Photo: Woman bites employees ear over salary in Lagos

An Ejigbo Magistrate court has ordered the arrest of a 38-year-old woman, Mrs Mary Joan Adeiekwe for biting off the ear of her employee, Nkemakolam Chinwendu (above) at her hotel in Lagos.

According to PM News, the victim Nkemakolam, a graduate of Business Administration from the Lagos State Polythecnic LASPOTECH was recruited as a manager in Mrs Adeiekwe's hotel located at 38 Olusesi Street in Ikotun, Lagos some months back and was placed on a salary of N25,000.

She worked in the establishment for some months without pay and was fired unexpectedly by her boss. She was however given a specific date to come for her salary arrears. Nkemakolam said when she went to see her former boss for her salary, she got angry and engaged her in a fight and in the process bit off her ear.

She was taken to the Igando General Hospital with the piece of ear that fell off but before they reached the hospital the piece of ear was already dead and doctors said it could not be stitched back.

The matter was reported to the Ikotun Police Division and Mrs Adeiekwe was arrested and charged with three-count charge of felony, assault and wounding under the Criminal Code. She was however granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

The matter suffered several adjournments because Adeiekwe refused to show up for trial. When the matter came up again on Monday May 4th, Adeiekwe did not show up and her counsel informed the court that they want to settle the matter out of court by paying the victim N25,000 being her salary and medical bills.

The presiding magistrate, Mr M.B Folami insisted that the defendant must appear in court and explain why she won’t face trial. The matter was adjourned till 1 June, 2015.

  30. She must be mentally deranged! The time for settling outta court is over. She should head to court and settle it there. Mean employers, they'll employ one and be exploiting the person without pay. Judgement day don come for you. Witch!

    1. If this woman is not dealt with, you can be sure she will do it again & others like her, around whom poor people are not safe. When a graduate takes up a N25000 managerial job, you need no soothsayer to know that she is poor. If employment can't help her situation, let it not worsen it. Human right activists, please see to it that justice is served in this case.

  32. So 25,000 naira is what graduates receives as salary in Nigeria? And I sends more than 2500 euros every month to people who call themselves friends and relatives, who don't even appreciate it, cos to them they think that money grows on trees in Europe, and we do nothing but to freely pluck them!.

  33. I actually understand the anger that led to this, no, I am not condoning her actions.

The woman is employed at a low rate, then not paid for her labours which seems to be a problem in Nigerian labour culture, then gets fired without cause, then told to come back for her check which is another out of pocket expense, which in truth she should have been paid up on the day of being fired. So, it was a whole lot of frustration that built up and she lashed out. Again, I am not saying what she did was right, far from it and she should face the full consequences of her actions.

Employers need to be conscious about not frustrating their employees, pay wages on time and pay up the person on the spot if they are fired, don't have them have to find bus fare to come in for a check.
