Wife killer Akolade Arowolo found guilty of murder, sentenced to death

Arowolo Akolade, the man who stabbed his banker wife to death on Friday June 24, 2011 after a domestic dispute at their home in Isolo, Lagos (read the story here), has been found guilty of her murder and has been sentenced to death.

Akolade appeared before trial judge Justice Lateefat Okunnu of the Ikeja High Court this morning Friday Feb. 21 and was found guilty on one-count of murder. The judge said the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that he killed his wife.

"I pronounce the defendant guilty and accordingly sentenced to death,” Justice Okunnu pronounced. Akolade burst into tears after the verdict was read.

Akolade and Titilayo had been married for only two years and had a young daughter when he brutally attacked her with a knife on his birthday after they argued. Arolowo claimed in court that Titi had attacked him with the knife and eventually turned the knife on herself. The court didn't buy his story.

  26. Hmnnnn some cases are beyound common sense u need forensic experts and some speciallist. We have wat is called self inflicted wounds or injuries. How can dis judge in dis case prove dat d injuries on onlady was not self inflicted. Where did dey all do d measurement of d knife and d spot of injury. Some judges in nigeria have made d wrong person paid undue price, I am not saying dis guy is innocent I dont care I am only looking at d probability dat d judge could be wrong. We have seen people stab dem selves before stabbing d person dey arr fighting with but only experts or withnesses can say wat is wat. I implore dis guy to appeal if we have anything like dat. D daughter will be mother less and fatherless both families can never settle

  139. @Badoo, are you human. If he raises his child you think she would look at him and say oh my dear father that stabbed my mother to death, let us live together in peace. This is why in Naija we are deceived by all sorts. People say o it was the hand of satan or I did not do it intentionally. We have absolutely no sense of repercussion. As a man, I do not expect more from you. Cause in your mind, you are still thinking she must have provoked him. All you closet bullies, that only show your silly strength when it has to do with your helpless wives. Take your bullying outside na to a person that will match your mouth. Naija women check the men you marry, if they are lax towards domestic violence...you better be ready for blows and punches.

  142. Looking at the previous story, and all the comments, Bonario has really come a long way o, only that bloglord now comments on stella dimokorkus alone..,unfortunately, me I don't have the strength to comment on every post again, but Linda well done...unfortunately Akolade has to go tho, when I first read the story I tot to myself, he was a provoked man, the wife probably brought the knife to kill him, but the situation that led to this men should learn not to hit their wives.

  146. I'm sorry I believe in justice for all but I don't in believe the death sentence (especially in a developing country). Nothing changes the woman is still dead, if you've lost someone you'll understand that nothing can bring back that life back. Their daughter is now an orphan. is that really justice?

  149. I can't believe some people here are talking nonsense. If someone stabs your daughter 76 times come and talk to us about 'reformation' or 'human rights'. Trash.

  150. Strictly based on the evidence, before the court along with the plea of the defendant, it was wrong to sentence him to death. A murder sentence can only be carried out if the case can be proven beyond reasonable doubt. The basis for conviction even according to the judge is circumstantial and highly so. No forensic evidence was examined behind the evidence of the forensic pathologist who perhaps confirmed the obvious ie she was stabbed. Countries like the united states of America with a more developed better trained and relatively honest police force is replete with a history of wrongful convictions especially death sentences which were eventually overturned when new evidence is brought to light. The cases usually look airtight initially necessitating the sentencing but when evidence is based on circumstantial facts and cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt, hmmmm the death sentence is a place from which you can never return. An injustice that the land must pay an untold price. Nigeria is still reeling from such.
