Robbers attack commercial bus, rape 18 female passengers

Eighteen women aboard a commuter luxury bus were reportedly raped in the wee hours of Thursday March 8th, by armed bandits few kilometres from Okene, Kogi State. The victims, comprising single and married women, were among passengers in the ill-fated bus with a Lagos registration number XM753 AKD, operated by a popular transport company (name withheld), which was travelling from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to Abuja, when the incident occurred at about 2.am.

One of the victims, who narrated the episode to Daily Sun, said the journey had been smooth from Port Harcourt till a short distance from Okene, when they ran into an ambush laid by the robbers.

“I was asleep when suddenly, I heard the sound of gunshots. The robbers shot at the driver’s side in a bid to force the vehicle to a halt. It was then I realised that they had barricaded the road with logs of wood. Then, they ordered all of us to disembark and marched us into the bush.

After dispossessing us of our money and other valuable items, then, they raped all the women in the bus, numbering about 18, one after the other. It was a traumatic experience which lasted for about three hours,”, one of the female victims who declined giving her name recounted.

Daily Sun learnt that it was indeed a pathetic scene as some of the female victims who could not conceal their pains wept profusely as they narrated their ordeal when the bus arrived its terminal at the Utako district of Abuja at about 10 am yesterday.

Kogi State police spokesman, ASP Okasanmi Ajayi, however, said the incident was not officially reported at the command. “I have made contacts to the various police divisions, but there is no record of the incident,” he told Daily Sun on phone

  1. Rape! That's what I fear most as a woman. I pity the women... But then, night journies aren't safe though they can be convenient.

  5. They should mention the name of the bus company so that all people will be aware. if the company were not prepared to report the matter then they should be exposed and put the company to shame.
The driver could have organised the whole show

  8. Corpers died travelling, women raped and robbed on a journey... it's so sad when one thinks of these things. Most drivers are reckless, bad roads, heartless perpetrators of crime, porous security system, corrupt officials...who do we blame? My only prayer, 'God please show thy mercy and lead us to our destiny as individuals and as a nation' Amen!

  9. @ Anon. 5:42am & 5:44am, its either you are an illiterate or simply have no sense. How can you possibly put the blame on the bus company? how is it their fault that they were doing one of their usual daily night trips and unfortunately bumped into robbers. there's nothing new abt this issue, it happens all the time. Robberies are very common with night trips and the people who do these trips are very much aware of the risk that they are taking to travel at night in a country were security and the safety of its citizens are not guaranteed. its jst by the special grace of God that some travel at night and get to their destinations hassle free.
let us always use our sense b4 commenting.

  22. If there was a god, this would be the perfect time for him to show himself and smite the criminals that committed these terrible acts. "GOd's" silence/powerlessness in the face of such atrocity should serve as a clarion call to Nigerians to stop waiting for divine help and get their shit together. It's up to us.

  24. I'm starting to think having a government doesn't work for everybody. You wake up in Nigeria and your heart dies a little bit at a time throughout the day because of one bad thing or another. We do not have a government because every single sector in this country reeks of incompetence. We only seemed able to rule ourselves in smaller numbers. From 1914 we were ruled by force until 1960. Since 1960 we have known no peace. What is it?!

  28. Nigerian Doctor Charged With Raping Patient Faces New Allegation Of Sexual Misconduct:
Linda, why haven't you posted the story of this Nigeria/American Doctor.... Dr Edwin Njoku raping women? Is it because he's not Yoruba? Does it mean this story is no news because he's Igbo? Post this news and prove that you're not a Yoruba hater and jealous of Yorubas like most Igbos are.

  29. y do I have this strong feeling that the police have a hand in all this scandals. They were asked to get off the road so they either handed over their guns to the rapists or did it themselves so that they can be called back on the road. Pls if it is N20 N20 that will make this ill stop, they should go back to the roads.

  30. The gleeful statement that no report was made to the police was adding an insult to injury. It shows that intelligence gathering in the police is dead. Why should police exhibit its ignorance of security happenings so much. Shouldn't the entire hierarchy of the police be sacked and new one constituted. The police has failed and that is why robbers, militants and boko harams are having field day.
To the raped, please take care of your health. No one can take away your pride.

  32. This is terrible......but everyone should know that night traveling should not be an option for anyone in dis country,,,,,traveling during the day sef has so many risks attached to it......may God console the affected women and they should seek medical attention quickly and as for the robbers/rapists,,,,may the wrath of God visit them......

  33. Saddened by this story. The truth is,that Okene highway has been a hotspot for armed robbers travelling from the East to Abuja or Kano in the past 5 years. It is a notorious highway robbery spot and yet you hardly see soldiers securing that route.
During my service year (travelling from Onitsha to Kano), whenever our bus get close to Okene, our hearts are always in our mouth because armed robbers terrorize the Okene highway a lot.On passing it,we always exhale sighs of relief.I nearly had a close shave with them in 2009 but our driver was alert; when we spotted them,we disembarked and ran for our dear life. We returned to our bus when the coast was cleared.
Government should do something about the Okene highway robberies. It is almost a daily occurence.
