The Food and Drug Administration says medications containing
codeine or tramadol should not be given to children. The body also warns
that these drugs could cause serious risks including difficulty in
breathing and death.
The
agency announced the new restrictions on the medications on Thursday
April 20, 2017 in a statement that reads,
'these medications carry serious risks, including slowed or difficult breathing and death, which appear to be a greater risk in children younger than 12 years, and should not be used in these children'.
The labels of all
prescription medications containing codeine or tramadol will now
restrict their use in children under 12 and recommend against their use
in children between 12 and 18 years of age.
Additionally,
the FDA recommends breastfeeding mothers not take these medications due
to the risk of serious adverse reactions in breastfed infants.
However,
the FDA did not restrict over-the-counter medications containing
codeine, such as flu and cold medications or cough syrups, which are
available without a prescription.

ReplyDeleteYou guys won't understand, we know it's not right but when u have a family member and loved one at home, watching him go through pains everyday of his life, from sickle cell, and he can only have a little relief with tramadol...then u will. FDA should find a cure or better option of pain relief medications and analgesics to people living with sickle cell and other life threatening ailments, with painful crisis all the time, cuz wat my brother has gone thru at dis his young age, many adults will rather die than go thru it, many adults can't bear it!
ReplyDeleteI feel where u coming 4m, your wil receive the D mighty one
DeleteFor sickle cell, why don't you speak to your consultant regarding Hydroxyurea or the blood exchange programme.
DeleteI am not sure if these services are available in Nigeria.
I also don't think consultants wouldnt want to prescribe codeine to a SC patient.
Wish you and your family member all the best. Please speak to your family members consultant regarding the exchange programme as its very good and slows down crisis.
My husband hasn't had crisis in 3 years, the only problem I have with it in Nigeria "is just being sure the blood isn't contaminated as their is no accountability in that country".
All the best dear.
Like they say, information is power.I remember back in uni days I took beneline (the old one with codeine), I was like a vegetable. Was happy to hear it was banned.@ Queen Ayaddoh,I know of someone who treats sickle cell. Saw him treat a guy yrs ago and the guy hasn't had the crisis after then.
