Ebola: Catholic Church suspends ‘sign of peace’, Anglican primate suspends handshake

As the fear of the spread of Ebola sweeps across Nigeria, Catholic churches in Lagos have suspended the 'sign of peace' where the congregation shake hands during mass. While some Anglican churches have suspended handshakes during communion.

The Archbishop of Lagos Adewale Martins released a statement yesterday saying that while the handshakes have been suspended, Catholic priests should continue the traditional hand to mouth method of given Holy Communion for now, but asked the priest to make sure their hands don't touch the tongues of the recipient. He also said Holy Water bowls usually placed at the entrance of churches should be discontinued to contain the spread of the virus.

In the same vain, the Primate of the Church Of Nigeria Anglican Communion the Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh today suspended shaking of hands during the exchange of the peace. He also suspended the age long mouth method of administering communion. He said this is aimed at preventing the spread of the disease through physical contact.

    2. This people are just practicing religion not Faith, and without Faith it is impossible to please GOD. If the so called holy water is really holy, disease can not come near it. If u know what a Holy communion is, u will not say this. Holy communion is the blood and body of Christ, and no disease can survive in it. Even if u came with any disease and u take the communion by faith, it will terminate the disease. if we truly believe in God, we should give HIM our undivided attention, and trust every thing HE says totally. This life is more of spiritual than physical. As Christians non of these disease can come near us. If JESUS were to be on earth at this period,HE will lay hand on any ebola victim and cast out the disease, and as His children we can do even more miracle than HE did while on earth. Greater is HE that is in us (christians born again) than he that is in the world. In my church we still shake hands, hug, take communion, and every other thing we do in our church meetings, we can't change it because of anything, we can't chang the things of the SPIRIT because of the things of the world. We are not of this world. We don't talk fear, failure, sickness or poverty, we only talk health, wealth, successes and faith. Fear is the devils tools to get at people but FAITH is the christians tools to live in success. Evang. Dan

    4. @daddyswife, our church operates in borno and other northern states, we are making great impact there. But am not trying to say people should not be careful in deling with things, all am saying is if we say we believe in God we should believe HIM totally and everything HE says. Sickness or diseases doesn't belong to us. fear is satans tool to get at people. As a child of God we are not suppose to be sick, because we have a divine nature, but satan can use fear to still that from a believer. Greater is HE that is in us * evang. dan

If we truly know God and who we are as Christians, we will not allow any thing come between us and our faith. Its only a canal man that can be so curiously minded with the things of this world.

Holy communion is the blood and body of Christ, and no disease can survive in it. Even if u came with any disease and u take the communion by faith, it will terminate the disease immediately. there are so many christians who do not have faith, and this is so bad, that it can hinder the person from making Heaven. if we truly believe in God, we should give HIM our undivided attention, and trust every thing HE says totally. 1. @Robert, God is greater than Ebola.

Its a good decision the Church has made.
Meanwhile, let's continue to pray for ourselves, our families and Nigeria as a whole for God's mercy in this time of trial. We should also keep to the preventive method of washing our hands with soap and water frequently.
      God is with us.

  18. The government should quarantine the immigration officers and airport officials that must have had contact with Liberia man at the point of entry Nigeria, is very important. This immigration officers and airport officials definitely did check on his international passport and travel documents, I believe customs and other airport officials must have check his luggage. This is very important. Airport officials may like carry the virus ebola and start spreading to others coming into Nigeria, and to friends and family or anyone they had contact with. because by law, you must submit your travel documents and by law officials must check your luggage. Let us pray and also learn to stop the spread of this deadly epidemic called ebola. We shall win this fight.

  36. Nigerians are so so ignorant and superstitious. Nobody with the virus would be strong enough to go to church. He/she would most likely be lying comatose somewhere. Anyway I am not surprised cos the most ignorant and superstitious peeps I know are churchgoers with their silly beliefs in witches, devils, satan, etc.

  38. From my own point of view am thinking that this is a plague from God. Therefore It is time to seek His face because the world has sinned and has fallen shot of His glory. Imagine a world where all sorts of immortality and abominations thrives and we Africans are emulating it in the name of civilisation. Imagine a world where they legalised gay marriages and some of our African leaders supported while some are still clamouring for it. We forgot so soon why Sodom and Gomorah was destroyed. In the bible whenever the God's people is going contrary to His commandments, he normally punish them by sending a plague to destroy them until they repent from their sin and ask for mercy.
So my brethren, if you think deep about this Ebola virus that has no cure yet and remember the stories in the bible, you will agree with me that no amount of salt bath, personal hygiene or carefulness will keep you away from contacting this deadly virus ..
It is time to repent from our sins and seek His face for His mercies endureth forever. ..
only if our leaders will understand.
    Good morning Africa !!!

  41. Then they should stop giving holy communion then, since its the priest that can put the communion in their mouth n his hand mustn't touch their tongue, how sure are they that the hand the priest used in picking the bread is not infected? so, na the priest holy pass sey? Its only God that can save.

  42. "Mama P" was right when she said " all diz tins u people are shearing...diaris God ooo" its only God that can save us in this misfortune. If not how else can a human leave without having a body contact with another fellow human. These are indeed signs. Maybe our sins are now too high and great for forgiveness hence this dreaded virus. May God have mercy on us all
