Tibetan protester sets himself on fire (Graphic Photos)

27year old Tibetan protester, Jamphel Yeshi, today set himself on fire and sprinted for 50m through New Delhi, in a demonstration during the Chinese president's visit to India.

Yeshi, who was on fire for about two minutes before he collapsed, sustained burns on 98 per cent of his body. Other protesters doused him in water and took him to the hospital where he's in critical condition.

Yeshi and other Tibetans protesters (who now live in India) were demonstrating against China's rule over Tibet and the Chinese President's arrival in India later this week for a summit meeting.

  3. Stupid fool, setting your self on fire will cause the chinese president any pain? Like he cares? What happened to peaceful protests? Some people will never learn! And for the people watching him, you needed to wait for him to collapse before stoping the fire?? Stupid fools #2

  6. TERRIBLE! Haven't they realize that "when there is Life there is hope... "
No matter the situation/protest, there are better ways you can show or express your grievances. Why Burn in Hell before getting there?
If you commit suicide its Hell straight You don't own your life (God owns it) so you shouldn't take it.

  10. Set himself on fire because he wanna protest...If he died in d cause and the issue get resolved then wat wud be his gain? He must be high on drug to do that. No one in his right frame of mind wud think setting himself/herself ablaze can resolve any burning issue. Am happy for him bcos he's still alive sha. I pray he survived it

  11. That was quite extreme, Tibetians are passionate about their Country. Come to think of it, China should recognise the Sourvreignity of Tibet, considering the Peaceful and non-violent approach of the Tibetian spiritual leader, Dila lama.

@ jesscci you got it head on. As much as I'll never endorse this type of protestation as it results in the loss of life I dear venture to commend Yeshi. It all seems stupid and fruitless but the fact is that he has shown his commitment to the emancipation of his beloved Tibet. His death in the course of achieving this is rather immaterial for it's likely to awaken docile minds riddled by apathy to the course of freedom. NLC and TUC leaders for naija fit try this na, abi? Afterall na protest them dey protest(lol). If dat young man wey dey head TUC read this eh, d man fit curse me eh. But then, we ought all to pause and consider Yeshi's attempt at matyrdom, who knows, it may just be what is needed to bring our rulers(definitely not leaders) to their knees(dreamland, abi?). You never can tell.

  20. Everybody is shouting 'Madness'..' Foolish man' et al...

This is the problem with Nigerians. They love life so much.Nobody, I repeat, nobody is ready to die for any cause. That's why, after shouting and shouting for one week over an issue like corruption, everybody goes home and start living with it.Cowards. When you get to a stage where you believe in a cause, you will be amazed at how much that singular act will change the course of history.Yes, you may not be alive to witness it, but you are the door from which the light comes in.
Self immolation right from the days of old,has changed the course of a nation's history.
In Naija, everybody is shouting revolution,revolution..who get the liver to start am?Let one dude walk to National Assembly and shoot a senator..same people shouting revolution will turn around to blame him for going there....
    Nigerians....Cowards and lilly livered crooks.

    1. Good lord, thank you for that. Nigerians have not a single clue about fighting or dying for a cause which is why we are in the situation we are in today. I would not set myself on fire but I truly admire this young mans dedication to the cause. He is not thinking about his pain and burns but instead concerned about the future of Tibet.

  24. People risk their lives to fight for freedom and rights.

Not saying, every Nigerian should set themselves on fire, but we are bunch of cowards who are only good for opening our big mouths. If we can do half of what people in other countries do to fight against their corrupt government, Nigeria will be a better country.

  39. I know this blog is to the Nigerian audience and that is why we could see comments saying the Tibetan is mad, stupid, e.t.c. A Tunisian did the same thing, it caused the Arab spring and as a result many Arab countries had since gained their freedom from half-a-century reigned brutal dictators. I am a christian (a religion of faith on earth and hope for a peaceful life after earth), and I seriously understand the eternal effect of suicide as a result of what I'm made to learn from my religion. However, to the Tibetans, perhaps their religion is indifferent, thereby putting their earthly suffering as priority to an unknown or rather uncertain life after earth. You need to be in their shoes to know. May God have mercy on them.

  46. Stupidity in Humanity. I don't think there are words to describe this. That guy has no reason to exist

    ReplyDelete
  47. YOU PEOPLE SEE IT AS MADNESS AND IT SEEMS SO THOUGH, BUT THIS IS REAL PROTEST. THE GUY DIED FOR A CAUSE AND LETS WAIT AND SEE THE AFTERMATH IN WEEKS TO COME. YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN SO SOON ABOUT WHAT LED TO THE PROTESTS IN TUNISIA AND EGYPT THAT ENDED THE REGIMES IN POWER IN THOSE COUNTRIES. NIGERIANS ARE TOO COMFORTABLE. WE THINK SUFFERING AND SMILING IS THE BEST WAY OF LIFE. THAT IS WHY OUR LEADERS WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE US FOR A RIDE. IF YOU KNOW THE LEVEL OF DAMAGE OUR POLITICIANS HAVE DONE TO THIS COUNTRY, YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME THAT VIOLENT PROTEST (TAKING ON POLITICIANS AND THEIR FAMILIES) IS THE ONLY WAY OUT. THE DAY BOKO HARAM TURNS THEIR ANGER ON CORRUPT POLITICIANS AND THEIR FAMILIES, I WILL JOIN THEM.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Boko haram should take a cue from this.....they should start setting themselves on fire to show they are protesting not kill other innocent people

  56. I wonder what sort of people make comments on this LIB,typical Nigerians who will rather sit down and watch others make them suffer. The arab revolution that swept egypt, libya, etc started from a simple fruit seller who set himself ablaze with fire to protest the hardship his people where going through, today he is a hero in the arab world. This guy has a genuine reason to protest and he has chosen the extreme way of doing it which has caught international attention, check your todays papers. Wether you agree with his method or not, the idea is that he has spoken for his people, he will rather die than have china continue to occupy his land. How are you better than him.

  62. You think this dude is crazy, right? I see someone that is so PASSIONATE about his country and beliefs.

Do you know what it took him to make such a decision? He's no coward, that's for sure. You pple need to look up the history of Tibet and China (like you'd give a damn anyways). Most of you might not even know your roots and still wldnt care so long as life is sweet.

This is not the first Tibetan to set him/herself on fire and he sure won't be the last.

I can't set myself on fire but I respect this guy DIE!!!. Talk about dying for something you believe in, what life all about anyways...
