Ibinabo Fiberesima's son writes emotional open letter, asks Nigerians to pray for his mum

Sean Coughlan is the first son of actress and AGN president, Ibinabo Fiberesima, who is facing 5 years in prison after losing an appeal to overturn her 5 year jail sentence by a High Court over an accident that happened 11 years ago that took a man's life. Ibinabo was charged with dangerous and reckless driving. Her son is now asking Nigerians to pray for his mum in an open letter he released yesterday. Read after the cut...

People of Nigeria, This is Sean, first and proud son of Ibinabo Fiberesima, I write on here today to plead with all Nigerians to pray for my mother. She is going through the toughest of times right now, and so are we, her family. I’ve been reading heartbreaking comments on her matter that ‘she thinks she’s above the law’, ‘she doesn’t feel sorry for the family of the deceased’, ‘she was drunk and deserves this punishment’, let me get a few things straight with you now.

My mother is the most humble woman I know, I was not aware she was a celebrity until I was about 14 and that’s only because my uncle told me, she does not see herself or act as if she is above any other person. She is a proud Nigerian who loves her country and its people.

Secondly, she has been carrying heartbreak around with her for the past 11 years after the accident. She understands the pain for the deceased family and is very hurt about what happened herself. She has tried her utter most to console with the Family, so don’t ever think she does not care.

Thirdly she was not drunk, the charges are reckless and dangerous driving, first of all I refuse to believe my mother was driving recklessly or dangerous, as I’ve been in a car with her countless times and nothing has happened.

On this occasion it was unfortunate, she was unlucky, her car flipped over which happens to a number of cars and another car smashed into her. She was in a comma for days, she could have easily lost her life, but thankfully, by Gods strength only she survived.

She did not set out that day trying to kill someone or herself. Right now my mother is broken, and needs the prayer and support of all Nigerians, so please put all your conspiracies about this matter aside, I know it’s between her and God now.

Join us, myself, Craig her son who is 14, Malcolm and Brian her other sons and her beautiful Daughter Zino who is just 8, and the rest of her family, to pray for my Mother. Let God decide what is just and what is not. Whatever your religion, join us and Pray for my mother as well as the family of the deceased. We can all get through this but not without God.

Thank you for reading, may God bless you all.”

Always put yourself in people's shoes before judging the person. I pray that what has hapoened to Ibinabo will happen to you too and may you never receive forgiveness from the government, court or family of the deseased in Jesus Name. Amen!

  15. From the letter, I discovered that cars in naija are gymnasts are flip over every once in a while. She cares for the family of the late doctor so we shouldn't dare judge her negatively. And worst of all, the writer has no brothers just other sons of his mother. I believe when we want to pen down open letters, let's try to read them to ourselves at least 5 times before sending in order not to send mixed messages. Cheers. PS I wish the best for madam Ibinabo.

  19. Sean as a person who knew your mom right from the time of her night club Pyramid back in the day I can affirm that you mom is an avid and reckless drinker and I doubt she has changed much over the years. What I advise you to do is to pray for the family of the deceased doctor who she abruptly cut his life short. They have been living without a father and deprived of all the care and love he would have given them. Driving under the influence (DUI) is treated with severity in saner climes but here we think it is normal. If the right checks were put in place your mom ought to have been serving time a long time ago. I advise you pray for your mom to change whilst she serves her time in prison while you her kids use that as lesson and a reference point in your lives as you grow older.

  28. Being sorry for whatever wrong you have done means u are willing to accept the punishment for that wrong. I think Dr. Giwa would have been very happy to spend five years in jailed instead of dying 11years ago. What happens to people who depended on the doctor? the parents and sibling who watched their son/brother snatched from them. A country where everything goes, no wonder we see the judgement as abnormal. This is justice to me and a fully support it. oscar pistorius made SA proud in many ways, but today he is facing the full weight of his action.

  34. Eya. Quite emotional. Well, I expect another emotional letter from maybe the victim's wife or son too. But wait o, he didn't call them his brothers, he referred to them as 'her sons and daughter' meaning they have separate fathers kenan? But no matter how bad we might feel for her, the law is law. there are people have might have committed less serious crimes and were made to face worse.

  35. Sentencing her to 5yrs cannot & will never bring the man back. People should learn how to forgive each other and let go. 11yrs ago is not 11days ago. God asked us to forgive 70x7 a day.may d lord see her thru IJN.

    2. My brother had an accident and hit a 4 year old boy with his car. The little boy did not die immediately but later died in the hospital. My family paid the hospital bills before he died and also paid for his burial. We kept visiting the family of the deseased from time to time. We even paid the school fees of the deseased brother and later sponsored him abroad because he wanted to travel out after school. He stayed with our relative abroad for sometime and later moved to his own house. He is doing well now and he now has his papers to live abroad as a citizen. His parents are nice humble christians. Each time we visited them, they always told us that God gives and God takes and they told my brother to forgive himself and that he should stop feeling guilty. We paid bills for the parents and sometimes house rent. This was the least we could do as we cannot bring the little boy back to life. Only God can. My family and the deseased family are now very close. The son we sponsored abroad calls us almost everyday and he is also close to our relatives abroad. This is how things should be. The bible says forgive one another. Leave revenge to God. Pray that you never mistakenly do something ugly to a wicked and heartless family. We keep thanking God everyday for this humble christian family. Lastma, road safety and policemen were all at the scene when my brother had the accident but they never charged the case to court. So why are they so harsh on this case? Is it because a celebrity is involved?

  65. Truth must be told, your emotional plea is one-sided; you never gave any thought to the family of the dead. While it may be true that your mum is not a careless driver, it is difficult to believe that without excessive speeding, any car can skip to the opposing side of the road.

You were then very young to know what being a celebrity did to many Nigerian actors/actresses, your mother inclusive. The picture is a bit different today, because of the influx of many celebrities from the realm of music.

One factor that we seem to be forgetting is that but for good governance in Lagos state, your mum would have been out of the woods teh-teh! The useless judge in the court of first hearing had set her free with an option of N100,000 fine. What was N100,000 to a celebrity then! But for the government then who demanded for justice on behalf of the bereaved family, your mother will not be a prisoner today.

My brother, I sympathize with your siblings and you, but I empathize with the other family that lost their bread-winner. Please allow your mum spend the 5years in prison, if only to atone for her crime.

D car wasn't even hers.. and wen d judge ruled on her favor granting her fine of 100k she celebrated to d scorn of the deceased family forgetting that there is a living God.. living her life as if nothing happened.. now its her turn to face d pains of what d family felt and u crying wolf.. well.. I don't pray she goes to jail.. God will hep her

  80. Why is a drunk driver who killed still roaming scott free and given chance after chance to remain out of jail? Court decisions say she goes to jail. Rather, she goes home and walks red carpets in the public eye. Why?

    ReplyDelete

    1. She walks the red carpet is that the only thing that is paining you?oya sorry come and walk the red carpet too like a peacock if that will make you happy...smh

  82. Pray for your mum because she is who ? She recklessly drove and in the process a breadwinner of a family died, they were able to divert justice and reduced the poor mans life to 100k, we were made to understand through comments that she and her trolls were openly rejoicing when the judgement was given and thereafter she was carrying on as if she is above the law. Upto last week she was partying hard knowing fully well that she was going to court the following week. Somebody commented that the judgement was ethnically bised , the comment is very unfortunate and funny. What did the poor Doctors wife and Family say the first time their dead bread winners life was reduced to 100k which I'm sure she immediately brought out of her bag to pay. What we are saying is that as a sign of pain, restitution, empathy, remorse she should have lived a very private and low key life till this cup passes her. Na lie Today she is leading AGN members e.g Patience Ozuokwo, Mercy Johnson and co to Aso Rock for GEJ for presido and dollars splashed as gift, Elaborate Wedding, AMVA awards, wearing same outfit with her mini me and splashing online etc and you just don't know if the doctors wife and family has been able to get over the whole trauma and been able to move on .i've lost loved ones and I know how painful it is . It's a pain only God can take away with time. Treat human life with respect, empathy and dignity.

  83. Your mom is as guilty as charged!! Sorry but she deserved any punishment given to her...we all MUST pay for our sins! All d best to her though.

  85. Five years jail can't be compared to the loss of life. The court is a court of justice. Justice must be done to a litigant who seek it. Your mom goes to jail but u can still see her there but the family of the deceased can't see their dad again. Which is more painful. Be grateful is five years jail term and not death sentence.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Sorry dear BT d oda family shud be pity more.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Am begging you in d name of God to forgive her (d family of deceased doctor) pls forgive her because after five years d doctor will see no more and is only forgiveness can heal d vacuum death has created in your heart.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sorry, but laws are there to ensure everyone is granted an equal opportunity to live and earn. Your mom's recklessness denied another man those rights. And also exposed his family to untold pain and suffering without their father, husband and breadwinner.

She has to go to jail. That's the only way to maintain a sane and fair society.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Did you say Maintain a fair and sane society?our children have gone mad, nothing like fair and sane in Nigeria ...ibinabo going to jail won't change anything....

  92. Even if fiberesima spend the hole of her life in jail it will not still bring back the life of the doctor, as Christians we should learn to forgive. Ibinabo should be forgiven by the doctors family and Nigerian at large. I advice ur mum to go to the doctors family with men of God and ask for forgiveness and closure of the case before the court date. May the Lord be with her in this time of pain. Amen

    2. Sorry Ebere, the Nigerian constitution is not a Christian. There must be law and order to maintain sanity in any community. There must be consequences for actions and inactions . including recklessness. We will pray for her that she has strength to complete her 5 years term.

  93. I pray thst God almighty will set your free.. He is the judge of all judges and i challenge God almighty with your mothercase to judge in her favour and show his supremacy.. May the doctors soul rest in peace..what happened was the will of God and God knows of it.. For whomsoever God has set free is free indeed and God has set your mum free we are just waiting for the physical manifestation trust me.

In as much as it is painful, it may be the will of God or maybe power of his father's village have already used remote control to kill him in the spiritual a night before the accident but they needed somebody to complete it physically and innocent Ibinabo played into their hands. The family members of the deseased should go and check what happened to him spiritually. It is not ordinary. Na juju them take kill am. Dont blame Ibinabo. She is just a victim of circumstance.

  106. So by the logic here, no criminals, which is what she is for driving drunk and killing a man, owe a debt to society because what's done is done. Simply forgive and forget because retribution doesn't undo the crime. I wonder if the same would be said had she been without fame and fortune.

  114. Lil' man lemme teach you some life lessons...a good apology starts with 3 things; I was wrong, it was my fault & how do I make it right? Your dear mother hasn't shown those at least according to the deceased's family. Secondly, what you believe about your mother is irrelevant as the courts have found her guilty & until her verdict can be overturned, that's right...your opinion would remain wishes. I don't know what offers she made to the family but it would be a good kickstart to show remorse & seek reconciliation. Nobody is interested in antagonising your mother but don't add salt to the injury of the family of the deceased coz they're also members of the public & would get to read your subtle plea for help and ARROGANCE about who & what your mother is.
