Geoffrey York is an Africa correspondent for The Globe and Mail, based in Johannesburg, South Africa and he's on Twitter claiming foreign journalists are being blocked form getting visas to cover elections in Nigeria. If this is true, why so? More tweets after the cut...

Issuing of Visa is at the desecration of the visa officer. If you are not obliged with one, never take it personal. Many nations have rejected Nigerians from entering their nations at one time or the other.
ReplyDeleteNot without reason, transparency means the procedure must be open challenge.
DeleteYes you people should stay dere. We no wat wahala

Still on political matters.
ReplyDelete@Sophia Stephen
Nigeria should be extremely careful whom they let in under the guise of who is a journalists. A lot of these so called journalists are coming in to do things have nothing to do with the election. Some of them will come simply to rubbish Nigeria they do not to be given a VISA it is not a right to visit Nigeria, some are here simply to sleep with Prostitutes and get drunk, It is not a right they should submit their names for security clearance if they do not pass they should be denied, it is not every Nigerian that goes to the embassy that gets VISA,the color of your skin does not give you any special privileges to be running around Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteWhy won't they be blocked, we saying our country is already bad αи∂ corrupt...αи∂ they wanna come αи∂ expose /wash us in their countries so that by way, we †Ñ’ξ innocent citizens will now remain bad ppl in their sight.. Abeg they should better be blocked well oooo ...lol
ReplyDeleteNigeria govt ehhhh
ReplyDeleteGood question Linda, smh at this GEJ'S administration. Is he planning on rigging the election? God help our country.GEJ pack ur load and go, later you will tell us u are all for democracy, yet you prevent int'l journalists for reporting about the election, your time in Aso rock is over, FeBuhari14 all the way.
ReplyDeleteThis Nigga should stop ranting.. Same way we're being given Visas when we have important conferences and events to attend in ur country?

ReplyDeleteMumu biased journalist not needed in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteDey don't want fiful 2 see the how pdp will rig d election
ReplyDeleteCovering their nyash..
ReplyDeleteThe reason is obvious. The elections will not be free or anywhere near fair.
ReplyDeleteMr York, with all due respect to your profession, Nigeria reserves the right to allow or dissallow anybody from visiting its country. The implication of this article is to insult the Nigerian govt and that is unacceptable. When Nigerians plan to visit other countries we subject ourselves to due process. I don't see why you think you deserve and any special treatment. We already have security issues to deal with so I don't think its wise to give visas to every Tom, Dickson and Harry. I'm sure you can understand the safety concerns.
ReplyDeleteJonathan and PDP are scared stiff...
ReplyDeleteWhat did u expect #onlyinnigeria
ReplyDeletewhat's the need when the international community has turned their back on us when we needed them most in aiding fight against terrorism in Nigeria.. my guess is a lot of them wanna come so they take advantage of political tension in the country ..by probably reporting one-sided news as regards to the political party they're getting paychecks from..thereby aggravating the tension worldwide..we should tryna at least have belief in our security agencies for once..and not assume this is the fg's doing as usual for purpose of gaining unfair advantage.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe dat abeg, when has getting a visa to enter naija bcom an issue. People are capitalizing on dis election too much. Linda take note!

ReplyDeleteWe don't want them.
Do their embassies issue our citizens visas?
Make dis people no play wayo ooo...cos dem ones won't take bribe.
ReplyDeleteSo much about free and fair. They want to steal ballot boxes in the cities as stealing in inaccessible places alone can't deliver them this Time. #change
ReplyDeleteBecause they go back and report lies!!! They claim they are coming to report election, yet, when they get to Nigeria, all they want is to report negative information about the country and make us look bad. Let them stay in their country and mind their own business. Imagine titling his tweets ' latest Nigerian scandal.' like seriously? We already know what he is going there for. These are the people that do not want us to suceed.
ReplyDelete"Nigeria allowed many foreign journos to cover "Bring Back Our Girls" last year; yet now it's blocking at least 40 from covering election" #Bad Mouth. Lol.
ReplyDeleteBcos dey don't want foreigners to c deir fuck up
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't know what he's talking about...maybe his traveling documents are not complete..he should stop painting us bad..mtchewwww
ReplyDeleteMight be true. Nigeria ways are always corrupt. We know the election is just camouflage.
ReplyDeleteShalom in Nigeria, Amen.
oga York, if you cannot get your security clearance stay in your country. It's not by force. If you were important you won't be on twitter crying wolf.
ReplyDeleteThats cos d federal govt (gej) wants to rig
ReplyDeleteJonathan's plan to rig the elections knows no bounds. He's even barring journalists and ensuring no intelligence is on ground!!!
ReplyDeleteWhere is our PVC? INEC is " dependent" on Jonathan. DNEC.
Yes, I support the idea of blocking foreign journalists from "reporting" about our national elections. They always have a way of propagating false propaganda against Nigeria and Africa in general.

ReplyDeleteThey know wt they wanna do
ReplyDeleteoga stay your country.na by force to allow you come here
ReplyDeleteThat's cos they have sth to hide... riggers of election.. which way Nigeria? ?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't seem like a wise thing to do, they should be allowed access into the country but due process must be followed.
ReplyDeletePart of Jonathan evil way to get the election Rigged, i dont know what wrong with that little boy though, only Jah will help us this Election.
ReplyDeleteDon't know how true this really is.

ReplyDeleteAwwww? Not to worry, NTA will cover it and you guys can piggyback on their own report. Runs away!
ReplyDeleteShow is it by force? They should stay in their country now afterall when we are battling EBOLA did any of them willing to show face...
ReplyDeleteBecause they want to rig the election. So they don't need the foreign eyes to watch them like hawks. I suspect the ruling party.
ReplyDeleteErm excuse me? The elections are just two weeks away, why are you only applying for Visa's now? When Nigerians visit your countries do you know the restrictions they face, how long they have to wait and how much they have to pay often just to be refused the visa altogether!
ReplyDeleteMy friend go and hide under a rock somewhere. When it's negative news you are happy to publish it. Mind your own business and go look for bad news in your own country after all it can be found everywhere.
Enemies of progress kmt!
I wish thats true. Ndi ocha Na asiri lol.

ReplyDeleteA ego, go sit down. The EU monitors are here already so wetin be you problem. If you come and Bokohari's people kill you, then they will say Nigeria did not offer you protection. Abegi. Next
ReplyDeleteWhat is this one's problem? We have EU monitors on ground so what is this oyibo mercenary trying to insinuate. In these days we need security clearance o because oyibo too dey too terrorism
ReplyDeleteEh heh? So get security clearance abi you don't know the South Africa is an exporter of mercenaries? Eu monitors are already on the ground and they got security clearance. If you can't wait to get yours don't come abegi
ReplyDeleteSee this one o...ah wetin person no go hear. They say there has to be security clearance in this age of terrorism and you are tweeting. What exactly is your agenda?
ReplyDeleteOyibo people too dey do terrorism so I am with the Nigeria security on this one. We have to know who we allow in.
ReplyDeleteBecause you are white you don't think you should be subjected to security clearance? Arrogant oyibo people. Please go sit down joor. EU monitors are already here
ReplyDeleteSo the EU monitors that are already here are not good enough? If you do not get allowed in to Nigeria no big deal. Go sit down joor. Hungry journalist you want to come get some oil.
ReplyDeleteThey should allow them to enter no big deal
ReplyDeleteWhat is this one's problem? Abi he does not know the EU monitors and the journalists attached to them are already he. Every Tom Dick and Harry wants to get to Nigeria to advance their careers. Abegi go sit down.
ReplyDeleteMr journalist or whatever, Nigeria has the right to allow or ban you. EU monitors are here so what is your problem?
ReplyDeleteIf Nigeria were to allow every journalist, then terrorists also from all sorts of places will come to join their Boko brothers. Mr oyibo, you should patiently wait for your security clearance.
ReplyDeleteCos nigeria are corrupt. They don't want the world 2 no
ReplyDeleteIt is very annoying when these racist whites start poke nosing into matters that don't concern them. Why insult the Nigerian official? You are probably lying or are we to believe you because you are white?
ReplyDeleteThe era of the worship of white skin is over. This one thinks that he should not get security clearance because he is what? Oyibo? Abeg. Oyibo these days steal, lie, commit terrorism just like other people. Go sit down joor.

ReplyDeleteHmmmm...I wonder what could be the reason
ReplyDeleteSome of these so called foreign journalists were hired by APC Foreign PR Consultants. They are not objective or truthful.
ReplyDeleteCould it be because a certain ruling party does not want external interference poking their noses around when they want to play wayo with the election results.
ReplyDeleteRigging don start be that.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, visa office should fashion a special visa that takes them straight to Baga, no transiting at all in Lagos or Abuja to sit at the Hilton and manufacture some phanthom. Straight to Baga, ka ji kwo?
ReplyDeleteThe so called Journalist should be scrutinized before entry into our country.
ReplyDeleteThey did not offer enough "egunje". Identify a "friend" in the embassy or high commission and "roger". Everything will fall in place.
ReplyDeleteThey shouldn't allow them to come. I think america have a hand in sponsoring boko haram. So they want to use d election as an excuse to come to naija. So make una no come. Obama is a radical Muslim. He's jst deceiving people.
ReplyDeleteA Lot of blind people commenting on this blog...if a journalist wit valid credentials wants to enter a Country to report on an election..wat is d reason for stopping him? Stop dis false sense of national pride...an open govt will allow d outside news agency cc and and possibly root out bad eggs wit evidence in hand...but no so many r applauding d steps to have rubbish hidden in d dark smh
