Update on Nat'l assembly palaver: Speaker finally gains access into House

Speaker of the House of Reps Aminu Tambuwal has finally gained access into the House Chamber. There was chaos outside the Assembly complex this morning as police tried to prevent him and other lawmakers from entering the complex. Some had to scale the gates after all entry points were sealed off leaving only one open where many were thoroughly frisked and some turned back. There are allegations that most of the lawmakers turned back were from the APC. The police at some point even fired teargas and some lawmakers reportedly fainted.

Tambuwal, who had been prevented from driving through the second gate after passing through the first gate of the Assembly complex was smuggled into the Chamber by loyalists who overpowered security operatives at the second and third gate. The House has now gone into executive session.

See photos and account of what happened by Tambuwal's media adviser after the cut...

    2. You're the ignorant fool here. Constitution says you lose your seat if you decamp, unless there's a division within your party.

Tambuwal claims there is a division in his party, hence his defection. The case is in court and only the court can decide at this stage. You Jonathan supporters are as daft and clannish as your principal. Mumu!

National Assembly is in disarray! this just goes to show the impunity of the federal government and the way they use the security forces as their personal watchdogs!!!! was all this called for????? after foolish people will come out and scream PDP/GEJ till 2019! this is worse than the military rule! it means you don't have freedom or right to anything! these are elected officials that are being treated this way and the worst bit the #4 citizen of this country!!!!!!!
For me this is the first time i was in awe of our legislators, today they put aside party loyalty, personal grievances and came together as one to fight a common evil. If i were in the place of authority i would start pushing for the impeachment of Jonathan. He has completely failed us as a leader, if he gave the go ahead for this dastardly act.

  19. This is what is called rule by thugs. If you do this where you have real constitutional order, Mr. President, you loose your job. You will be impeached. But in that hell hole anything goes. The executive can stop the legislature from sitting and there will be no constitutional crisis. What do expect from a country that mints billionaires overnight even when you can't get clean water to drink.

wen he was denied rights of access to the villa wen yar adua was sick wen turai and the cabal refused him entering Aso rock and assume leadership Nigerians fought for him the late Dora fought for this man that ahd no shoes while growing up (according to him na who we go ask).
now he has turned to a tyrant.
the president has no right to lock up the national assembly the president has no right to bar an incumbent speaker especially wen he is not impeached. this is why rotimi amechi was fighting gej.
tambuwal defecting to Apc wont stop gej from wining his election so why attack tambuwal why prevent him from doing his legislative duties.
Jonathan feels he is god Jonathan feel he has exclusive powers to do and undo. one day he will leave that office he will account for all his deeds.i have said my piece Nigerians need to rise upa and vote him out

  56. 1. My heart is pierced. This report is perturbing. Im sad. We have denegrated so low. This is beyond party sentiments, tribal interests or religious affiliation. A crime against the collective interest of this nation has been committed by the police and other security operatives whose duties are to uphold the same constitution they have now poured slim on.
    2. Am gladden, because in the midst of this gloom there is hope. Members of the House of Rep has shown solidarity and wisdom by supporting and shielding the Speaker. This is not about his part or his religion or his tribe or his political ambition...but the sanctity of his position.
    3. And for those who are blindly decided to follow GEJ to the grave and excuse all his apparent fallings, i wish them well. They should remember, Nigeria is bigger than one man, one family, one state, one region, one tribe, one religion...what goes around, comes around. we all will pay for this act of ignominy. I agree with Soyinka..we are under a cloud of shame.
    4. Finally...i wish i could go back to a few years, and pick the guardian newspaper tomorrow or sunday, and read Reuben Abatis column about this incident.. oh how i wish

Its quite a pity that such things are happening in this country because of 2015, am most worried that GEJ being the leader of this country would allow such things happening. power belongs to God Almighty, kings and rulers are made by God Almighty I could remember during the kitchen cabinet era, due to the oppression shown to GEJ he got sympathy from the common people of Nigeria, and coupled with the campaign slogans ''I had no shops'' that actually made the average and common people felt this man was the right person with human feelings, but what have Nigerians got out of his government, people losing their life's and poverty in the land corruption all over and the highest impunity have ever seen being shown in every quarters.

  58. In preparation for this, PDP has retired all the generals that can overthrow the government and has also engaged the remaining ones with Boko Haram problem while they continue to disgrace the country for whatever reason. 60. Hmmmmm.Am amazed, flabberwhelmed at the level of rascality going on in the Nigerian political praxis. ....todays melodrama is indeed a shame on our collective call for sanity and d sanctity of our constitution that all the honorable members swore to uphold.
Indeed, there was a country called Nigeria......so heart broken that its now abysmal of sheer display of impunity, rape and assault of d rule of law....worst is the cursing and gutter language we all use in either for or against our political inclination.......instead of us as a people to stand and collectively use the highest tool of a democratic professed people....which is public opinion based on rational thinking ability iirespective of who is wrong or right.
Worst is that some youths are now hailing and praising the Law makers that scaled the gate as a worthy course...Gosh, what has happened to our unwritten and written curriculum, our morality and our conscience that taught me at early stage of my development as a child that owners of house dont come through d back door neither through the fence but robbers do....what a descend from sublime to mundane, disdain, absurdity etc...and we are applauding such abnormalis.
No matter how I feel abt this, I still believe it all boils down to show that the will to cause the much desired change in our nation....it do not rest on any political plateform but solely on the individual ability to espunge all forms of greed and personal agrandization. ...lets not forget this in our opinions...and rise up as a nation and condemn this act by all law makers, the police and all elder statesman in our nation irrespective of the political party u belong to.
Afterall its still possible for a section or even d other party to equip themselves with constitutional meduims to address this matter.Mr president, d judiciary and the legislative arms of this nation has failed indeed.....all because of our bogus bags of interest.
