Boko Haram attacks: Atiku holds press conference, says situation is grave

Former VP Atiku Abubakar who is from Adamawa state, one of the worst hit by Boko Haram, held a press conference today November 3rd at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja where he addressed the attacks of the sect members on Mubi and other towns in northern Nigeria. Atiku described the current situation as grave and appealed to the international community to come to Nigeria's aid. Full text of his speech after the cut...

Gentlemen of the Press:
It is with deep regret that I came to learn that Mubi, which is one the largest towns in Adamawa State of northeast Nigeria, has been taken by the terrorist group commonly known as Boko Haram.  As you may know, in recent weeks and months, Mubi has been a town to which displaced persons from further north have fled for safety after their communities fell to Boko Haram.  As I speak, the inhabitants of Mubi, together with those who went there for safety, find themselves at the mercy of this terrorist group.
I am Nigerian.  I believe in the integrity of Nigeria as a whole, and every part of this country matters to me.  But I was born and bred in the northeast.  So, please, excuse me if I should say a few words about the part of the country where I am from, about what the people from the northeast of Nigeria have had to suffer for far, far too long.
Things should never have got to this stage.  Thousands of Nigerians have had to flee their homes.  Their houses and farms have been destroyed.  They do not know where to go or how to restart their lives.  That is the degree to which we have come in this country. I say this with reluctance and with shame.  The situation in which we find ourselves today is grave.  Much of Borno, and the north of Adamawa and Yobe states is already at the mercy of the terrorists.  It started a few months ago with Bama, which is nearly 400 kilometres from Yola, capital of Adamawa State.
The next major town to be taken by terrorists was Gwoza, where a terrorist caliphate flag has long been hoisted.  Smaller towns near Gwoza such as Pulka and Limankra are equally not free.  Next was Madagali.  The town is still being occupied.  Then fell Gulak.  Next was Michika, then Bazza.  Next was the twin town of Uba which is half Adamawa and half Bornu.  Its neighboring town of Lassa was also overrun.  Uba was the latest town captured before the terrorists trampled on Mubi.  People from these troubled areas are now pouring into Yola for safety.
As somebody who hails from Adamawa State, you can appreciate why I feel such emotion at the fate of my people.    For whatever reason, our defence forces are unable to cope and unable to defend. My sympathies go out to the soldiers who find themselves in a situation not of their making.  This is a crisis of leadership.
We were told that the budget for security was going to be enlarged so that the security agencies and military would be in a better position to tackle the insurgency.  How is it possible that a great nation like Nigeria should find itself in a situation where a handful of terrorists is able to invade a town as large as Mubi with a population of about 300,000? How were the insurgents able to so easily take a town of this size, and the people find themselves defenseless and undefended?  How is it that the people have been made to suffer as they have?
I have previously spoken about the deteriorating security situation in this country on a number of occasions. On those occasions I deliberately restrained myself from speaking in a manner that might be construed as distracting the government and the security forces as they grappled with the dire security situation.  But the scale of injustice the people of Nigeria are suffering has reached a stage where I am obliged to amplify my concerns.
Many of our citizens, unable to come to terms with why a so-called “Africa’s best army” has been unable to confront this horrendous situation, are increasingly assuming that this whole thing is about electoral politics.  They suspect that the seeming inability of the government to end the crisis is a ploy to weaken some parts of the country ahead of the 2015 elections. Can we, in all honesty, blame them for having those suspicions?
I call upon the international community to help us.  I am making a special appeal to countries with sufficient knowhow and experience in tackling terrorism to increase their assistance to us.
The relief agencies that are already working here should please double their efforts. And all people of goodwill should help in any way they can and to do more than they have been doing to alleviate the pain and suffering that we Nigerians face through this insurgency.  At a time when we are constantly bombarded with horror stories of ugly events elsewhere in the world – here in West Africa, we are faced with the Ebola epidemic and other trouble spots – I draw your attention to a humanitarian crisis which is also a matter of international security.
This Boko Haram insurgency has been with us now for several years but has, in these last few days, taken a step further towards being a disaster of unimaginable proportions. Hundreds of thousands of people are at risk.  Nigeria needs the world’s support. The world must not abandon Nigerians in our time of need.
Thank you.

They should settle the matter between themselves or is GEJ preventing them? SMH 80% of soldiers enlisted into the Nigerian Army are from the north! Also, majority the military heads of state are also northern! The truth is very simple! It would take the NA less than 48hrs to end boko harma. The north are fully supporting them to weaken GEJ government. We knw the dat north owns nigeria's powers, but with democracy you can't steal power with guns if not, GEJ would have been long gone. The best way is to create this boko haram nonsense. To show the world that he can't rule Nigeria! SMH

If the northerners want to kill people why are they killing the northerners? Why not the southerners ? This is just mere logic.

BH claims western education is sin so why havent they attacked your university till date? Shows you guys knows what you are doing and stop talking about the Army. Everyone knows the Muslims within the army are the ones giving information to BH about the Armys efforts at fighting them hence BH seem to have the upper hand. Majority of the army officers killed thus far are only the Christian stock. Muslims in the army are majority of the deserters that fled to the camerouns.

  27. Please he should stop clowning. A child that says his mother shouldn't sleep, that child will not sleep too. When boko haram was an infant, what did the northern elders do? They were busy calling President GEJ name and busy planning for 2015. Now boko haram is all grown and out of control, he's asking for help. Mr. Atiku, with due respect, go and sit down. Political positions are more important than the citizens and you dirty and selfish politicians keep forgetting that without the citizens, you can't rule. In other countries, politicians set aside their political difference to handle the problems confronting their nations after which they can go back being political opponents. In Nigeria, it's fast way to make your opponent look incompetent. My dear, go sit with your fellow northern elders and come up with with solutions. You want the international community to help and you'll be the first to cry wolf when they uncover the truth behind it.

  31. Thank you Alhaji Atiku. There is something wrong with this country. Ihejirika was threatened by northern leaders to be dragged to ICC. He largely contained BH. Azazi was killed. Alhaji Atiku, the plain truth is that the religious and political leaders condoned BH for too long. They refused to speak out. They openly asked the Military to go. They never gave information. They harboured the enemy. They funded them through Zakkat and good will. Now see the effect. Innocent children and blood shed daily. Blame your selves not the government. Remember when niger delta boys were acting? Their elders condemned and fought againt them till amnesty from yaradua came. The army is finished because the citizens harboured enemy and they dont know who is who anymore. Badeh chief of defence staff should resign. He is from adamawa. Gusau and all his pomp should be sacked. Gej was a fool to have trusted that you could clean up your own house. If this can happen when a christian is in power what would happen when a muslim takes over? I am afraid.

As much as I am not Atiku's fan, I know for a fact that he loves his state. I once lived in Yola and Atiku has tried to better the life of people in that state whether directly or indirectly.

What he is saying is so true the situation is grave and calls for serious intervention.

MUBI is one of if not the biggest trading town in Adamawa and boosts the Polytechnic and is a bustling developed town for business within Nigeria and with our Cameroonian counterparts.

Its a serious issue that Boko haram has control of this town. I know for a fact that Atiku has no hand in Boko Haram. He has an international secondary school built to international standards and a private university which is same. He is very for education and development which Boko haram is against. So please let us tackle the problem of Boko haram decisively!!!

  61. NIGERIA IS A "PECULIAR MESS"

Peculiar mess (called penkelemesi by my Ibadan brothers in the First republic).
He who prepares an evil load will carry it upon his/her head. The Northern part of Nigeria encouraged Islamic fundamentalists now known as Boko Haram to serve as a tool to disturb whoever gets power from the Southern part of Nigeria. However, the mad dog has now come back to hunt its master.

Nigeria is made up of three distinct nations: North; West and East. We have NEVER blended and therefore, let there be a referendum within each of the three regions with a simple question of YES or NO (UK/ Scottish style) of whether each of them should remain in Nigeria. My own vote as a Yoruba man together with my entire household will be a big NO.

This will bring an end to the peculiar mess called Nigeria.

  65. SHEKAU EVIL MENTALITY VERSUS QUR’AN

Mr. Shekau released another video recently, I have gone through his speech and his claims are not only anti Islam but also very ridiculous for someone who claims to know the Quran. The following are his claims.....

    CLAIM 1:-
"“We have not made ceasefire with anyone… We
    did not negotiate with anyone… It’s a lie. It’s a
lie. We will not negotiate. “What is our business
with negotiation? Allah said we should not
    negotiate,” (SHEKAU)
    RESPONSE:-
    ALLAH SAYS:
": If they propose peace to you, accept it and trust in God. God is All-hearing and All-knowing” (Q 8:61)

    CLAIM 2:-
"The kidnapped girls, we have forced them to change to Islam, and they've leant 2 chapters of Quran already". (SHEKAU)
    RESPONSE:-
“Let there be no compulsion in religion...” (Q 2:256)

    CLAIM 3:-
"Which girls are they talking about, the Chibok girls; I told you I have married them off, and they have settled in their matrimonial home” (SHEKAU)
    RESPONSE:-
"Do not inherit women against their will" (Qur’an 4:19)

    CLAIM 4:-
"Our war is still on cause" what is the war....the war to make everyone Muslim”
    RESPONSE:-
“If it had been your Lord's will, all of the people on Earth would have believed [in one religion] …” (Q10:99)......
May Allah help us and protect us to the right path and may our final abode the jannatul firdause.

  70. dear friends, its high time we let go of our differences what ever they may be, religious, political, tribal etc.,and come together as one and unite against this ugly situation we have found ourselves in.
The primary objective of any government is to protect the life and property of its people,as such this government should rise up to its responsibility and do the needful, POSTERITY WILL TELL on our leaders who have so selfishly brought this nation to the pitiable state we have found ourselves. It is therefore left to us to take up our destinies in our hands and fight for that NIGERIA of our dreams, were our children can go to school without fear and intimidation, were our wives can go to the market without fear and were our men can go to work knowing their family is safe.Atiku has spoken well lets not bring political bias or sentiments into this that is the true situation of things in that place, people should for once sit down and reflect instead of jumping into hasty conclusions,we can say this because this guys have not got to this part of the country and not that they cant but for GOD who has been protecting us,its time everyone pulled up their sleeves and work towards a better NIGERIA.

YOUR VOTE IS YOUR POWER DON'T SELL IT.
    GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

  71. Very well said Atiku.
This is seriously not a job for you alone, I feel other northern elders needs to rise up and to take the bull by the horn because the Gej led administration has failed and are obviously not ready to do anything about the Islamic sect boko haram either because due to politics or lack of well power to do one's job as a leader.
In my opinion a CHANGE to this administration can do the magic. We need a true Nigeria leader not a sectional or regional leader like GEJ and some presidential aspirants we see today. #ANigeriaForAll..

  72. Can Atiku honestly come out and blame the present administration for the Army’s inability to combat boko Haram? When he was VP how much military hardware did that administration provide for the army, how many times were they trained in modern techniques of warfare? Oh! The recent increment in security budget will buy all the hardware, recruit all the personnel and train them? All in one day? GEJ must be a miracle worker (Hallelujah!!!) if you expect him to pull this off in a few months.
One day the truth behind boko haram will be revealed. For now look for other ways to garner political support.

  73. Hello Nigerians, if I may ask this question? What would we all do, if the truth come out that PDP and their leaders are the one using Boko Haram to kill in the name of politic. What would it be?
