Journalist claims foreign journalists are being blocked from getting visas to cover elections in Nigeria

Geoffrey York is an Africa correspondent for The Globe and Mail, based in Johannesburg, South Africa and he's on Twitter claiming foreign journalists are being blocked form getting visas to cover elections in Nigeria. If this is true, why so? More tweets after the cut...

  24. Nigeria should be extremely careful whom they let in under the guise of who is a journalists. A lot of these so called journalists are coming in to do things have nothing to do with the election. Some of them will come simply to rubbish Nigeria they do not to be given a VISA it is not a right to visit Nigeria, some are here simply to sleep with Prostitutes and get drunk, It is not a right they should submit their names for security clearance if they do not pass they should be denied, it is not every Nigerian that goes to the embassy that gets VISA,the color of your skin does not give you any special privileges to be running around Nigeria.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mr York, with all due respect to your profession, Nigeria reserves the right to allow or dissallow anybody from visiting its country. The implication of this article is to insult the Nigerian govt and that is unacceptable. When Nigerians plan to visit other countries we subject ourselves to due process. I don't see why you think you deserve and any special treatment. We already have security issues to deal with so I don't think its wise to give visas to every Tom, Dickson and Harry. I'm sure you can understand the safety concerns.

  38. what's the need when the international community has turned their back on us when we needed them most in aiding fight against terrorism in Nigeria.. my guess is a lot of them wanna come so they take advantage of political tension in the country ..by probably reporting one-sided news as regards to the political party they're getting paychecks from..thereby aggravating the tension worldwide..we should tryna at least have belief in our security agencies for once..and not assume this is the fg's doing as usual for purpose of gaining unfair advantage.

  48. Because they go back and report lies!!! They claim they are coming to report election, yet, when they get to Nigeria, all they want is to report negative information about the country and make us look bad. Let them stay in their country and mind their own business. Imagine titling his tweets ' latest Nigerian scandal.' like seriously? We already know what he is going there for. These are the people that do not want us to suceed.
