Photo: Ghanaian airline refuses to fly a Nigerian woman because she's in a wheelchair

Freky Andrew-Essien says she's been stranded in Ghana for two days now because operators of Ghanaian airline, Fly Africa, out-rightly told her it's against their company policy to fly anyone in a wheelchair. This is so wrong on all levels. Continue for more...

  26. This is discrimination, she has rights no matter what her physical disability is. If this true, I think Ghana has good human right activist who can stand against this, people with disability are been discriminated against in the society and now organisations want to do the same? not even Air transport organisations, this is totally unacceptable. For the main time, I will advice the woman to go ahead and fly Arik or another airline, but this matter needs legal intervention, it must not be over looked.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is soooo ooooo wrong! The airline must lift her. It's not like she's on oxygen or visibly ill. What nonsense?

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is a reflection of how backward they are<for Christ sake are those operators still living in stone age?with medieval policies? this is a disgrace to Africa to have a so called airline operating with these weird policies it is unheard of.

  48. I use a wheelchair and I fly a lot. Generally I am accommodated. Ghana is horrible though. Worst place I have flown through is Accra. You are segregated from other passengers and if you are flying with friends that can be tough. In Africa it is important never to make any assumptions. You have to let the airline know that you are a wheelchair passenger when buying your ticket and ensure they include it with your booking. This is for peace of mind. It is frustrating and annoying and depressing to have to be in a wheelchair and so in my case I have to ensure that my journey will be smooth before I take off otherwise...I was once carried off the plane in Nairobi. I didn't mind because they were soooo nice to me.

I wish we could be like the UK or USA - but we have a looooong way to go. Even getting into the bank in Nigeria is impossible cos wheelchairs can't fit into the security doors. I insist and raise hell and either get attended to outside in my car or they find another way for me to get in...

It is TOUGH. the society here believes that if you have a disability - you might as well die because there is no place for you. No step free access, disabled parking, lifts, disabled toilets etc.

I feel bad for this girl she just has to take a deep breath and suck it in and quickly find a way home - even if it is a bus - to keep her sanity. She can think about legal action when she gets home.

  53. When our organisation (Centre for Citizens with Disabilities) were calling for the past Nigeria government to sign the disability bill into law, most media outlets didn't take us serious. Because Nigeria government treat persons with disabilities with disdan, any country can do the same against Nigeria PWDs. Its unfortunate. Ghana has a disability law, she should contact disability rights groups in Ghana for support.
