Sad news! Prof. Dora Akunyili has passed on

We've heard rumours of her death a few times before but unfortunately this time it's for real. Former Director General of NAFDAC and former Minister of Information Prof. Dora Akunyili has died. She died 10am today june 7th at the Indian hospital where she was taken to on May 11 to receive medical treatment after her health deteriorated.

Various reliable sources have confirmed her passing. She was only 59. So sad! May her soul rest in peace, Amen.

After 18years together, Melanie Griffith files for divorce from Antonio Banderas

Awww, was rooting for these two. According TMZ, after 18 years together, actress Melanie Griffith, 56, has filed for divorce from Antonio Banderas, 53, citing irreconcilable differences. Sources tell TMZ the split is 'amicable.' 

Melanie and Antonio married on May 14, 1996. They have a daughter, Stella del Carmen Banderas, born on September 24, 1996. This will be Melanie's fourth divorce: she was twice married to Don Johnson and also married to Steve Bauer. It's Banderas' second divorce.

Superstar artistes and nominees landed in Durban, South Africa this morning to be a part of the fourth edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards. 

International artistes and MAMA performers, Miguel, Trey Songz, French Montana and beau, Khloe Kardashian and Marlon Wayans were also spotted at the airport.

Nigerian nominees including Don Jazzy, Davido, Flavour, Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, Phyno, Clarence Peters also arrived in the early hours of today.

I'm engaged to a man who has dated at least six of my friends. I've lived abroad since I was 16 and only returned to Nigeria last year. Apparently he's one of hottest bachelors on the Island and has been around and slept with a lot of these women. It was after we got engaged that I started to find out about all his exes. Some of them even made sure to tell me about their past tryst with him.

I'm worried that the man I am about to marry has slept with a lot of my friends. I don't know how to handle it or handle the girls. Anytime we are all together, it's always awkward or the girls act too familiar with him. It leaves me very uncomfortable. What should I do? I am definitely going ahead with the wedding, I just don't know how to handle the situation. Please advice.

Soldiers confiscate today's edition of The Nation and Leadership newspapers

Going by tweets on the timeline of the Nation newspapers and a report on their site, military men this morning stormed the office of the Nation newspapers in Benin City and Warri and confiscated their publication for today. The soldiers from the 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army at Okwuokoko, Delta State seized a van conveying the day’s newspapers to Warri and Benin City.

 

According to the newspaper, a source close to the soldiers said they are acting on orders from above.  Continue...

Days after signing deal with Apple, Dr Dre buys new house for $40m

Dr Dre is reported to have dropped a whooping $40million to buy the mega mansion of supermodel Gisele Bundchen and her quarterback husband, Tom Brady in Brentwood, California.

 

Dre, who recently signed a $3billion deal with Apple for his Beats Electronic company was the highest bidder for the house which has been on the market for about three months now.

The mansion, which is Eco-friendly, is made of two estates that collectively has 8 bedrooms, six garages and a moat. The main house alone is on almost 14,000 square feet with six bedrooms and nine bathrooms. It also has a professional grade home gym, an infinity pool, a waterfall and a motor court. UNILAG students protest hike in registration fee, shut down campus

There's a protest currently going on at the University of Lagos. Students are protesting UNILAG authority demanding that some students pay N20,000 for late editing or registration of Course Forms.

The students first converged at the University's Senate Building where they shouted slogans and sang protest songs, demanding that the school ends this form of exploitation today, while accusing their VC of corruption. They left the senate building and went on a rampage through all the faculties in UNILAG demanding their rights.

The students then blocked entrances to the school, preventing cars from going in and out of the campus.

The students claim they registered late because the school management shut the school portal against registration, only for the school to demand an extra N20,000 from students registering late. The police are currently there to calm things down.

Nigerian women now sell their wombs, breast, private parts for money - Catholic Bishop

While delivering his paper yesterday June 5 at the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Abuja, President of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama said that the global Bio-tech market where people sell their body parts; vagina, womb, ovaries in exchange for money, has penetrated into Nigeria and that some Nigerian women are now targets of those behind this business.

 

According to him, this market is being handled by businessmen in partnership with some members of the National Assembly.

"Some scientists and dubious businessmen use members of the National Assembly to gain legal access to the wombs and ovaries of women and young girls. It is becoming increasingly clear to us that even in Nigeria, our women have become the targets of all manners of intrigues, especially as their fertility is concerned. Personal private parts of women, ranging from wombs, ovaries and human eggs risk being put up as commodities for sale at the global biotechnology market-places.” he said

Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, dies at 83

One of Nigeria’s most prominent traditional rulers, Ado Abdullahi Bayero, the Emir of Kano has died. The Emir died early today June 6th in Kano according to family sources.

Ado Bayero has been the Emir of Kano since 1963 and was a former ambassador to Senegal. May his soul rest in peace...amen.

Because she easily gets impressed and she hasn't been around like me; food-wise. In my opinion the best grilled chicken I have ever had was at the Las Olas Grill in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  And in Abuja no grilled chicken beats Yahuza's' chicken suya or the Asokoro joint.  However, my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to find out for myself. Students of the Lagos State University (LASU) yesterday Thursday June 5th took their protest to the Lagos State Government House in Alausa ,Ikeja, where they barricaded the main entrance with their buses and remained there for hours. When they got hungry, they turned brought out their big pots, ingredients, firewood, made a fire and prepared a meal right there in front of the Government House gate. No time! Lol. The students prepared beans and ate it with bread.

The students are protesting the recent hike in their school fees, and asking Lagos State governor to intervene on their behalf. They vowed to remain at the scene until they got a positive response from the governor. The Gwoza Christian Community Association in Borno State has released details of disturbing disclosures made by six Christian girls who were abducted in 2013 by the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

The girls were abducted last year from different locations in Gwoza local government area. Their statements revealed that, following their abduction, they were subjected to serial rapes by Boko Haram terrorists. Brother of Sudanese woman says she should be executed if she refuses to denounce Christianity

Some of you might not know this, but the Sudanese woman, Meriam Ibrahim being held in prison and sentenced to death for abandoning her for Islamic faith for Christianity, was actually turned in to the authorities by her own family members.

Her older brother (pictured above) spoke with CNN today and said if she refuses to convert back to Islam, she should be executed. The things written on the photos are his exact words. See more after the cut...

Photos: Governor's private residence in Gombe State bombed

The private residence of governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dakwambo, around the GRA/Pantami area of the state was bombed this evening. Sources say the bomb exploded from one of the Police Armored Personnel Carrier (armour tanks) stationed in front of the governor's house. This is not the government state residence but the private residence of the governor which also serves as his official residence.

No fatalities has been reported so far.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has appointed Professor Rufa’i Alkali as his new Special Adviser on Political Affairs.

Professor Alkali, a Political Scientist, once served as National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and was appointed Pro-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna last year. He hails from Gombe State.

The President has also appointed Hajia Baraka Sani as his Senior Special Assistant for Schools’ Agriculture Programme. Hajia Sani was until recently, the Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture. Both appointments are with immediate effect.
