South Africa unveils giant Nelson Mandela unity statue in Pretoria

A day after the anti-apartheid revolutionary was buried, South Africa unveiled a giant 30-foot bronze statue of the former president. The unity statue was unveiled today December 16th on the lawns of the Union Buildings, which is the seat of government in Pretoria.

  70. Dear LIB readers, one Chukwudi Blessing wrote and I quote "Awww...that's so nice of them...wonder if nigerians will put up a statue of OBJ when he dies" Not sure if Blessing was serious or joking, but i think is ridiculous to try to compare Mandela with OBJ. Mandela fought for the underprivileged and oppressed before and after his incarceration; and when he was in power, he used his good office to improve the lives of his people. OBJ on the other hand, was a corrupt and greedy military man who ruled as a military head of state and did nothing. His greed drove him to substitute his military uniform with Abgada as a civilian president and still did nothing other than to strengthen the culture of corruption in Nigeria. First, he looted the treasury of Nigerian as a two-term president, wanted a third term; which was frustrated by well-meaning Nigerians. Then he actualized his third term ambition by installing a gravely ill Aboki Umaru Musa, who like OBJ did nothing. When Musa died OBJ imposed another do-nothing president in the person of Dee Jona, who has since being installed taken corruption to an epidemic level. With that said, tell me why in the world any right thinking person would suggest immortalizing Mr. Obusonjo like Mandela.

  81. See how fast they erected that statue, within a fortnight of his death, it is standing majestically in the lush green of wherever. If it was Nigeria, it would take five years of committee sittings to approve the erection, and 2 years of deliberation and contract jostling and then 3 to erect a half baked statue!
