Jonathan moves against Oduah, as another minister is made to sign BASA

The Bilateral Air Services Agreement is supposed to be signed by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation but when it happened a few days ago in Israel, it wasn't Stella Oduah that signed it. In a move to show that he is serious about probing Ms Oduah over the N225m bulletproof cars bought for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, President Jonathan asked the Minister of State I, Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, to sign the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government. (Pictured above).

Thing is, BASA has nothing to do with the Foreign Affairs Ministry. The other thing is, Stella Oduah was present at the signing...but she sat with other Nigerian delegates as an observer.

While explaining why she joined Pres. Jonathan's delegation to Israel last week, her special adviser on media, Mr. Joe Obi, said it was to sign the BASA. President Jonathan decided at the last minute to keep her from signing on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria. See a pic of Stella Oduah at the BASA signing after the cut...

  3. A bilateral air service agreement is concluded between two contracting countries and liberalizes commercial civil aviation services between those countries. The bilateral air services agreements allow to the designated airlines of those countries to operate commercial flight that covers the transport of passengers and cargoes between that two countries. Also they normally regulate frequency and capacity of air services between countries, pricing and other commercial aspects.

Bilateral air service agreements later expanded into multilateral air service agreements. “A multilateral air services agreement is the same as bilateral air service agreement, the only difference is that it involves more than two contracting states” (Wikipedia)4. These agreements later led to another form of agreement known as open skies agreement.

  18. Our President prevented Stella Oduah from signiing d BASA with Israel on behalf of Nigeria - what a shame! I believe that an accused is presumed innocent untl proven otherwise. Whosoever toes u treaded upon dear Sis, may God deliver u. All I perceive is PHD syndrome. Was it not dis same Stella that d Senate Chairman on Aviation praised to high heavens for outstanding performance? Yesterday it was Hossana, today is crucify her! LET'S KNOW WHO IS BEHIND HER TRAVAILS!!! Its our right to know.

  19. Linda, did you write this or did you copy it from another source? I ask because if you wrote it, then am afraid you are really naive when it comes to how government functions. First, did you find out who signed the same agreement for Isreal? The BASA agreement was signed by the deputy Foreign affairs ministers of both countries. That is the usual practice in bilateral agreements. Such agreements are either signed by the Presidents, or the foreign affairs ministers. If you had asked, you would also have been told that the Isreali Aviation minister was also present at the signing just like Oduah.

Please show some level of knowledge in these things before you publish.

NB. You are free to publish my comments or not, but I hope you got my point.

  20. All na Wash...She was present at the meeting right? Forget...no be Naija!!! Imagine if she signed it...Nigerians would Scream!!!

Jonathan is not a dumb man. Corruption must not only be fought. Corruption must be seen to be fought.

  35. If I were in her shoes I would voluntarily resign before the bubble burst. But unfortunately, the culture of resignation is far remote in the lives of Nigerian public office holders. I must give the Nigerian public credit for speaking out. We should not relent because this is the only way we could bring about the needed change we are longing for. Corruption remains the bane of our society no doubt. And our leaders have remained the beneficiaries of the corrupt & deffective system. This is why they can do anything to maintain the status quo rather than fighting against it.
    May God help us!!

I do not buy this story for one bit. Its highly possible the agreement was signed by someone else but would still be overseen by Stella. Jonathan is getting craftier by the day in the art of washing and nigerians keep falling for it.

  70. Look at the disgrace we are showing to the world! How can a minister who is suppose to be under investigation for national crime be allowed on trips with the presidency? If he knew he wasn't going to let her sign knowing she her situation, he should have told her to stay back instead of these embarrasement. If we are trying to do the good things we should do it with an open and clear heart not sentimentally! Sponicobabani
