Senate Rejects State Burial for Ojukwu

Yesterday, the Nigerian senate asked the Federal Government to immortalize the late Biafran leader who died last week in London hospital, but rejected the clamour (by some prominent Igbo leaders, and some South East Governors) for Ojukwu to be given a state burial.

The senate argued that giving Ojukwu a state burial would amount to a bad precedent. State burials are reserved for heads of state only, right?

Do you think Ojukwu deserves a state burial?

  3. No point vomiting crap here. Did Ojukwu's family request state burial for Chukwuemeka?. Without you saying it, Ojukwu will be buried in Igboland and Nnewi. As you know Igboland very well, you ought to know that Ndigbo do not bury their people outside their ancestral homes. It is not going to be like Abiola, originally from Abeokuta but was buried in Lagos. Do you not know this all along?.Why should he get a state burial? He never believed in Nigeria and even in death he wanted to visit countries that supported his Biafra cause.
    I dont have any thing personal against him but really he should get a local burial in his Igbo land.
    State burials are for Statesmen who have lived and fought for peace and stability of the State.
    Next please

  6. This is a very serious matter. It is a slap in the face and a very big insult dished out to the Igbo people in Nigeria and worldwide. We must NOT allow this. State burials are not only reserved for heads of state. HRH Dim Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu deserves full state burial. The Federal Government of Nigeria MUST accord Dim Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu full state burial as originally planned. Nothing less. Arewa Consultative Forum (Hausa / Fulani people / Boko Haram) must stop dictating to Nigeria. The decision not to give full state funeral to Ojukwu is what Arewa Consultative Forum (Boko Haram) wants. Those bastards secretly lobbied and blinded Nigerian senators with money for the current outcome of not to honour Ojukwu with State funeral. Fcuk Boko Haram. Arewa Consultative Forum (AFC), may you and your decendants rot in everlasting HELL. AMEN. I am fed up of them and their dark and evil influence on Nigeria. Enough is enough. I HATE HATE HATE these murderous and deceitful bastards.

    The Nigerian Senate's "unanimous resolution" is tribalistic and the handwork of (sharia loving and very corrupt) Arewa Consultative Forum (Hausa / Fulani Boko Haram). They HATE the Igbos and everything to do with the Igbos and Christianity. Arewa Consultative Forum (Boko Haram) used money to secure this so called "unanimous resolution".

    Arewa Consultative Forum (Boko Haram) represents Islamic extremists of northern Nigeria.

    The biggest problem of the world is terrorism by Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) members. OIC's current representative in Nigeria is Boko Haram (Arewa Consultative Forum).

    Boko Haram = Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar + Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs + Jama’atu Nasril Islam + Arewa Consultative Forum (a political and tribalistic organisation that is always up to no good).

    There must NEVER be sharia law anywhere in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross Rivers, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Abia or Anambra. Nigeria must break away from northern Nigeria to escape islamisation, Boko Haram, Islamic banking and those (blood sucking, devil worshipping and balaclava wearing) Arewa Consultative Forum (AFC).

  7. U are all idiots for talking trash about the dead and u should all know that ojukwu never fought against Nigeria instead he fought against injustice and unprovoke mass killing of igbos by blood sucking northern and know it we don't need the hypocritic state burial from nigeria gov't we the igbo are capable of giving our hero the kind of burial rite he deserves thank u

  8. No! He should be buried in his state- shikena. He was selfish and narrow minded in his beliefs.

  9. I Totally agree with you @Atobatele, he shouldn't be given a state burial for any reason infact i don't even understand why it was even considered in the first place. I mean even the Igbo's he claimed to have been fighting for he imprisoned a lot of them during the war because they didn't support him. I've read comments of people referring to him as a "Hero" and its just sad,cos all he did was fight for his own interest. I don't even want to go in on this.... strongly support the senate for this decision. RIP sir.

  11. Well, the head of Biafra will be buried as the head of state of Biafra in Biafra land. That's all that matters.

  12. @Atobatele

    Ojukwu should be given a local burial?

    Are you sick, mad or just taking the piss? How dare you?
    I find you comment very offensive. You are immature, misguided and ilinformed. Where did you school? Your stepdad's garden shed? What led the Igbos in wanting to break away from Hausa / Fulani people? Was it Ojukwu's plan or was it not for the Hausa / Fulani domination and the slaughter of non Hausa / Fulani people that led Igbos to want to save themselves from destruction? Are you serious? You're the biggest moron of today. Clap for yourself, daffie.

    BTW, get off that toy bike cos it's affecting your comments on Linda Ikeji's blog.

  15. Ojukwu would be given a befitting burial by ndi igbo. The man had a purposeful cause he pursued to the very last. For the scallywags pointing accusing fingers at him for cutting short the lives of Biafran soldiers and citizens;they must be in the cradle. Every war has fallen heroes and that's the story to it. Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu is an elder statesman who represented so many things to different people and mostly that of good and heroic attributes. The south eastern people are going to bury him in grand style I can bet on it. The man was the leader of the igbo race and therefore is deserving of a state burial well at least a sectional state burial. If the south south people were good enough and committed they shouldn't be found wanting in paying the last respects to the indefatigable Biafran warlord who sought for a position and stead for a sectional Nigeria where no group should oppress the others in leadership matters. Granted his plans were foiled but he remained the ever courageous figurehead whose talks and contributions were phenomenal.

  16. the senate in this case tread the right path. He doesnt deserve any state burial cos what he stood for was against the untiy of the country. A local burial will do.. Abeg make una no chop me oooo. D truth they say is bitter

  17. He deserve state burial. My reason? If every Tom,Dick n Harry can get national award for reasons am yet to see then why can't a man who stood his ground for his selfish ambition? At least President Obasanjo paid all his entitlement which amounted to over N30,000,000.00 and yet all other ordinary igbo soldiers that he used n dump died in penury. Yet he claims to fight for the Igbo cause!

  18. No! State burial is for departed Heads of State. Which state did he head? If the indigbo wants state burial for him, they should give him. Did he fight Biafra war on behalf of Nigeria? Was it to keep Nigeria together? All those liars and psychophants who are singing Ojukwu's praise to high heavens should shut their traps. Anuofias. Nigerians knows how to make the dead feel good about themselves. They will never speak evil of the dead, even if the dead man is evil genius himself.. No state burial for Ojukwu. Period! Next!

  19. sentiments aside,he doesnt deserve it cos he never believed in one nigeria even in death,he only fought for the ibos not nigeria,so given him dat is giving him wat he doesnt deserve,there are people who have died for nigeria and nothing was given to them,a sam loco,alex ibru even deserve it than him,i know they cannot be given dat but,they are more nigerian than ojukwu.that said,am out!!!!one love

We IBOS don't need your state burial or your money. You know what we can do, so go back to your village and lick your wounds because you are injured already.I tell you, you people are just playing for 45mins but the IBOS plays for 90 mins plus exta time and you know what it means. Go back home and ask your forefathers what i mean.

  21. Point is Anambra will still spend loads to give him a befitting burial. He was leader of APGA, and Gov Peter Obi is in APGA.

  22. Gosh Linda, pls enlighten some of your people on what a State Burial is all about. Atobatele et al. Bush Niger people. I dont agree that Ojukwu deserves a state burial especially for the role he played in Nigeria's history. He should be given a befitting burial in his home State though. But that should be between his family and the South East state's govtment. The Federal govtment should send a powerful delegation. That is more than enough and fair to all.

    ReplyDelete
  23. No point saying ill of the dead. Give him a befitting burial.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As an Igbo, I ask why State Burial. We don't need Fed Govt recognition. All we need is to give him a truly befitting Igbo burial.
    Those Igbo senators shouldn't have asked .... if the govt had offered on its own, fine. But to ask for State Burial is simply sentimental. We as Igbos like to think that every one must agree with us and if they don't, they hate us.
    Dim Ojukwu was not a Nigerian Head of State. Therefore he does not deserve a State Burial. However, he was the leader of Biafra which is pretty much Ndigbo and as such, Ndigbo will give him a Ndigbo State Burial. You are all invited!!!!

  25. he deserve more than a state. And it will be a shame for Nigeria if they do not do so

    Fucking yoruba people!!

  29. Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu deserves full State burial.

    In our so called Federal Republic of Nigeria (soon to become Islamic Arm-Chopping & Hanging Republic of Nigeria), so far, only six Nigerians have received state burials. The MAJORITY are islamic sharia law muslim Hausa / Fulani people. They take the piss in life and still fcukin dominate even in death. Where's equality or fairness. There's nothing United in Nigeria. Soon Hausa / Fulani people will impose star and crescent on the Nigerian flag. Here's the list of the six Nigerians who have received state burials:

    • Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Prime Minister (1957 to 1966);
    • Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, President (1963-1966);
    • Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed, Head of State (July 29, 1975 to February 13, 1976);
    • Gen. Sani Abacha, Head of State (November 17, 1993 to June 10, 1998);
    • Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar' Adua, President (July 29, 2007 to May 5th 2010);
    • Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, former Chief of General Staff during the Ibrahim Babangida military administration.

    If that vile, corrupt, rotten, thieving, evil, murderous and devious chimpanzee, Sani Abacha, can get State funeral, then our HERO, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba Nnewi) 1933-2011, who was the military leader of the breakaway State of Biafra during Nigeria's 1967-70 civil war, deserves State burial.

    I strongly recommend the immediate implementation of the following:

    • The longest street in Abuja renamed:
    Odumegwu Ojukwu Bulevard.  I don't care if no Hausa / Fulani person ever walks or passes through the street.
    • University of Abuja renamed:
    Odumegwu Ojukwu University (OOU). Or University of Ojukwu. Or Ojukwu University. I don't care if no Hausa / Fulani person ever attends the University. BTW, Hausa / Fulani people, Boko Haram and Islam hate "western" influences. So what da hell are Hausa / Fulani people doing getting "western" education instead of herding goats just like their evil and illiterate ancestors? Hypocritical bastards.
    • Abuja MUST be renamed OJUKWU.

  30. OJUKWU fought for his selfish purpose? Atobatale abi bataju n d rest of the anons are obviously 15yrs old my-mum-bought-me-a-bb readers who know nothing about history and we are in no place to educate you here.Go and ask your grandfathers,that's if they even existed @ that time.typical Yoruba mentality 'anything that does not exist within the axis of Lagos can't concern us'....You don't understand the hardship experienced during the war,to you;its like watchin the lord of the rings.these were real people who had a real cause and who paid with their blood.Show me a war that was fought for one man?surely they would be instigators and generals but the people fighting surely believe in a cause.And for your uneducated heads,Ojukwu wasn't the only commander there.He fought a let-my-people go war but because they lost,it seems to ur untrained reasoning 2 be selfishness.What if George Washington had lost the war(american revolution),the people would have turned to criticise him as a swlfish glory seeking general;d british wouldav burnt him and through history;you will hear of him as a traitor who attempted treason.If Moses had lost to pharoah,he'll be remembered as an ambitious jew.even when the isrealites were facing war n starvation,they began to blame Moses.But ibo people didn't do that.they idolise and immortalise him.Is it bad? If they choose not to give him a state burial,fine....its their precedent;reserved for the money laundering and self serving heads of state! But when the tears start rolling,the pain causemd by the bombing and murder by boko haram flows.you will remember Ojukwu saw this in 1966....this country just can't be one......

  31. I want to know , was President Musa Yaradua given a state burial cos he was a head of state. Was Obafemi Awolowo given a state burial cos he was never a head of state but a Nationalist and Yoruba leader. I don't think Ikemba himself would be interested in a state burial from the Nigerian Govt. Yes Nigeria granted him amnesty hence he returned from exile in Ivory Coast .I bet you right inside his mind he will forever nurse one unfulfilled dream that is the non actualization of the Republic of Biafra.

    Awolowo was tribalistic and people praised hin Ikemba on the other hand loved his people and sercrificed his life to protect their intrest and people say he was selfish . Ojukwu was a hero, with such enigmatic charisma that make people bow. I bet you if Ojukwu comes back in the next world he would still request for the cessation and autonomy of Biafra Republic. Let the Igbo Governos give him a befitting burial and forget about the so called state burial after all Proff Achebe rejected a national honor that some people may lobby to get.

  32. How do give a state Burial to a man that never believed in the unity or sovereignty of Nigeria, common sense.He should only get a Regional Burial. but he does deserve a respectful burial, the only other Nigerian would be Tunde Idiagbon.

  33. why should we give this traitor and Judas a state burial?! One Nigeria...forever!

    ReplyDelete
  34. @ all yes he did not need a state burial, but most of us here are just been sentimental. Ojukwu defended his territory after about 50,000-100,000 Igbos were slained in the north. When I read the lies from hell that Ojukwu took arms against his country it angers me more than the death of those killed in the war, becuase in every armed conflict, death and casualties is simply inevitable. But, Nigeria cannot talk about reconciliation and lessons of the war if the LIES that were first told that consequently led us to war is not debunked. 1966 coup was not Igbo coup, because there is nothing like Igbo coup. Secondly, the hostile and genocide killings of Igbo across Nigeria led to the declaration of Biafra. Thirdly, It was Nigeria in full coordination and support of foreign powers that took up arms, war planes, and all weapon of mass destruction and marched into Biafran territorials to kill, rape, and torture and disabled innocent citizens of Biafrans including food blockage against them. Biafrans did not wage a genocide war against Nigeria, but Nigeria waged a genocide war, and fought genocide war in Biafran enclave, and it was Nigeria who also declared the war over. Now, we should move beyond the ugly past of our history and forge together as one united country to prevent a repeat of the situation that gave rise to the birth of Biafra. The most and worst culprit that led to the birth of Biafra was the BIG LIES told by enemies of Nigerian Unity was that 1966 was an Igbo coup, and the BIGGEST LIE that will ignite further conflict in the future is the LIE that Ojukwu took up arms against the Nigeria, the right historical truth, is that NIGERIA TOOK UP ARMS AGAINST IGBOS, AND IGBOS TOOK UP ARMS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES, AND HERE LAYS THE ETERNAL TRUTH

  38. What is the purpose of Biafra? For us igbo people to divide ourselves from Nigeria because of how we felt we were treated.

    SO, WHY IN THE HELL WILL STATE GIVE A MAN WHO WAS THE BIAFAN LEADER A BURIAL? I WANT NIGERIANS ESPECIALLY US TO REASON AND NOT TALK OUT OF EMOTIONS ALL THE TIME.

    I respect Ojukwu, understand where he was coming from but It totally makes sense for the senate to reject. Ojukwu means a lot to igbo people but doesn't mean everybody agree with his policies because at the end of the day, WE ARE ONE NIGERIA.

Ojukwu should be buried within the confines of His Home land...Not be the Federal Government. Sorry but Federal Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for His Burial. If not soon, we will have to pay who No whose burial. Please lets cut the tribal blows!!! Just make ur point!!!!

  40. For the faithful departed Odumegwu Ojukwu, I sincerely feel he should be honoured by his state of origin- Anambra State. He shouldn't be given a state burial because he was fighting for a different cause, which was against the unity of Nigeria- which has today transformed to be a mini-America in Africa-where we have different ethnic groups/religions, living side by side with each other. Its been a tumultous journey for the unity of Nigeria, so I dont see how we can factor in Ojukwu who was in dupport of spliting this Beautiful nation into soo many fragments. One thing My fellow Ibos fail to recognise is that "Igbo enwe eze". We have a political history that makes us democratic and almost ungovernable, so even if Biafra was created it would have still spilt into different entites or countries. Let The Anambrarians and Ibos in the different states pay him hounour and give him a Biafran State burial. I am sure Ojukwu would prefer that

  41. I'm Yoruba, and this is not about igbos or yorubas, let's not make it a tribal fight. Ojukwu DOES NOT need a senate burial, period. Ojukwu fought for division. Of course, he had his good reasons. So, any thinking person will understand that if his plan came to fruition, Nigeria will not be where it is right now.

    We still have a long way to go but division, more division is not the solution to our problem. I love my igbo people, I'm married to an igbo man who speaks yoruba and I greatly respect Ojukwu in his own right but senate has every right to reject state burial.

    God bless Nigeria.

  42. I dont understand all this hype they have been giving the man.As an igbo man he was a leader but as a Nigerian he betrayed this country. This man is one of the reasons that issues of tribalism has continued to trail this nation and now they want a state burial for him! Seriously those clamouring for it should know that this is the federal republic of Nigeria and not federal republic of Biafra.nonsense

  43. So i have been going through comments here.People too dey deviate from issues at hand.Dem dey talk Ojukwu and state burial some people dey talk ACF.I got nothing against Ojukwu as a person and i admit he was passionate about igbo land not minding the consequences of that passion on the country.This is a man who wouldnt be a Nigerian if he had his way.So why on earth is this nation supposed to give him a state burial?Abeg make we no put sentiment for this matter.Ojukwu no be Nigerian statesman,na Igbo statesman.Let d igbo people give him a Biafran state burial cos as far as am concerned he did more harm than good to Nigeria.Maybe to the igbos as well cos for me,i dont think that day will ever come when i will vote an igbo man as president.
