos to one of the south-south states to attend a friend's wedding. It happened that due to traffic at Ore, he ended up arriving the state late in the night. At one of the police check points on the road leading into the state, he was commanded (not politely asked o)to drop 'something' even after they found out all his vehicle 'particulars' were complete. When my friend objected (on the annoyance that they should have asked for 'egunje' instead of wasting his time all the while) one of the policement with a gun who had been quite all the time they others were arguing with my friend simply walked up to him and silently spoke into my friend's ear. You will not believe what the policeman told him. " Oga you just they argue like say you get choice for here. Look this road well! well! You see as e quite? You know say if I shoot and kill you now say you be robber, nothing go happen? Shocking right? My friend said he almost soiled his 'boxers'. The reality is that what the policeman said was true. innocent lives have been taken by policemen and nothing had happened. quite a number of Policemen have used innocent lives to gain promotion. Please my people, when you are challenged by overzealous law-enforcement officers, please be wise not to give them the room to unleash the beast in them. There are other ways of fighting and getting justice served some other time if you must pursue the case.
People should learn to respect other people's opinion. Everyone is entitled to one. Calling out Onyx was not right at all. No one called you out for the comments you posted. You can never know if you will meet this person tomorrow and he or she will be the person that needs to say the word that will help you. People should not abuse the privileges they have on the internet by using it to insult other people. Everyone should respect each other on this forum. My Opinion.
