The Cable tenders apology to Wole Soyinka over Igbo report

Online news portal The Cable has released a statement of apology to Prof. Wole Soinka over reports he described Igbos as money-hungry people who vote based on their stomach. The statement below..
"The management of Cable Newspaper Ltd, publishers of TheCable, would like to make the following statement concerning our report on the lecture by Professor Wole Soyinka at the Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African & African American Research.  Soyinka was quoted to have made derogatory remarks about the Igbo over their voting pattern in the March 28 presidential election. He has since denied the offensive quotes attributed to him.
After an in-house investigation, we have come to the conclusion that the story misrepresented the views expressed by Soyinka in the question-and-answer session after his lecture. We take full responsibility for the inaccuracy and promise that we will continue to strive to improve our standards. Also, we wish to reiterate that we take our professional responsibilities very seriously, as our readers can attest to. We hereby offer an unreserved apology to Soyinka, Ndigbo and our readers. Signed: Management of Cable Newspaper Ltd

So if they did not apologize, you wouldn't have believed the prof? Even when there is video and audio of the speech he gave and the fact that a man with proven integrity like the prof says he didn't say it??

  8. Hmm ... What is wrong is wrong ... he has finally detached himself from such a hate statement ... For you all defending such statement shame on u ... He was wise enuf to disassociate himself 4rm it ..To think that some nigerians defended such statement means we still have a problem regarding unity, democracy and unbiased and untribalistic judgement in this country ... But what surprised me the most was that some igbos actually supported such statements .. chai abomination ..

  30. @Bonario, you were the one making jest of Ekiti people voting for stomach infrastructure, but you were quick to attack a man you once referred to as 'the conscience of the nation' over a fake report credited to him stating the Igbo voted for their stomach. Processor Wole Soyinka is not bigot, and has never been, he was the fiercest critic of Obasanjo when he was president and both of them are from Ogun state. He was imprisoned because of his support for the Igbos during the Biafra war, he almost lost his life. His classic 'The Man Died' is his prison diary. Soyinka stands for JUSTICE. Even after his strongly worded denial, some Igbos were still throwing insults.

  32. Oya where are all the Sh1theads who were lambasting Soyinka??? Have you all confirmed your Moron Levels?? I am an Igbo Man and i knew there was no way on earth that Soyinka said that nonesense. Soyinka is a man I respect so much. Initially i was disappointed but I said "No I have to see a video of him saying that before I can judge him. But until that I don't think he said that". We have to stop letting ourselves be divided along tribal, religious and ethnic sentimental lines. Before I became Igbo, I was first Human and that is how I see everyone First before i start considering their ethnicity and tribe.

    1. Bless your noble heart. If everyone was like you, there wouldn't be war or clashes. Peoplefforget that we are humans first. Before becoming Christians, Muslims, igbos, yorubas, hausas we are first human and being human supersedes any other thing we become therefore we should first behave humanly when confronted with issues such as this. The way the insults were pouring it was pathetic.

  34. It is so unfair when people take advantage of a debilitating situation. Upon all we have done as a nation to show the igbos that we are still family, some people will just pick one random popular yoruba man (with the exception of that immature oba of Lagos) and say he insulted igbos. It is so not fair! Thank God Wole Soyinka had the courage to speak out and say he didn't insult igbos. If he had kept quiet, everyone would have believed the media like we usually do.

    1. The guilty party here is the website that carried the news. Are you trying to say that Igbos conspired to plant the story on the cable news, just so that they can insult a Yoruba man? And please whst do you mean by we as a nation?
