Confab endorses creation of Ijebu, Aba, 16 other states, proposes Presidency rotation

Members of the ongoing National Conference holding in Abuja yesterday July 3rd while deliberating on the report of the committee on political restructuring and forms of Government in Nigeria, endorsed the creation of 18 new states to add to the existing 36 states. They also endorsed the rotation of the Presidency between the North and South and other Geo-political zones in the country.

The members suggested the creation of a state for the South-East geopolitical zone which has only 5 states in order to bring the number to 6 which is the number of states of other zones, apart from the North -West, which has seven. Continue...

Some of the proposed states approved by the Confab are Apa from Benue State, Kainji from Kebbi, Katagum from Bauchi, Savannah from Borno, Amana from Adamawa, Gurara from Kaduna, Ghari from Kano, Etiti from South East, Aba from Abia, Adada from Enugu, Njaba-Anim from Anambra and Imo,  Anioma from Delta State, Orashi from Rivers State, Ogoja from Cross River State, IJebu from Ogun State and New Oyo State from the present Oyo State.

The Conference is to later determine the names of the remaining two other states and their capitals, which are to be created in the South-South and South West zones. If approved by the Presidency, the number of states in the Country would now be 54.

The conference members also voted for the rotation of the Presidency between the North and South and also between the geo-political zones. They also voted against the immediate swearing-in of a Vice President into the office of the President should a sitting President die in office or be impeached.

They proposed that a Vice President should be sworn in as Acting President for 90days within which a fresh election for a new President should be held.

The delegates also agreed that the old national anthem, “Nigeria we hail thee…” should be replaced with the current one.

  2. These people are senile. Where will the funding for these states come from? What are these new states going to produce to survive? They will continue the usual practice of going to Abuja for income. What a joke. This conference is a jamboree!

If rotation is imbibed it means when its the north's time, the president will rule to favor only the north and the when it is south's time he will rule only to favor the south.

    2. Nigeria doesn't need the creation of new states. We haven't finished taking care of the 36 we have and these greedy selfish lot are screaming create more! If you look closely you'd see those that want new states are making noise out of their own selfishness! They all want "state budget"! Whether your state is productive (useful) or not! You know you're entitled to a budget! If Nigeria operated a generate your own funds system, things will be oh so different. You know that whatever money you have to spend is coming from your land, Not waiting for oil money from the south to take care of those in Benue state! Nobody (except the southerners) will be screaming state creation! I just think it's a stupid idea and not what Nigeria needs today.

They prefer their bloated salary!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Which way, Nigeria? More states? why not remain the way we are and then create more local Government areas and disburse money adequately for development in those areas. Anyways they have decided already, lets just hope its for the better, because my opinion might not or will not count. Nigeria we hail thee!

  92. Creation of more states will only increase the cost of Governance in Nigeria. Clueless Old men and women with no vision for the country.

    ReplyDelete
  93. This is rubbish d 36 states in Nigeria has no good infrastructures creatin new states means anoda huge source of embezzlement of funds

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't support the creation of such number of states. But geopolitical zones should have equal number of states. A situation where south east has only five states and the north west seven states is very bad. I don't the criteria the creators used in creating the states whether population or land mass. I think they should create two more states in the south east and one more in the other geopolitical zones excluding the north west in other to correct the imbalance. What we need now I think is more local governments so as to bring government closer to the people and possibly bring the dividends of democracy down to the grassroots if the dividends wouldn't be hijacked.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Instead of recommending the creation of more local government areas so as to ensure efficient distribution of resources and governance, these confab members are coming up with all sorts of ideas that will inevitably lead to bankruptcy and other catastrophic events.

    ReplyDelete
  99. The creation of states is to ensure grassroot development and well represented in the country. For instance Kogi state, and some eastern part esp Aba where we have billion investments going on but don't have basic social amenities.
I also support the rotation of presidency amongst regions (only wish the tenure will be limited to 4years with outstanding performance if not properly executed will bring about impeachment) and swearing in of acting president upon death of the president.
I only wish that security will be seriously harnessed just like developed countries. The Issue of Boko haram should be tackled once and for all.

    Ola

    ReplyDelete
  100. That's good......Am impressed, especially the presidential rotation. This will stop the unnecessary struggle for power when you know its not going to your region. I hope they implement this.

  101. LOL. Why do I find this funny?

    ReplyDelete
  102. d issue on ground is not all creating a new state...is it shud b abt rejuvenating the existing state...by creating modalities that will facilitate a peaceful and a problem free Nigerian wer foreign and indigenous investor can invest upon 2 help build up our national economy...ALMIGHTY GOD HELP US...Which way Nigeria....

    ReplyDelete
  103. New States ? No no no. Means more more to be spent. More governors, mores senators, more house of reps more, LGA Chairman, more more more. More security vote, more budget to be spent on elections, more expenses for the government who is not ready to tighten her belt.
There will never be a huge capital project. Since the creation in previous era, there are no new long bridges (since 3rd Mainland, ontisha bridge etc)
Government will only be sharing funds to people who will enrich themselves and share bag on rice to for your votes.

Rotation of president is nonsense. What happens to Merit? It will breed more separation than one Nigeria. Because at each region's turn the President will rule to favor his people only since its their turn.

The vice president aspect as acting president is ok.
    This time post my comment

  105. I actually thought they would have recommended 774 states for each of the current local government areas so that each village then becomes the new LGAs in the new structure

I believe with this everyone will be satisfied and the agitation for more states will die completely.

...so are we still counting...718 more states still need to be announced. I can recommend names.

  115. With all the serious issues the country is facing, this is not the time to be discussing additional states when many of the states cannot sustain themselves without the slice of the federal cake. It is about good governorship and individuals helping to make this feasible by doing their bit in the form of paying taxes. I know this is a new and unheard concept to many Nigerians who think the govt is a bottomless pit who has money to pay for everything without their own contributions.

What type of useless recommendations are these? How does any of this contribute to job creation? It doesnt. Safety? No. Better government? At all. Power? Haha nope. Nothing tangible for the everyday person in this. However their friends now have 18 new avenues for corruption! The stupidity with which this country is being led is astonishing. It is a global embarrassment that FIFA has to threaten to ban us bc the stupid ministersfired those in charge and want to put their own boys to chop! How can a country less than the size of the state of texas be proposing to have 52 states?? Thst is more than the entire USA has! Canada the second largest country in the world has 13. Russia, China the largest countries all have fewer than 50 and out tiny country wants to split 18 more staes? I pray the time for leaders with common sense comes in 2015. We the youth need to stand up and refuse to let our country be bled dry and run into the ground. If we dont have change for the better in 2015 im buyin my one way ticket back to America

  122. Aw politician r shallow minded or dey speak cos of d benefit dey would derive, cos creating more state is not necessary except dose state will generate fund 4 demselves cos all state can depend on d govt n not wit dis present govt n politicians. d way forward is to make all state generate fund demselves n not depend in federal allocation only if pressing issues set in n just a few times 4 dose dat don't av much. dis country is blessed wit natural resources let try n make judicious use of it n develop aw state n let federal govt benefit from d state n work in federal matters n security issues cos all state av natural resources but need to develop on it, as for rotating president it's a foolish move cos we need some1 wit merit n competent not from geo region cos dat like wanting to separate us cos we r too self centered, selfish n an extremist n 4 vp issue dat alright. we need a slogan like God help nigeria. Thanks
