Governor Adams Oshiomhole apologizes over comments to a widow

Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo today Friday November 29th apologized for the comments he made to a widow in Benin during an inspection tour on Mission Road, in the state capital, a fortnight ago.

Oshiomhole said that he now regretted the comments which had become the subject of discourse in the social media. The Governor said that he made the comments in anger.

The governor’s apology was made when the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), paid him a courtesy visit in Benin. Continue...

He noted that though the challenge of modern times had bestowed on the shoulders of some women and single mothers the status of bread winners of their homes, such should not be used as an accuse to flout the laws.

The Governor urged the Muslim women leaders to use their offices to propagate the essence of healthy living among children and women in the nation and the need to maintain proper sanitary conditions in their neighbourhoods.

Oshiomhole lamented that the challenge of widowhood had also exposed children to different temptations, adding that there was the need for society to be careful, to avoid unwittingly creating more problems for the nation.

He noted that money was not the best thing that guaranteed ones happiness, “but honesty and selfless service.

The Governor added that if Muslims and Christians were adequately committed to their religious doctrines, the world would be a better place.

He urged the women to propagate the message of Islam through the nooks and crannies of the nation, and to also inculcate the values of honesty in their followers.

Oshiomhole, however, assured the association of government’s support in ensuring that its present leadership made remarkable progress and also consolidated on the successes of their predecessors.

Earlier, the FOMWAN National President, Hajia Amina Omoti, urged the state government to look into the issue of the teaching of Islamic Religious Studies in public schools in the state.

Omoti also solicited for government’s moral and financial support for the effective running of the association.

    1. I can imagine how infuriated he must have been when the said event occured- he lost every sense- anger is short madness.
I hazard that, not only will he reinstate the woman of all he took from her, but he's also under some 'unspoken' obligation to do good by her.
      And I trust he will.
      Infact, I know he will.
Unlike most people, I truly think this man is a good leader and. Anyday, my vote's for him.

In a normal advance country/society he sud hv been force to resign by now bcus he was voted to serve the people and not the other way round by claiming to be demi-god. rubbish man i must say and a widower for that matter enjoying public funds

This is what you get for failing to control your temper.
If you had been able to bridle your tongue, you would have no business making such an embarrassing apology and you wouldn't be the subject of this negative discussion.
Next time, if you know you can't control your anger, stay in your car and wave your hand at your country men...or bark out orders( that's what most of ye politicians are known for).

  50. That's the definition of leadership for me..acknowledging one's error and remediating it. We're not infallible. That's why a portion of the holy writ states that he who does not stumble in words is perfect man. We stumble always with our mouth, and it is only with the instrument of the mouth that such missteps can be corrected. He has acted right and this should stem the tide and flow of vituperations.

  66. Unfortunately, the damage has been done. The Peoples' Governor has disappointed us.I am of the opinion that he should have exercised caution and patience rather than allow himself get carried away by anger. It was enough punishment to have the task force seize her goods. But to tell her bluntly to 'go and die' is outright insensitive and inhuman. Poor widow! If he is sincerely remorseful, he should return her goods, and possibly pay for a shop for her. QED!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Nigerian governors think chasing beggars, roadside traders, paupers and homeless people off the street is going to bring development. They're obsessed with demolishing buildings, structures, churches including houses built by previous administrations. I laugh at them. They end up creating new problems because they're too blind to look at the source.

Personally, I never liked Gov. Adams, well not as a governor per say, but fashion-wise he just wasn't 'representing' properly. But aside from that, his latest remark was heartless. Even that governor from the US (New york State), that exchanged words with a citizen, wasn't this careless with words. He could have reasoned with her, if that didn't work 'cold comfort' - lies you tell to avoid confrontation "everything'll be ok". They say part of what you truly feel is revealed when you make a slip. Adams secretly looks down on the people who elected him. Now that we've seen his true color there's no need going about pretending to be a saint.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Let him go and apologise to the woman face to face and the scene should be made public, then your words 'maybe' spunged out from our memory.

APOLOGY MY FOOT: OSHIOMOLE GOD IS COMING AFTER YOU WATCH OUT!

WHAT OSHIOMOLE DID FOR THAT POOR WOMAN WAS ENOUGH FOR HER TO COMMIT SELF-IMMOLATION(ACT OF SETTING ONESELF ON FIRE AFTER DEEP EMOTIONAL SOMERSAULT). IF YOU SAW HOW THE WOMAN BEGGED AND CRIED YOU WOULD DEDUCED THAT OSHIOMOLE SNIFFED LIFE OUT OF HER SOURCE OF HAPPINESS. HIS APOLOGY SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED BY ANY LIVING WOMAN OR WIDOW OUT THERE. IN AS MUCH AS I DID NOT SUPPORT GRIDLOCK MARKETING PEDDLING NOR ROAD HAWKING, MY LEFT BRAIN WAS RIGHT THAT WHAT THE EDO STATE GOVERNOR DID, WAS A SERIOUS HEAVY JAB ON THE POOR, AND THE HAVE-NOTS. OSHIOMOLE SHOULD EITHER SET THE WOMAN'S BUSINESS BACK ON TRACK IN A MORE DECENT ENVIRONMENT, PUTTING SMILES ON HER FACE BACK OR HE SHOULD GO AND MAKE HISTORY IN NIGERIA BY RESIGNING DISHONOURABLY. A leader who cannot control his temper is not fit to be one, you simply lack compassion and think you are god because you are gov today. You could have as well asked your men to kill the woman for flouting the law, heartless man. You are more of a nuisance to the society than that poor widow you dehumanized. You only succeeded in killing the little remaining respect I had for you since you decided to align yourself with born to rule Buhari who has unleashed Boko Haram on innocent Nigerians for losing an election and Czar Tinubu who wants to make Nigeria his empire. 116. That is not an apology, when you apologize you are remorseful but Oshiomhole isn't, besides it took too long for him to do it, and again he did it privately which shouldn't be because the woman was molested publicly. What leader will get as angry as telling a poor widow, "you are a widow, go and die". Where is his compassion? Does the world end with him being a governor? Let's see if he is God. Women and men who are sympathetic with women take note, make sure Oshiomhole is doesn't get your vote in any election again. This phrase "you are a widow, go and die" should always be raised and used against him in any future election. Enough of heartless people in leadership.

  117. Arrant nonsense. Y shout at her in d first place. D moment she has identified herself as a widow, u cld have soft pedal and reprimand her verbaly, not to tell her to go and die. Thank God ur wife too Don die; are u a happy man? Please propose to d woman afterall u are a widower. Just a good advise to a naughty man.

  119. why is it that; the evil that men do liveth after them, but the good that they do are interned in their bones? Ofd all the good deeds Oshiomole has done, this one bad thing is what Nigerians wont forget even after an apology Haba! I'm also of the opinion that the widow should be compensated but we shouldn't carry it overhead as if the woman never erred in the first place. Appeal to pity to me is the worse form of sentiment.

Its just happened that this came on air, many has suffered worse from our so called leaders. Apology or no apology,my qstn is what happens to the woman and her kids?

    ReplyDelete
  133. It takes a worthy leader to own up for his mistakes and apologise, well done Mr. Oshimole, now do the needful... Infact, give the woman something more meaninful than the wares U seized...

    ReplyDelete
  134. You all speaking trash about this man should shut up, he is a human being like anyone. But he is a higher man for finding his fault and apologizing. You all act more disgraceful than this. Show me a better person than Adams Oshiomole... Ignorant Nigerians. Who never value the good things they got till it is gone. You all are crucifying him now. He is a good leader, end of story.

  155. Love all the comment I have read here lynda. Anyway, he should apologies to the woman and return her seized goods and a compensation to her for the embarrassmenttp she suffered . The Gov shod resign cos he has failed the masses he claimed to serve. I don't knw what he is apologizing for? APC is leading by example. Gov fash also told the igbos to leave Lagos, if they can't adapt to his new laws. Sometimes I wonder what progressive means?

    ReplyDelete
  156. Governor Adams Oshiomole led a task force into the streets of Benin to clamp down on street hawkers who block the roads with their wares and risk their lives in the process.
First, street trading has been outlawed in the major streets of Benin city and there has been massive campaigns in the media and series of warnings issued out to erring traders. Anyone who flouted the law and continued in street trading was indulging in an act of illegality, irrespective of his or status, sex, tribe, creed or religion.
The fact that the woman in the video is a widow does not give her licence to flout the law and get away with it. The act of confiscating her wares is supported that the same legislation that outlawed street trading. In addition, the woman ought to be arrested and prosecuted but the Governor chose to cut her loose after her intense pleading.
Governor Oshiomole may have over reacted by telling her to go and die but those where the words of a leader who was frustrated by the stubbornness and non compliance of the widow and her ilk. No leader will be happy to have his directives flouted brazenly.
It is this utter disregard for law and order that make Lagos residents risk their lives by indulging in trading along railway tracks long after such acts were outlawed; not to mention such risky and despicable acts such as hanging on trains or sitting on top of them while they travel along the railway tracks.
We need to imbibe the discipline to obey simple directives when they are issued out rather than continue to thrive on the culture of impunity. That widow broke the law and needed to be disciplined, pure and simple. However, the comrade governor should also contain his anger and watch his utterances in the future because uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
