Soundcity TV replies Jude Okoye, and it's epic!

And the saga continues. Soundcity TV has replied Jude Okoye over his comments yesterday on Twitter. (Read here). Read Soundcity's reply below...
Dear Jude and @SoundcityTV Fans,
Thank you for your tweets Jude; we will certainly address each of these tweets, especially since they are some sorts of allegation:
  • Of course, we did not think we are doing your group a ‘Favour’. Just like any other artistes, if you have a great material, we will showcase it on our channel and various platforms. Supporting, promoting, nurturing a talent isn’t a favour. It is obligatory, indeed?
  • ‘Begging PSquare’ to Tour with? We needed the content? Soundcity is a music and lifestyle channel, music and music programming forms 80% of our content while lifestyle handles the remainder. We are pretty sure the expense of touring with you then was much more than rotating music videos, make a business case out of this and you’ll see for yourself why we wouldn’t have ‘begged’ as you have claimed in your tweets…but hey! We did it for the LOVE!
  • Your job is to co-direct videos, and manage the group and ensure you do things in their best interest ‘reasonably’. Ours is to play the videos if we see them deem fit. Luckily, all your videos are co-directed with Clarence Peters, one of Nigeria’s biggest music video directors, partly a Soundcity Alumni. Please read between the lines of ‘reserving the rights to play.’ to fully understand what it means. Meanwhile, interestingly…our job also partly runs along us advising your group as per better professional input from us, for free.
We suggest rather than you wanting to ‘create’ a union in ‘we artiste’…you should speak and deal with your group squarely. NOBODY ever asked for your group to perform for FREE, only that we asked for a reasonable performance fee. You wanted to charge 10 or 12 Million or so. We are glad that a lot of artistes came through and yes; they played to their fans at the free event, for free.
  • We don’t pay Royalties? Your job as a manager is to ensure your artistes’ get their royalty pay cheques. Check with COSON and MCSN, SOUNDCITY pays Royalties every calendar year for music use on Soundcity and on sister channels, the platform carriers (DStv) doubles that effort too. Perhaps you should ask your colleagues in the industry about how that works. COSON is the Copyright Society of Nigeria and MCSN is the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria, also you can learn more about COSON here http://www.cosonng.com
  • What Blackmail? You decided not to work with our brand, we decided not to work with your brand by withdrawing your videos from our channel and completely stopped doing business with you. Not sure that’s what ‘Blackmail’ means. You took a decision, we took ours too. Simple.
Lastly, we will do something rewarding for you today! Please tune in by 3PM to watch #PSQUARE: THEN & NOW! Fans will be able to catch videos from the early years to present and also, #PSQUARE vs. #USHER: ORIGINAL DANCE OFF! By 3:30 PM today. Really, there is no such thing as ‘Boycott’ in premium entertainment.

Actually, scratch that! We should but we won’t. We will do #CHRISBROWN vs #USHER: DANCEOFF for 3PM today instead, #ChrisBrown is trending right now on the Internet.
This is the last time we are speaking on this, we have a number one TV channel to run.
Thank you.

  3. Epic indeed.
But I think this is becoming unprofessional of both parties, and so immatured also, they should resolve their differences in private and stop harassing the public with tweets and replys.

  31. Most of these artists think they are doing their fans a favour but no we are doing guys a favour by listening to ur music, without us u guys are nothing, so psquare u guys should let this rest cos u guys sound like illiterates with ur tweets, I pray this wont be d beginning of ur downfall

    ReplyDelete
  32. Frankly sound city has dropped off the charts to the likes of HipTV and the reason is not far fetched. They are not professionals. I dont give a hoot about the Psquare brand too..But believe me they are professionals in what they do. How? professionalism in music video cable TV airplay means to give your fans (your core market) what they want not what you feel they want..imagine not playing collabo, shekini etc on sound city for petty, sentimental and shallow brand management capacity issue that tends to give you out as a shallow brand with no long term dominance strategy. Thats precisely what sound city has done..but guess what? the Psquare brand would play for whomever that is willing to pay them big bucks without beclouding it with sentiments.
Its little wonder the Gulder and other huge brands have since departed the sound city brand..even its home bred brand hosts have left in droves..
sorry guys, if i work for sound city, my career growth path is in the most naive hands, i would be looking for brighter lands..

  36. Everyone reserves a right to act but be careful, because your action determines another's reaction. I think this is a smart and fair response to the previous chats.
I'd also advice that we grow up and find better ways of dealing with such issues because if you guys continue, more skeletons would be eventually dug up.

  42. I hate Soundcity

    ReplyDelete
  43. Firstly this is a very unprofessional response from soundcity. Yes it sounds very ghen-ghen but if they had a PR agency or a communications person on board they would never post something like this!

The relationship between PSquare and Soundcity was a mutually beneficial one. Africa already knew PSquare before Souncity started working. In fact, Soundcity banked on the fact that people loved them and played their songs a lot in order to gain the viewership they required to become popular. SThe relationship was mutually beneficial - Soundcity got their rapid viewership growth and PSquare got more airplay.

When this issue came up, PSquare didn';t reveal the details, they only asked people to watch them on other stations. Soundcity released an unprofessional press release spilling their guts etc etc.

I think this is an issue of ego and pride between people in both camps.

Dear Souncity. As a PR person, lemme advice you. First you don't need to take on/ embarrass stars like this, there is always a better way. I'm certan there are stars that arent happy with you over somethin. What if they decide to ride on the back of this and speak up? What if they call for a boycott? Wise up and get off social media with all this mess! It aint good for your brand.

They can only dance and package. Nobody features them because they are not talented to add value to anybody. This is a feat that Tuface, Dbanj, Wizkid, David, Don Jazzy, Oritshefemi, etc achieved.

  144. Having studied the Okoye twins for over a decade, I can categorically say that they are humble and well cultured. The guys are very hardworking and the only thing they concentrate on is to make good music that appeal to their fans. I respect them for that.

One thing is to have talent, another thing is to have a goat-head as a manager! Tokin Kan once mentioned it in one of his wire-ups where he analysed how some artistes' career was cut short because of lack of maturity of their manager. A bad example is Dehinde who single-handedly ruined 9ice's career as a rest of his arrogance. Omo Bariga to nsebi omo VI!. Jude needs to watch it and thread softly.

  145. It is embarassingly shameful many Nigerians either act like, or really are, illiterates.
What really is EPIC about this? Well, many of us still do not know the meaning of the word. And all I'm seeing here is epic, epic, epic from apparently childish non-entities who dont have a name in their field (of endeavour).
    ARRANT NONSENSE!!..
    P-SQUARE DOESN'T NEED THIS 2nd Best channel..
