Benin women protest over Oshiomhole’s comments against Igbinedion

Due to the recent fight between the Edo State governor,Adams Oshiomhole, and the Esama of Benin Kingdom Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, members of the Concerned Edo Women, yesterday, took to the streets of Benin to protest the governor’s attack on the Igbinedion family.

Some of the women who were topless and dressed in red attires protested over what they described as the “disrespectful utterances by the governor on the Bini chief.

They said the insults were unnecessary adding that they didn't appreciate the state governor's show of disrepect  stating that it offended the Bini nation, 'who are very respectful people'.

Some of the women carried placards with inscription such as “Oshiomhole, you are always insulting your elders”, “Go and beg for forgiveness,” “Nemesis will catch up with you,” among others at the city centre.

The protesting women in their hundreds, took the peaceful protest to the Kings Square and other major streets in the state capital, they also visited the Chief Priest of the Emotan Statue. The priest said said the protest was a welcomed one as nobody, regardless of his position in the state should insult Bini chiefs and elders.
Thewomen said:
“We are women and as mothers, sisters and aunts to Chief Igbinedion, we say no to any form of disrespect to his person. We cannot see evil in the land and support it. We are against the action of the governor particularly on Chief Igbinedion and his household. We want the governor to apologize to the Esama. All we are asking the governor is to stop insulting elders from Benin Kingdom, so that we do not completely go naked and place curses on him,” they said in Bini dialect.

  3. This protest is quite an empty one sha.So of all the problems bedeviling the state, its this political rivalry between the two men that's disturbing em? What about issues of insecurity, rape, unemployment, kifnapping, lack of basic amenities? I believe these are very important issues that mothers can actually voice out their concerns not done political brouhaha that evidently looks like they've been hired.Na wa oh

  12. It's because annoy things like this that has deprived Edo state from developing... how can they be protecting a family that have looted the state funds for years. Benin Kingdom should actually be Nigeria's most successful state, but it is drowning in unemployment and underdevelopment owing to their refusal to embrass positive ideas and ecomonical opportunities that may challenge their old ways.

  13. Elders? Is Oshiomole himself a small boy? So if he cannot ask questions on behalf of his people, who can ask? No-one? Sorry, those days are gone. It would have been better if all the protestors had bared their breasts. Only one mama (the real elder) bared, while the rest (politicians) wore the clothes and came to shout and dance only. Look o, please don't use our culture to threaten us, to hold us back from demanding more from our leaders. Respect yourselves as elders, so that the youths can respect you. And next time, all should bare their breasts if they are serious, instead of pushing that poor mama forward.

  16. Blind nation!!! If there governor apologizes, does it make what he said a lie? Will it delete the words from history? People are developing there countries, we are here fighting ourselves. Are we going forward or backwards? In what year are we going to be called a developed country? Oh! Nigeria... May God help us to realize ourselves on time.

  20. This issue is been blown out of proportion. The governor made some allegations against chief Igbinedion and repeatedly mentioned his name while addressing some youths. So, is this the 'insults' that made these women to come out like this? Well, my opinion is that they were sponsored. I am waiting to see the high-ranking Bini chief come out to condemn the governor just like they did in the case of one chief Arisco, otherwise I believe the governor has the palace's support.

  22. So they can't even speak English, how did they manage to write on placards? How did they understand the english oshiomhole spoke when insulting igbinedion? I am from bini and i ll advise u Linda to allow this issue sleep or else u ll take part in the curse placed on igbinedion, these women and their household. I know they paid u, so u had to rephrase ur report and post it again. Does igbinedion has respect for anyone? Useless and jobless women. I don't ve anyone even in my extended family that can take part in this kind of useless protest.

This is the main problem with Bini people, tradition will nor allow them see road, I mean it's not exactly news that Lucky Igbenedion and his father almost finished Edo state, now see somebody dat can at least stand up to him, bini women want to pull cloth, it's just irritating 'our Esama' wtf...so if u want to steal in Benin city the best route now is to become a chief o

  41. This is the problem with black man, Nigerians most especially. A governor is fighting those that plunderd the treasury of their people and they are here protesting blindly. They could even be rented protesters commonly seen here in Nigeria. Chief Igbinedion is not above the laws of the federal republic of Nigeria. Oshiomole should not be cowed into dropping any case with substantial evidence of looting irrespective of whose involved. The laws of Nigeria superceed the laws of the Bini kindom except it has ceased being part of Nigeria.QED.

  62. I wonder how much they've been paid.....
I was schooling in UNIBEN during Igbinedion's tenour as state governor; my most vivid memory of his rule was Pensioneers' protesting the withholding of their allowance and his father (the Esama) telling them to look to their own children.
Bini people have obviously forgotten this family's antecedent.
