UK jewellers refused to sell watch to Samuel Eto’o because of 'some Nigerians who came in the other day with fake credit cards'

Oh no! Nigerians, why? Why? Former African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto'o claimed today March 12ththat he tried to buy an expensive watch in a west London Jewellers but was refused by the sales rep because some Nigerians had come into the store the other day with fake credit cards.

Eto’o, who is worth over $100million, said he'd gone into the store with his brother to buy a £10,000 watch, but said the shop assistant looked at them suspiciously and reluctantly allowed them to view the watches. Continue, it gets more interesting!

“I went to go buy a watch at a jewellers, not too far from my house. The watch I wanted to see was expensive. I asked the saleswoman - who was also black - ‘Could you show me that watch please?’ First, I saw her turn to her co-workers like, ‘Uh, what should I do?’ Eventually, she let me see the watch. I looked at it and said, ‘OK, I’ll buy it.’ I took out my credit card and when she went to go run it through the machine, she came back and said it was declined.”
Eto'o, who is the 7th-richest footballer currently playing, said he asked her:
“Was it declined or did you not want it to be accepted?”
He told CNN:
“My brother asked, ‘What’s going on?’ And she said, ‘Nothing, nothing.’ But he said, ‘No, because when I came in, I saw how all of you were looking at us ... My brother can afford this and the way you’re treating him shows that you think just because he’s black, he can’t afford this watch.'
“The woman then slipped up and said, ‘No, it’s just that we had some Nigerians in the store the other day who came in with fake credit cards. I don’t know if you can imagine the weight of what she said. If one of my own makes a mistake, they judge us all. I don’t think she’s a racist person, but she stereotyped all black people as ‘those people’.”

    2. #smh - I'm a Nigerian and my Chase card was blocked because another Nigerian cloned it in Malaysia. I have never been to Malaysia.

#smh - We all voted him as fresh air and he gave us the most polluted air ever. Why isn't he running as a more fresh air???

#Buhari is the closest to handing over to fresh air. At least he will sanitise the system and hand over in a few years. With PDP even if if they bring a nursery school child they will pollute him to give us foul air.

  35. No Linda, you shouldn't say that. How can we verify that they are Nigerians.?

A majority of white people believe that all black people are from Nigeria. We are big spenders and Nigeria is about the only country that gets a constant mention abroad.yes at times, the stories aren't flattering but there are a lot of positive things going on that they forget to mention. They really don't consider SA as an African country cos of its predominately white citizens in certain parts.

When I'm shopping, and I don't really look Nigerian but definitely African, but because I'm flashing cash or paying a large bill with my card(not a Nigerian bank),I hear "you must be Nigerian".

In this instance, except the shop in question can release verifiable documented evidence,I'll stand by my country.

  49. Cee, what makes her a racist? Because she's black? Hehe. Meanwhile, how did they know they were Nigerians? Well, all blacks who don't have their accent are Nigerians. And, she considered Eto to be a Nigerian. And she told him that his countrymen played a fast one. So, if Eto had duped her, he would have been one more Nigerian. We put ourselves in this. After all, an upright person is a fool to most of us.

  50. Of course they would say that and for the record Asians and Eastern Europeans are kings at the Credit Card game but keep a low profile after a hit!!
That's Black for you in the UK always hating on 9jas swag... undeniably they are some bad eggs but do you know....how many high flying 9ja Professionals and Sportsmen we have in the UK..Nigerians are a big threat and we get slagged just because of our success and confidence...
Remember Oprah got this in Paris and Switzerland...typical excuse to demean a successful black person...does Eto have to announce who he is for them to accord him the proper respect...lucky it wasn't me...would have so tongue lashed them...got no time for all that rubbish typecasting...

    1. I was just about to say this, it happened to Oprah Winfrey when she went to Paris for Tina Turner's wedding. Nigerians are spectacular people in as much as we have some bad eggs which is nothing when compared to Asians and other races. It's just a stereotype thing. Eto on his part was not suppose to be specific, if it were to be his country, he would have been silent besides, that was just a scared sales person

  54. Nigerians always showing themselves abroad. That was how a friend's flatmate in the UK took a loan of 800pounds only to use it to buy stuff to return to nigeria with. When the time for payback came, the guy had already disappeared. You go fear letters sent to their apartment regards the loan.
Another case was a nigerian who cleared Marks&Spencer till in one of their Aberdeen stores. So many ill stories that make getting a job as a nigerian more challenging in the UK. Its really disgraceful.

  61. my question is, how did the woman know that the Africans were Nigerians? When a credit card is declined, you would not be interrogated. You will only be told that your card has been declined and off you go. Hence, how did they know that they were Nigerians? By the way, what is Etoo doing with 10000 British pounds wrist watch?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Don't blame them...

    ReplyDelete
  63. And this is why I don't really pity Nigerians when they are caught, jailed or killed for committing crimes abroad, because they continue to ruin the image of the country and ruin the chances of not only other Nigerians but other Africans too!

Even in canada, you enter a store the sale rep will be looking at you as if you came to steal. one day one told me they dont do refund because you guys buy dresses for an event then return it the next day. then I said: Hey Sales girl, I will pay your bills till you get a better job. Dont you ever stereotype me or any black.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Now Linda observe this. Nigerians are not the only black people on earth and as such i refuse to believe we are the only ones committing fraud in foreign lands, i mean even when a man from Easter island or an Aborigine from Australia commits fraud, he is said to be Nigerian. personally i have had experiences of English speaking Cameroonians referred to as Nigerians sake of say they where found with Nigerian passports. In the whole of Cyprus, all black people are considered to be Nigerians even my very good friend who is from Britain calls all black people he meets in Cyprus Nigerians. So you see, we mustn't accept that labeling, as majority of Nigerians are hard working stand up honest citizens and i will not be a party to accepting blame for other peoples antecedents.
