Man beats son to death

Tunde Shitta, an auto mechanic, has reportedly beat his 11-year-old son, Toib Shitta, to death.

Journalists who visited Tunde’s home at 33, Adeniyi Street, Itire, Lagos; learnt from neighbours that he had on many occassions flogged Toib, leaving him with scars. A resident, who spoke to Punch on the condition of anonymity, said Tunde visited his anger on the 11-year-old boy after his new wife reported that he (Toib) disobeyed her.

The neighbour said, “On that day, his stepmother sent him on an errand but he refused because he was sleepy. When the father returned, she reported Toib’s disobedience to him and he flogged him.

“His father hit his head with a stool and then he began to bleed until he died.”

PUNCH METRO gathered that after the incident, Tunde did not report to the police but went to bury Toib according to Islamic rites in his grandfather’s compound.

It was gathered that police were unaware of the incident until Toib’s biological mother who had divorced his father, went to Itire Police Division to report.

When our correspondent visited the division, a police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the case was under investigation.

He said, “We only got wind of the situation on Wednesday night when a woman came to report that her ex-husband had beat her son to death.

“The suspect however claimed that it was while he was beating his son that the latter fell and hit his head against a stool. Tunde said when his son started bleeding, he was rushed to a hospital but died on the way.

“So, the police are investigating in order to ascertain if the father actually hit him with a stool like the neighbours claimed or he fell and hit his head. The stool has even been recovered.”

Another neighbour, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described Tunde as a man, who was fond of beating up his wife and children.

He said, “Before Tunde divorced Toib’s mother, he used to beat her. On one occasion, he stabbed her in the head. That was when she decided to divorce him, leaving him with her four children.

“Toib was only 11 years old and was in primary six at Itire Primary School then. It is unfortunate that he was killed by his father.”

Another member of the community, who also craved anonymity, said Tunde should be charged for also trying to cover up the crime.

“After killing his son, Tunde instructed his three other children to clean up the crime scene. I can only imagine the sort of trauma they are going through. He then went ahead to bury Toib without filing a police report,” he said.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said the police were investigations the incident.

“The Lagos State Police Command is poised to reduce crime to its barest minimum in the state and we will make sure no criminal goes unpunished,” he said.

  6. 'instructed his other 3 children to clean up the scene'??? This man is a beast and should be treated as such! it is such a pity our police do not have the facilities or know how to investigate a case like this. Recovering the stool is somewhat meaningless cos Niaja police no go fit determine if the stool was used to hit the boy or if the boy fell on it. Oh how i wish we have CSIs over here. people like tunde shouldnt be allowed to walk the streets free. CALLOUS WICKED MAN (BTW i know there are 2 sides to every story but really,i dont want to hear the other side. this side shows the man as what he is already)

  15. wtf?! and den we call the white men "stupid" how is our disciplinary method helping put a kid on the right track? enough poverty to make a father pour his anger on an innocent soul! the Nigerian government should make it illegal to hit kids! it's not right! dier are different ways a child can be punished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. It is really hard sometimes to help or feel sorry for a society that refuses to help itself.

Neighbors had been seeing him hit this kid but yet no one did anything abt it.

Well because naija can't tell the difference btwn child abuse and home training .... until the child dies.
Police investigation in Naija = JOKE!

I just feel sorry for the innocent child and other countless helpless victims.

  21. I don't hear any body mentioned Yoruba here, is he not an Yoruba man.
If this is an Igbo man, all that you will hear is omo ibo, omo ibo, why other tribes do same thing, WHY?
As an Igbo man that i am, who leaves in Logas for many years before traveling out of Nigeria, we are not one hoohaa. Am sorry for the boy and the mother but for that Yoruba man, let him leave the rest of his life in jail. LET IT START.

  23. First thing that came to mind POVERTY!!..haven't you noticed that most of this incidents happen in homes with extreme levels of poverty..
Dude already has 4 kids in that ramshackle of a place..bet he's planning getting a second wife and producing even more kids he can cater for..
Time some Govt intervened and put laws in place where having kids is related to affordability..maybe stop them having kids left right and centre like bloody rabbits..just out of control..and the poor kids that come into the world have to bear the brunt of their impoverised parents frustration..RIP.lil soldier..

  25. No need to waste the nigerian cell rooms for some like this, the man killed someone and so therefore he should be killed before he murders more of his kids or maybe his new wife....
