Doyin Okupe just set his boss up...lol

Presidential aide Doyin Okupe just set his boss, president Jonathan, up by asking a simple question "Stealing and corruption, is there a difference?"

Well, while responding to a question on his efforts to stop corruption during a presidential media parley which aired on national TV on May 5, President Jonathan said;
“Over 70% of what are called corruption, even by EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies, is not corruption, but common stealing,” adding that corruption claims appeared “politically motivated”.
Well, some Nigerians had answers for him. See the tweets after the cut...

Since the President made the comment, no one has been able to use any evidence to contradict him. Stealing is different from corruption. Check your dictionary.

  47. Linda, the President is right and Dr. Okupe was just re-echoing what the President said. If you check your dictionary, there is disparity between stealing and corruption. I listen to the that President media chat and what the President was inferring was that when a man dip his hands in the public tilt is outright stealing and people should mince word by saying they are corrupt but they should call them thieves. When you use your position to curry favour, then that is corruption. A man that take a goat from the market is not corruption but stealing. When you use your official position to collect bribe from the public that is corruption.

  69. Maybe he was trying to tell us that corruption is an intelligent way of stealing. While stealing could involve violent or forceful acquisition of what belongs to another person, Corruption is an intelligent, cunning, dishonest, way of acquiring what belongs to other.
whatever name designed for it, corruption is even worse than stealing because it is a betrayer of trust by those in whose care is our national treasury. It is highly disheartening to hear this myopic view from our leader.

  87. cor·rup·tion/kəˈrÉ™pSH(É™)n/
    noun
    1. dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.
    2. the process by which something, typically a word or expression, is changed from its original use or meaning to one that is regarded as erroneous or debased.

    steal/stēl/
    verb
take (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it.
    move somewhere quietly or surreptitiously.
Let's compare the dictionary definition of the two words the answer is there. There are both crime but the English dictionary didn't indict stealing in corruption definition. English language is a borrowed language and we tend to misquote or understand some of it words in our ways.

  126. Stealing here relates to government officials who indulge in it. Government officials in Nigeria are largely corrupt, that's the reason why they 'misappropriate'(another word for stealing) fund meant for the development of the country, they divert it to themselves, families and friends. They don't follow due process when awarding contracts. They award bogus contracts, they inflate contracts, the extra cost find its way into their account. That's stealing. they do this because they are dishonest, which is corruption. They buy private jets, mansions abroad while the country suffer due to their practices. Government officials who are corrupt(dishonest) indulge in stealing public funds. Fela Anikulakpo Kuti call it 'Authority Stealing' and he said in that song it is worse than 'Armed Robbery', because it retard us as a nation, leading to wide scale ignorance, poverty, disease and death. Stealing is just part of corruption. Nepotism, favoritism and bribery are corrupt practices. In corrupt society like Nigeria, things are hardly done on merit. Tribalism is the order of the day. The massive fraud in many ministries and government agencies boils down to stealing.

  129. Was Lawrence 'the Law' Anini a common thief, a criminal, an armed robber or he was simply a corrupt Nigeria? Have we heard someone describe Sina Rambo as simply corrupt?
Corruption as defined by Transparency International is the "the abuse of entrusted power for common gain" so when a public official dips his hand into the collective till, it goes beyond "abuse of entrusted power for private gains", it simply stealing ala Lawrence Anini, Monday Osunbor and Shina Rambo.
To take a contrary position is to dignify what has become a way of life for a people. The moral decadence of an argument that equates stealing with corruption is not just pathetic but a sign of an even more insidious problem, a people's moral bankruptcy or illiteracy.
I believe that even the laws of the land have long made this distinction, prescribing a 21 year jail term for forgery and stealing and what amounts to s slap on the wrist for corruption
Pele! I appreciate that a lot of us, describing dipping ones hands into the public till as stealing will amount to calling ourselves thieves, but a thief you are, period!
As for the rest of us, please let us not dignify public officials who steal with less social opprobrious toga of corruption. They are all common thieves! @ credits JekwuOzoemene
