Osun state replies Ben Murray Bruce - says he is mocking Nigerian workers

This evening Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce offered to donate his wardrobe allowance to Osun state workers who have not been paid their salaries for months (read here). Well, the government of Osun state didn't appreciate his 'kind' gesture and clapped back at him. They released a statement saying he is mocking Nigerian workers. Find the statement signed by the Director Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Osun state Governor below...
My attention has been drawn to a tweet by a member of Upper chamber of the National Assembly Senator Ben Murray Bruce of the PDP from Bayelsa saying he will not reject the alleged hefty pay for members of the National Assembly but collect it and donate to Osun workers. It is saddening and tragic that Mr. Murray Bruce whom many had
accorded a lot of respect is too early in the day joining the fray of politicisation and trivialising the salary issue affecting more than half of the states of the federation in this ridiculous manner. While Nigerians are in hot debate over the alleged jumbo pay and the mood of the country Murray Bruce seems to have turned the plight of Nigerian workers to a thing of an entertainment. Of all the states in the federation who are battling to pay salaries as a result of the precarious economic situation his party the PDP threw Nigeria into why is it that it is Osun he wants to take his pay to?
This is certainly playing to the gallery and nothing but a mockery in the faces of Nigerian workers and not only of Osun extraction. It is not only wicked but ungodly to play politics with the suffering of the people. If the Senator’s conscience tells him his pay is too high especially in the face of the prevailing economic predicament of Nigeria the most honourable thing to do is to lead a protest for reduction and not a self serving philanthropy only in the direction of Osun workers.
Semiu Okanlawon, Director Bureau of Communication and Strategy Office of the Governor Osogbo

Much as I think Sen Bruce is playing to the gallery, his gesture should be commended and applauded. This will encourage his colleagues to do same. As to why he chose Osun, why not? Is Osun not in Nigeria? Is he not a Nigerian?

    ReplyDelete
  36. The condition in Osun state is pathetic. Every Osun state worker has not been paid their salary since December 2014 till date... The bad part is that d people of the state majorly rely on salaries as majority of them are government workers. The people are literally dying. Its so bad that even professionals can barely transport themselves to work. I'm in total support with the senator. Even if he leads a protest, will the workers in Osun get paid? NO! So it's a good thing he collects the money and gives it to them. The state is accusing d past government saying they slashed their allocation...no one is a fool. The governor borrowed hundreds of billions to carry out unrealistic projects which generates no form of income back to d state from d FG, dats why they reduce their allowance in return to get it back. Its a deal they signed so I don't know why they are blaming d past FG. Aregbesola has failed woefully. But refusing help from a concerned senator is shameful and ungodly.
P.S; I'm a corper serving in Osun state and I've not been paid a dime by the state for the past 10months. Its the worst state in Nigeria as we speak. One can literally smell hardship all over the state.
