Male Nigerian nursing assistant charged following death of 98-year-old patient in the US

A 43-year-old Nigerian nursing assistant, Hakim Ogunkunle is facing multiple charges in connection with the death of a 98-year-old patient that triggered a probe by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, US.

The GBI claims that Ogunkunle, a Certified Nursing Assistant Ogunkunle was responsible for causing injuries that led to the death of Edna Warren, a patient at Newnan Health and Rehab in May, 2017. It has charged him with aggravated battery, exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person.

More charges could result from autopsy after the findings are turned over to the local district attorney’s office, according to Public Affairs Deputy Director Bahan Rich with the GBI.

The incident occurred on May when Newnan Health and Rehabilitation reported to the Newnan Police Department that Warren had sustained a broken leg following physical contact with Ogunkunle.

According to the police report, Ogunkunle had attempted to get Warren ready for breakfast when she became combative and began kicking him. When Ogunkunle allegedly held her legs together to keep from getting kicked, he heard a cracking sound in her leg.

Warren was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery but died during the procedure.

Initial reports indicated Ogunkunle lied about the manner of which Warren sustained her injuries. After staff received conflicting reports, Ogunkunle later admitted he was scared he would get into trouble, according to the police report.

“After detectives received the report, we looked into it, and, based on cases involving elder abuse, we contacted the GBI,” said Chief Deputy Mark Cooper with the Newnan Police Department.
“We’ve continued to work side by side, with the GBI acting as the lead agency.”
The GBI’s investigation later concluded Ogunkunle intentionally caused Warren’s injury, according to Special Agent Fred Wimberly.

Two days later, Ogunkunle was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person.

Investigators are still working to determine if there were any other victims who may have had a similar encounter with Ogunkunle in the past.

Ogunkunle is currently being held in the Coweta County Jail where he is awaiting his first court appearance.

  1. Absolute BULLSHIT!
I went to University in Carrollton, GA which is 30 mins to Newnan. I used to drop off my classmates almost everyday at Newnan. The people there are the most racist mudafuckas you'll ever come across, so it doesn't surprise me that they are trying to blame a black NIGERIAN man for the death of a 98-year-old. 98 oh! For them, it's one thing to be black American but black and foreign? That's like a taboo in their land. These white people would look outside their window whenever I drove past. Oh and the day I made a mistake to go to a grocery store there, omo, I got stared down.

Once I graduated, I moved to New York. It's amazing how open-minded people are over here than in Georgia.

Poor guy. Hopefully he comes out of this victorious.

I am a current resident at Newnan Health and Rehabilitation. I am outraged at this. Like Ms. Gould stated there are many wonderful and patient CNAs who work long hours and deal with a lot of crap, for lack of a better word. This particular aide, that has been charged with this crime has always gone above and beyond his duty to assist me. He has always answered my lights in a timely manner and was kind and courteous. I hope that these charges are found to be in error. I am sorry for this residents family, and if he is cleared I hope the right person is found and charged. Oh and by the way, I am an elderly white woman, so there is no racism here. I just can't believe that the kind sweet man I know did this.

    1. Why don't you study a course that can help you find work or job in Nigeria and then go back home. If you are female, Paris is another option.

  14. I understand what you are passing through. It takes tough people to survive overseas. If the racism has started to affect you mentally, please leave. Your mental health is very important..

Come and start something small in Nigeria, settle down. Forget what people will say. Your happiness is important. If you still want to travel, you can patiently work out USA. There are lot of options overthere. Sometimes, people relocate to state/city where their skin is majority. That gives them some mental strengths.

Remember, health first. You won't like it if the mental breakdown turn to chronic depression. Be strong.

Leave and come back home. Your mental health is very important. You won't like it if that turns to chronic depression. Don't care about what people say. They are not there with you. It takes people who have lived abroad to understand what you are saying.

There are several things you can do with little cash in Nigeria. Come and settle down. Enjoy the little you get in happiness.

    Remember, money can't buy happiness.

  16. Hmmm! Perhaps the surgeon is a white and they want punish this poor guy cos he is a black (Nigeria ). A good surgeon should know that surgery for 98 yr old woman is last option cos the risk outweighs the benefit.
