A Tale of Two Quotes! Here we go again! :-)

"We cannot continue to waste resources meant for a greater number of Nigerians to subsidise the affluent middle class, who are the main beneficiaries (of fuel subsidy). We believe that as we progress, government is going to continue to enlighten Nigerians on the need to remove fuel subsidy" ~ President Goodluck Jonathan
"Finally, for the avoidance of doubt and at the risk of being repetitive, this administration is not considering the issue of removal of fuel subsidy in the nearest future and certainly will not embark on any such programme without extensive consultations and engagements across the various segments, interests and stakeholders in the Nigerian polity."
~ Doyin Okupe (
SSA to President Jonathan on Public Affairs) - March 2013

  2. Lindiway the former was prompted by the reactions of angry Nigerians, immidiately the partial fuel subsidy was removed.
The later is just a recent attempt at dousing the fears of the public of an imminent total fuel subsidy removal.
so the quotes aint out of place.

    3. Actually Bona, the former (statement by Pres GEJ) was made recently, this month in fact, at the annual summit of The Economist News Magazine. Not sure of the exact date but it was sometime in the middle of the month. The same day that the Fed High Court Abuja, in a suit brought by activist lawyer - Bamidele Aturu, declared deregulation illegal. I know this for a fact because I read it myself in the papers. So Linda is quite right.

I'm not surprised about this double speak though. It was the same as how they practically swore they were still in consultations before abruptly removing fuel subsidy on 1 Jan 2012.

  11. Statements like this are one of the reasons why some people can't wait to see you leave Aso rock come 2015. Jona can't you see that oppositions will politicize this and use it as a frontier to advance their war for a replacement by 2015. The people are living in fear. This isn't the right time to make statements like this.

  13. There is a total disconnect between the masses and the government.
I suggest that no election should hold 2015 till we see answers to the many questions that have been lingering since 1960. I feel so pained that Brazil,Singapore and UAE are ahead of us in development.

  15. This Jonathan is an fool forget. EVERYBODY benefits from the fuel subsidy because everybody moves around!!! Everybody uses one form of transport or another. Vulcanizers use fuel. Pepper grinders nko? Dont the poor people give their kids transport money to go to school everyday? Doesn't the market woman use a bus or a taxi to convey her wares and even herself to her stall everyday?
This Jonathan needs someone to tell him things. Does he know the amount of buses in Lagos and how many people rely on them everyday to get somewhere or the other just to bring food home? This was what he said January 2012 that it was the kids of those in Lagos that benefit the most from the fuel subsidy. This man is not alright for this statement and this line of thinking.

  23. Please madam, read the two comments again. I think you are jumping the gun here. If you read Dr. Okupe's comment, you'll see that he is not saying anything different from what the president has said. He is only adding that they'll consult widely before removing the subsidy. Please, read the comments again.

  24. Jonathan was speaking at the Nigeria
Summit 2013, organised by The Economist, in Lagos, on Tuesday 19th March while Okupe made the counter comments a week later. The presidency is obviously is dire confusion

  25. Let's all be realistic here! To end corruption in this country, we need 2 start individually. Every1 in Nig is corrupt. Let's start by obeying traffic laws, getting our vehicle papers right, stop cheating people @ work or in business, stop encouraging ourselves and younger ones 2 use machineries for exams or cheat during exams, avoiding shortcuts and go 2ru d right means instead of bribing our way to the top etc. If they put us in this position of power, we might do worse.Except individuals change, Nigeria cannot change. Let's start grooming good leaders. God help us!

  30. This man, after being caught renting hideout to terrorists in Lagos, he decided to drop the fuel subsidy issue in order to pacify the people of Lagos and Southwest in general. Smart move.

  31. The two statements do not really contradict each other. One promises to eventually do it while the other says there are no plans to do it anytime soon. It doesn't say it won't be done ever
