Lagos government shuts 24 religious buildings over noise pollution

Lagos state government says in the last one year it has shut down 24 religious buildings in the state following complaints of noise pollution they produce in areas where they are situated as well as their non adherence to the state guidelines on noise pollution.

Lagos state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello pictured left above disclosed this at the 2015 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja yesterday April 29th
“We received over 1, 000 petitions in the year under review. But we have been able to resolve some and some have relocated. We have shut about 24 religious outfits in the last one year because they failed to adhere to the state guidelines on noise pollution.”he said

    1. The clubs have soundproof systems in place.Don't be an illiterate.

The churches and mosques were asked to either have a soundproof system or relocate their loudspeakers inward. The government took this decision because residents filed complaints.

  24. Nice one, I've seen an old couple who developed High Blood Pressure because they couldn't sleep at night in their own duplex because the church beside them always had one night program or the other. One of the sons came to visit with the kids during hols, noticed the trend and dragged the church to court and it stopped. So Insensitive. They should be a Church Road or sth where all the churches should be located.

  36. My area has the highest incidence of noise pollution in Lagos State. The Lagos Homs Estate A.K.A Chief Anthony Enahoro estate at Sogunro in Ogba is surrounded by 4 mosques, and several bar drinking joints. The mosques have external loudspeakers outside. The call to prayer begins daily at 4.30am till 6 am. Monday to Sundays. Sundays are my worst days because u can't get any rest. The Sunday service is aired from 9 am till 2pm via these loudspeakers.

Now to the bar joints, the loud music starts blasting from 6pm in the evening till between 12 midnight and 2 am. Thursdays to Sunday are the peak periods. My health has greatly deteriorated since I moved into this estate and my monthly period has been erratic due to lack of adequate sleep.

To make matters worse , Lagos State did not allow us bring our personal generators for safety reasons neither have they provided us with a generator to power the estate.

Residents have moved into this estate since August 2014. We are appealing to the state Govt, please wipe out the noise pollution. The bar joints and mosques should be given the riot act! Residents have had to call the toll emergency lines on terrible nights when the music is way too loud and no light so u can close ur windows.

Also we ardently pray for a Generator that can power the estate. We bought these apartments from the Govt and they did not come cheap.

We pay our mortgages and we look after the estate well. We all had generators in the places we were living b4 we moved into Lagos Homs.

Electricity is a necessity and not a luxury dear Governor.
Linda, I once emailed u on this issue but u never aired it on ur blog.

I pray for something positive. We wives are not having it easy. We throw away food ever day from the freezer.

    Thank you and God bless.
    A pained wife, mother.

  37. @Anon 6:42, I believe you live in town. I thought so too, until I went visiting a friend at Nyanya and spent the night there. One woman woke me up as early as 4:30am with gosple songs. She followed it up with a sermon, all along raising her voice over the mic. The Mosque close by took over shortly. Europeans and Arabs have really done great damage with their exploitative religions.
