Pope Francis: there are limits to freedom of expression

On a plane from Sri Lanka to the Philippines today, the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis talked about the recent Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris. While defending freedom of expression saying its a fundamental human right, he also said ‘you cannot insult the faith of others’
"One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith. There is a limit. Every religion has its dignity...in freedom of expression there are limits.”
He gestured to a friend and said “If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch. It’s normal. It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”

    3. No. But it is enough to get you punched. Read btw the lines, he didn't say it's okay to kill. We all need a little bit of common sense in this life

    4. It's reasonable to respect other people's religion and not insult other people's faith. When I insult your religion I provoke you, provocation can lead to violence but the truth is Violence is never the answer. "FOLLOW PEACE WITH ALL MEN"

    5. C'mn all the pope is saying is that there is a limit to sensitive things like this,if you use a curse word,im most likely to retaliate but not killing....they went too far by killing but then again know your limits.....segun put it the way he understood it.

    1. It's right to bridle one's tongue. But if people say things they are not supposed to say. Does that mean they should be killed? Killing or taking another life doesn't n will Never justify it. How many times have people said or do things against our CREATOR, and He watches us in Heaven. Let the God of justice always fight for those who blasphem. N not to take a soul. I am not in support of what they did though. But there are other punishment instead of taking ones LIFE.

  79. I humbly disagree with the Pontiff. Freedom of speech as an Art should have no limit unless it goes contrary to the Law of the Land or Society. We exist as a country base on agreement entered (Social Contract) to abide by certain norms, rules and regulations which if broken will attract sanctions. The law of the land should be superior to any law an individual or group within the system are tryin to generate for their own selfish purpose. This is the only antidote to anarchy. We must learn to be tolerant n our actions should be guided by laws. If you feel offended by anybody's action, the Court is there for you to seek redress.

Pope Francis was human before he became pope and it's human to react when someone insults you, it's only divine intervention and your belief in God that will make you not react violently. With a lil common sense, anybody can correctly understand what that pope said. I pray for such wisdom as Francis's.

  86. I do not totally agree with Pope,
Before you judge me please note I'm a Christian.
I do not understand why men should kill in the name of religion. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and many more. It is absolutely ridiculous that we should kill in the name GOD who is supreme and can take care of himself. Whatever the provocation is , why take it personal and act on His behalf. Unless he is no God, he should be able to avenge/forgive wrongs.
I believe religion is about submitting to higher authority, if this Authority can't balance wrongs or bring peace then is no authority and does not DESERVE to be worshiped. If this Authority, All powerful and Mighty, needs me to kill to bring balance or avenge wrongs. Then is better I fend for myself because I'm the AUTHORITY.
I understand there may be spiritual gains on following the rules or teachings of these POWERS.
But hey! I'm a Man not a spirit. Oh Yeah what about Faith! Sure is a beautiful thing but at least we have senses to reason.
Let me say this? if you kill for disdain or blasphemy or any reason for any GOD. I do not think that God is an Authority or all powerful anymore. I think you are because I fear not the god but YOU.
Let me take you further, most of you will probably criticize this write up, what if I tell you this WRITE UP is my God and I see any kind of negative view as disdain or blasphemy to my GOD and I will probably kill you for it. Will you see me as insane?
My point here is there will be no one left to worship our GOD if we all go after one another because of differences in Opinion and expression.
Maybe the world will be a better place if we do. After-all they don't need us, it is we that need Them.

Let me borrow part of a speech

    After all:
"What manner of men are we then, if we do not have our reason, We are all no better than beasts in a jungle if that were the case. But we have reason, we can reason with each other and we can reason with ourselves."

    Adiós.

  89. No justification for sheding human blood, these radicals are the 8oko haram in Nigeria, ISiL in Iraq, Al shabab in Kenya, Al Quaeda in Afghanistan e.t.c lashing out large scale horror on innocent civillians, only a handicapped God will ask his followers to fight him instead of him fighting for his followers

Yes to bridle one's tongue is right. But does that justify to even kill? Can't punishment be given. Instead of taking the life of another? Oh. It's wickedness.

  95. Dis is sooooooo true. All of u sayin dat he is advocating for ' an eye for an eye', read his message again nd if u r still confused read d whole message nt jst dis bit buh d whole thing. One shudnt say things ( gud or bad) and nt expect a reaction ( gud or bad too) buh dat also doesn't make d reaction rite or wrong. The Bible tells us to tolerate buh we shud also nt test odas. D Bible even says that we shud nt put the Lord God to d test. So don't say something that will most likely lead to a bad reaction nd expect d oda to keep quiet. Act accordingly nd speek accordingly. Christians, Muslims, Jews, and oda religious pple let us watch our tongues nd let peace reign. All our comments are reactions to his statement buh nt all of dem were typed by pple who knw wot COMMON SENSE is.

  97. The pope is intelligent....he condemns the killings....but teaches that u should learn to 'expect' reactions when you cross the line...esp when dealing with people whom you already kno their likely reaction(or some of the people)...he is cautioning us esp christians and atheists plus d rest....u kno a lion will kill u and u still get close and pull itz tail?????....just cos u think its an animal and you have a right to pull its tail??? Then u should know what ti expect u 'tail puller'....he actually condemned the killings...read it up...'expect a punch' means people will get provoked...thank u.
