According to AFP, President Obama suggested that affected
African countries should focus more on building strong public
infrastructures.
"I think we have to let the scientist guide us. And I don’t think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful".
On whether he would help fast track the approval of the
drug should medical experts conclude that the drug is effective,
President Obama said;
"I think it’s premature for me to say that because I don’t have enough information. I don’t have enough data right now to offer an opinion on that.”
While stressing that the deadly virus is
not airborne, Obama said
He said the US is currently working with their European partners as well as the World Health Organization to provide resources to contain the virus."the countries affected are the first to admit that what’s happened here is the public health systems have been overwhelmed. They weren’t able to identify and then isolate cases quickly enough. As a consequence, it spread more rapidly than has been typical with the periodic Ebola outbreaks that occurred previously."

When Obama was elected people here where rejoicing that a black man with african roots was the american president and we expected favourable policies for Africa. Now we know that they really dont care. Since there is a drug Zmapp that cured two americans successfully, why not make it available to those dying of this plague. Was it approved when it was administered to the americans? Tthey can even use the africans infected as guinea pigs for the clinical trials...i'm sure those infected won't mind. They can administer the drugs with terms and conditions to be signed...i'm sure those infected wont mind. They can apply the drugs and isolate the recipients for the required time to ascertain the side effects as a condition...i'm sure they won't mind. People are dying...they won't mind whatever conditions are in place so long as they stand a chance to live. Life is paramount...once life is gone, nothing else can be done. For those commenting that they should follow due process for the approval of the drug, will you reject the drug if you or a sibling or spouse is infected cos it was not approved, i think not. Let us be our brothers' keepers. People are just making comments cos it does not affect them. Approve the drug first they say...as if after it has been approved it will resurrect those that have died. I know that our leaders in africa has failed us and it is a crying shame that we always have to look to the west for help, when we really should put structures in place to ensure that we can be self sufficient...and it may seem that i am playing the blame game here, but the truth is that the developed countries are PARTLY responsible for where africa is today. They came and forcefully colonised us and when they were leaving, they hande over in such a way as to ensure that we would always need them. They favoured some tribes, forced different cultures to live together in a country, which led to distrust and eventually due to myriad religous and ethnic differences, a bond could not be formed and corruption was given a fertile ground to thrive. However, i underscored partly cos we need to use our brains to right the wrongs and resist neo colonialism. We have not done that yet but i am optimistic that africa will eventually get it right. But there is a proverb that says the mother hen will first drive away the hawk before chastising the chick for wandering. We need to drive this plague now...so we need the drug. In the eyes of God, one life is just as important as the other , be it African, american, asian or whatever.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't fault Obama too much. The reality is the drug was only effective on 43% of the primates it was tested on. This may not be a cure with bad numbers like that. Other experimental drugs are out there with 100% cure rate of primates. The FDA has already authorized the release of the other drug with the higher cure rate. Plus, it has already started a safety test in humans.
ReplyDeleteTekmira from Canada has been working on this for years. I've found four companies that have been working on a cure for years. Tekmira is the one furthest along with the highest success rate in pre clinicals treating primates. That's the one I'd want to try if I were sick with ebola.
