Lagos Govt to provide Wi-Fi services for residents (in parks only)

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos state Ministry of Information Communication Technology, ICT, Mrs Nike Animashaun, has revealed plans by the state government to provide Wi-Fi services to residents of the state. Speaking at the state ministerial briefing in Alausa recently, Mrs Animashaun said the first phase of the Wi-Fi connectivity would be installed in parks within the state. She listed the first parks to benefit from the WiFi installment as Oshodi, Alausa and Ajegunle parks.
“The Wi-Fi services will be in some of the parks in the state and when it is deployed, residents of Lagos State would be able to access Wi-Fi in some of the parks,” she said
But who goes to these parks? Mrs Animashaun said that the state government came up with the idea to stimulate and encourage the interest of children in science and technology. She however did not state if the Wi-Fi connection will be free of charge.

  51. Is this supposed to be a joke or what?

Only homeless people waste away in public parks.

The free wi if should be at schools, universities, halls of residence, hospitals, public libraries, public buildings, government buildings, town centres, shopping malls, main bus terminals, government owned trains and buses, etc.

  57. Using public wireless isn't safe because your system can hacked

  58. Pls build good markets and good market toilets +roads instead of trying to syphoon money through provision of wireless

  59. internet connectivity is an idea of the world. so no biggie.

WiFi connectivity in parks in ajegunle, agege and others will not add any value, neither will it make people go to the parks (the parts are usually under locks and key anyway: muri okunola park at ozumba mbadiwe law school round about and oshodi are always locked!)

The fall out of the 'initiative' is this: hardly do you have any phone user these days that does not have one data bundle or the other on their mobile devises so WiFi connection in park is not a 'wao' or novel idea. even as a complementary idea its just 'there'

rather, can't the ministry use this money to accelerate more internet connectivity in public schools, this way young people get values added education and there's fastness to the state's seemingly slow effort in bridging digital divide with the young population of lagos state.

  60. Nice one but i think this is Jimmy Agbaje's idea.

  61. I know 'news' releases are paid for on Linda Ikeji's blog so l want to assume that the headline @Lagos Govt to provide WiFi services to resident (in parks only) is paid for so as to 'go extra mile'.....so you think Lagos is providing WiFi to residents of Lagos State......meanwhile its only to those resident who visit parks.

Or what would have be wrong to just write '@Lagos Govt to provide WiFi services in Parks!

This Ministry should first of all do more in getting people to visit this so call 'zoos'...sorry parks first! Are the parks open sef?

    First thing first.

  63. Very funny indeed..lolz...why not free WiFi in schools? Don't call tht "Lagos Residents" shit..im sure u mean parks on the Island too....we said the Lagos state Govt.under d APC has run out of ideas..they saw it as Shade but we meant Change...WiFi in parks with prolly d worst network access and capabilities are here and our kids r supposed to improve their abilities in science and technology by tht.."Welldone"...BS

  64. Linda,

Please Let Lagos state/Ambode convert Oshodi park to the above (link)very simple water park for real Saturday/Sunday relaxation. Let them do just one and see.

What do l want to go and do after church on a hot sunday afternoon...? go spread myself for park with no shade and with brt's and danfos honing back and forth?

Lagos state parks as it is presently cant relax anyone. Putting wiFi access there is noting. Let this Ministry people be more creative.!

  65. Agbaje's campaign promise, i thought APC said it was a silly initiative. I hope for you to use the wifi, you have to register and probably pay a little token so that it would be sustainable.

  67. I RECIEVE THIS NEWS WITH MIXED FEELINGS. I WENT TO A PARK IN LAGOS STATE(ANTHONY VILLAGE ROUNDABOUT-ILUPEJU SIDE) SOME MONTHS AGO TRYING TO ENJOY THE SCENERY, TAKE PHOTOS AND ALL THAT. 3 POLICEMEN APPROACHED ME IMMEDIATELY AND ASKED ME TO LEAVE BECAUSE THEY WERE WORRIED I'M A SPY.

THIS WI-FI WOULD BENEFIT SCHOOLS BETTER, INSTEAD OF WI-FI IN SO CALLED PARKS THAT HACKERS AND YAHOO BOYS WILL USE ANONYMOUSLY TO WREAK HAVOC.

ALSO, THIS LIMITED INTERNET DOWNLOAD IN NIGERIA IS THE BIGGEST SCAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.
