Okeke female hostel at UNN razed by fire (photos)

The Okeke female hostel at University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, was gutted by fire last night. According to an eye-witness, the fire started as a result of a spark from the wire when the school generator supplied power to the hostel. This is the worst fire incident in the university as neither the Dean of student affairs, the director of works department nor the Chairman of Servicom who came around was able to save the situation. After the cut is how a student narrated what happened...

Most painful is that men of the fire service who came around were incapacitated as they had no water. Even the director of works could not do anything. Lack of water in both the hostel and the neighbouring outing ones made even students who came to rescue the situation handicapped. Finally, men of the fire service returned after the whole of 300 series which is a total of 34 rooms had perished, thereby rendering 136 or more students homeless and useless as all their documents, property, and even possibly, compulsory laptops for which some are yet to pay up, have all gone up in ashes. A student who is an honourable member of the House of Representatives said she has written so many times about the connections to the appropriate quarters without any response. There is no functional fire service in the whole University town of Nsukka. The wild fire which is akin to what I watch in American horror movies could have been controlled if the works department of the school is well equipped. I would want to believe that the university administration will adequately compensate the victims; some of who are already enjoying their xmas holiday. In just a year, 3 female hostels in UNN had had fire accident. First it was Okpara hostel, then Aja-Nwachukwu and now Okeke.

  23. The state of this nation remains quite pitiable. Nothing is put in place for things that are to be done be done. If we had constant and well-manged electricity supply with quality appliances, there won't be any reason to be switching lines for the generators. If there was adequate water supply to each building, The fire service won't be having problems connecting to a water source. If the fire services are well equipped and employees are well paid and taken care of, they won't be arriving at a firefighting mission late and when they come, they will arrive with everything needed to deliver what is expected of them and save the day from a worst case scenario or stories that touches the heart and scratches the bum bum like some say.

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU! THANK YOU LINDA!
AS I DON GET ALERT GOD WIN!
LINDA THE DAUGHTER OF TITLED MAZI IKEJI WILL KEEP WINNING ALL THE DAYS OF HER LIFE!

When I got on LIB that morning, I had absolutely no iota of thought in mind on reading any title concerning the end of the year LIB Giveaways, not to mention expecting my name to pop up on the list of the extremely fortunate winner's who of-course didn't deserve it more than the majority of us that have formed the habit of commenting here by minutes but however by some kind of divine direction were picked.
Honestly when I saw that, the first natural reaction or stimuli my body sent me was that of a blurry vision. I had thought I was going into a swooning fit or passing out so I repelled the feeling with a very loud shout (not of joy yet but so as to make sure I wasn't falling into some kind of trance) clearly neglecting the rules of the office to the consternation of my colleagues who after learning what had transpired after they came rushing towards me were mostly not surprised like I was. For their mind, dem think say me I deserve am oh! After they had settled down and I having taking several tens of glances on my screen reading through the names for an umpteenth time, I confirmed the reality. My colleagues were not surprised as they knew that nothing ever gets in my way when it comes to LIB.

LINDA YOU'VE BEEN AN INSPIRATION TO OUR GENERATION
And the way I see it, YOU WILL REMAIN SO FOR A VERY LONG TIME TO COME
I have never been addicted to anything the way I am to LIB.
May God keep blessing you and your family for us and may all you touch automatically turn into GOLD!
    YOU ARE A RARE GEM!

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU! THANK YOU LINDA!

    1. Even in Bartho's time the fire service was whack. The fact is that UNN is still living under past glory and it's appalling that our national university is still in such a shape. I just pity those staying in Zik's flat. The school keeps playing with the lives of students. It doesn't bother them as long as they get the money.

  73. People can talk rubbish o, how can U say there is no active fire service in the whole Nsukka town. I was an eye witness from start till d last room was activated, the Enugu state fire service who's stations was almost opposite the school gate arrived early enough for the fourth room. I saw the volume of water jetted onto the fire but it was like it was kerowater. The fire was just burning with swag. I hav video clips of d water jet. Look at d pix above well U can see d truck sef. The fire service made impact, big one, but ran out of water and had to leave to get another. The whole 2nd flour went down b4 dey returned anyway, but they were active not minding that their impact wasn't strong enough.
