Singer Lauryn Hill sentenced to 3 months in prison for tax evasion

Despite paying her back taxes in full, singer Lauryn Hill, has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for tax evasion.

At her last court hearing Lauryn Hill was given two weeks to come up with $500,000 toward her $1.8 million tax debt. According to reports, Lauryn Hill paid $900,000 to the IRS on Sunday but it wasn't enough to keep her from getting locked up.

Yesterday Monday May 6th, Ms Hill was sentenced to three months in jail, a $60,000 fine, and one year probation. She must report to prison on July 8th to start serving her sentence. Before she was sentenced, Lauryn Hill said something. Find it after the cut...

Before she was sentenced Lauryn Hill explained,
"I was put into a system I didn't know the nature of. I'm a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me. I sold 50 million units. Now I'm up here paying a tax debt. If that's not likened to slavery, I don't know what is."

    3. Sharrap, it is not deep...everyone is required to pay tax, not just black people.
Maybe if we had a functioning tax system and people paid tax in nigeria, it will be a better country.

  7. What is all this slavery talk????....whether you are white or black IRS will come after you if you don't report everything while filing your taxes. Ask Donald Trump how much he pays in taxes. thats why the guy keeps giving to charity so that he wont have everything garnished......She is now playing the victim. Abeg go and sit down somewhere, you cant cheat the system. At least not in America. They will eventually come after you even if its 50 years Down the line.

  17. Yeah lauren, it is likened to slavery. Only that this time it's mental slavery caused by your own hands due to your ignorance. You are paying the price of financial recklessness. You got what you deserved cause you ought to have known better.Ignorance is no excuse. Serves you right!!
    The good nigerian.

  19. The I to the R to the S don't care if you are a celebrity or not, when they come for you, they are taking you down. Every year, I pray "baba God, make them no take eye see me o, take ear hear me o! Blind them to my money o in Jesus name, AMEN!" LOL I'm serious you all.

On a more serious note, she should have saved the unnecessary statement, had the expensive lawyers do the talking and make arrangements for her affair during her three months absence. People who make way less than she does such as MYSELF make sure that April 15 doesn't catch us without our annual visit to the accountants office with budgeoning boxes of receipts. The only people not required to file are those who are below the poverty line and Ms. Hill is very very far from the poverty line.

Well, she will be fine. She can write some really good music from this experience.

  20. Why did she have to bring slavery into this?
I agree whites are despicable but she needn't bring the past into this.

  24. Its the law and i bet you know it!!

Tax evasion is a crime and and a punishable offense why liken it to racism

  25. Lauryn Hill you no well you hear? What a cop out! How can you claim ignorance of tax laws in a place like the USA where it's almost like committing murder if you evade tax. Your record company would certainly have assigned you a finance manager. There have been many examples of artists etc falling foul of the law on tax issues. You didn't learn from that? abi you no buy T.V. with some of those $m sales revenue share? You spent the money on jamo weed with Damien Marley, talk true?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hill's problem began when she began to smoke ganja and went to live in Jamaica and married a son of Bob Marley... now left high and dry... she stills has it in her system... lucky its only 3 months.

  27. Ladies and gentlemen, the negative effects of marijuana...

  28. Just bcos you paid doesn't mean you can't/won't be jailed...the law is the law...jail time is the punishment/deterrent from breaking the law...is like someone stealing and then he returns the money and then asking "why am I being jailed?"....you already committed a crime and there are consequences

  32. LMAO. 'A system I didn't know the nature of'? She just insulted all the African American people in America! How many years does she need to "understand the system"? She doesn't understand the concept of paying tax? When she was making millions she didn't realise that you should always have an accountant if you don't know what you should pay in taxes? If she's referring to "slavery" she had better be speaking for people of all races who have to pay tax and even that's laughable. Abeg, some of us across the Atlantic have more serious problems

    ReplyDelete
  33. Abeg dont drag Africa and slavery into this.when you were making money there was no slavery.may be you should come and live in Nigeria so that you save us this insult.............................visit the newest blog on political issues www.africaintels.com.Boko haram is political not religious

  39. Hello People! First of all we are all slaves to the system and Lauren may of tried to avoid it and got caught but trust me your favorite celebs and rich millionaires avoid it for more than half of what they earn and that's why they remain rich. Maybe she wasn't so smart as they are but as far as i'm concerned we"re all slaves to the system and freedom is only a state of mind or if you are THAT rich that you never got to think about theses issues. Some of you need to learn to read between the line instead of taking everything so literally. DAMN!

All this people that yabbing their mouth need to close their mouth, if you are not paying taxes in the U.S. When you keep working hard and making money and they you get your paycheck back and almost half of it is gone in taxes to pay for some lazy people who don't want to work. Tell me what form of slavery that is bigger than that.Monkey dey work babbon dey chop. Smh. But Lauren should have known that the IRS don't play with their money.
