LASU students reject school fees reduction by Governor Fashola

Lagos state University students have rejected Governor Fashola's proposed 34% and 60% across the different faculties and courses reduction in school fees.
At a press conference held yesterday June 12th in Ogba, the President of LASU Student Union Government, Nurudeen Yusuf, said the state government should spell out the proposed new fees in Naira and Kobo rather than this percentage as their parents who are responsible for the payments do not know how to calculate in percentage.
"We do not accept the 34 to 60% reduction of the government because in 2011 when the fees were increased, it was not done on percentage level; rather, they made the pronouncement in Naira and Kobo. We urge the government to come out in words as to how much will be paid by our students in Naira and Kobo and not in percentage. How do they expect our parents, the market women scrambling to pay our fees, to calculate the percentage? The government is only trying to play games with our future. We question their sincerity on this matter because the pronouncement of the fee was as a result of a visitation panel set up by the government of which the report was selectively adopted" Yusuf said

  7. I don't understand their reasoning. If their parents are vendors, they should be able to do basic math. Why not reject the reduction because it still leaves an affordable education out of reach? Students, just say you want more negotiations because the fees are too damn high.

Or its all of the above. If intelligent, smart or brilliant ppl talk jst sit and listen ok. Its common sense to spell their fees out in black and white no playing politics or games. Which one is 34%-60% across the departments? Which of the departments abeg let the government come out and spell it all out for the students and affected parties

  53. I dont expect Nigerians to be surprised for all the happenings shooting out.We should also not panic. All we need do is to look out for solutions.
In 2012,oil subsidy was removed,In 2014,electriity subsidy was also taken off.Now its educational subsidy and please dont be surprised by the time they come up with air subsidy.By then,Nigerian will be paying for the air they breath.

For full enlightment on what is happening in our society since the elected president took over the presidential villa,I will recomend a book titled: People Power in Africa: A WEEK THAT CHANGED NIGERIAN FOREVER WRITTEN BY MOSHOOD ADEMOLA FAYEMIWO PHD AND MARGIE MARIE NEAL ED.D .

The authors began the Introduction to the book with the origin of the contentious issue of subsidy withdrawal on petroleum products in Nigeria describing the beginnings with the Yakubu Gowon military regime at the height of the world energy crisis of 1973 and the various successive governments except during the regime of General Muhammadu Buhari of 1984/1985 and the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua –the only two administrations that reduced the prices of gasoline for Nigerians. The authors narrated the anatomy of the debacle called withdrawal of petroleum subsidy by Mr. Jonathan on New Year’s Day and the part played by Dr Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s current minister of finance the architect of the unpopular policy and the agent of the two world imperialist agencies: the IMF/World Bank in Nigeria.

    BOOK NOW AVAILABLE AS EBOOK.

  56. This is Naija and those students know what they are saying. Government will come out tomorrow to say that 35% of bla bla bla is so so and so. Then another fight will erupt. I expected everyone here to understand what the students were saying. It wasn't all about calculations, it's about twisting the calculations tomorrow. Let's stop claiming 'I too know'- Most of you saying they aren't brilliant enough to calculate the figures are the real illiterates here; for finally failing to figure out the simple gesture these students just made. Pretenders claiming brilliant. Iriots in Okon's voice.
