Nigerian basketball player shot dead 'after trying to rob a home in Texas'

29 year old Chinedu Onyeuku, a former D'Tigers of Nigeria player, was shot dead in an alleged botched burglary in a home in Texas on November 21.

Police say Chinedu, who played for the Nigerian team that qualified for this year's Olympic Games in London, was trying to break into a home on Rio Grande Street in Plano, Texas with an accomplice when he was shot dead by the home owner.

Chinedu and another individual allegedly entered the house by breaking the glass patio door. The home owner shot Chinedu, killing him instantly, while his accomplice escaped.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation posted a statement saying that the 29-year-old athlete played basketball for the team that qualified for the London 2012 Olympics. However, Onyeuku was not on the Olympic roster and did not actually compete.

The statement reads: 'His passion for playing with D’Tigers was deep-seated and he will be greatly missed. The federation joins his family and team mates to mourn a departed son, father, husband and great patriot

  63. @Prince Charming i can see you are part of the Nigerians who talk without thinking. There is always 2 sides to a story so no matter how a story is told from one side you don't judge until you hear the other side and if for any reason you don't get to hear the other side then you leave the story and don't pass judgement. It is said that when a fool keeps his silence he is counted as wise. Proverbs 17:28

“It’s a pretty complicated investigation,” said Tilley. “The delay was based on a lot of critical information and evidence that needed to be gathered.”

  87. I saw this news yesterday and I still dont believe it. I went and read through the guy's twitter, saw his facebook page, and this was clearly a man who loved his family, especially his sons. One of his last tweets was at his little boy's football game. Being in the developmental league, even though they dont pay much, he had a job and they pay enough to take care of bills. He wasnt armed either!

I dont know him, but I do know the real story will eventually come out, regarding whose house it was, and the person that was supposedly with him. What we will see is that it was someone he knew, and that it wasnt a robbery.

May God comfort his sons, and the rest of his family.

  103. I lived in Houston(Texas)for 6months where I had my baby and I didn't realise or felt any danger there, although I read the dailies frequently where I saw drive-by shooting etc Nigerians(ibos in particular)i have met,am not being tribalistic make it a habit to soil the country's image(I don't know about this Chinedu and am not insinuating he stole),they will cheat foreigners(even their fellow Nigerian brothers)without any iota of decency.I have been their victim many times, they refused to go back to Nigeria! When they sell items, its most likely fake,if you challenge them, they will claim you did not buy it from them! The most disgusting one was when I went to Switzerland for a holiday with my husband, some ibo boys where trying to con a lady(to think they are yoruba)by speaking yoruba, worst of all with an ibo accent! My husband who lived in California(before we met)heard of Nigerians who actually break in people's homes when owners go to work!one was lucky bc he thought owner was away, when he knocked, owner was sleeping only for him to enter and owner woke up!He was lucky he escaped. My point, although I live in SA now,I plead with the Nigerian govt to beg embassies to avoid all these jobless boys leaving the country, the Nigerian image all over the world has been messed up,it is affecting educated, hard working people like us and even our kids schooling abroad. These ibo boys(only bad ones) all over the world especially in South Africa should be deported back home. These are the same ones abusing Jonathan,Babangida,Alakija etc when they themselves are full blooded Nigerian citizens who are REAl dangerous criminals!RIP Chinedu, his might be a case of frame up etc but other bad eggs are not helping matters anyway.
