Check out this piece on President Jonathan in the UK Guardian

The piece sums up President Goodluck Jonathan's 3 years in office as president of Nigeria, written by UK Guardian's Remi Adekoya. See it below...
Nigerians had no rational reason to believe their lives would improve after Goodluck Jonathan became president three years ago this week. The list of promises their rulers have broken is so long it would make a virgin cynical. But then Nigerians can be stubbornly optimistic.
When Jonathan first appeared on the political scene in 2007, when Nigeria's then president, Olusegun Obasanjo, announced him as the running-mate of his party's next presidential candidate, Musa Yar'Adua, many mythologised the good fortune that seemed linked to Jonathan's first name. And so, when Yar'Adua died in 2010 from heart disease and Jonathan was handed the most coveted job in Nigeria, many voters believed good luck had come to Nigeria. Were they right?

Nigeria's economy has averaged an impressive 7% annual growth since 2010. Fiscal policy is responsible. The country has a debt-to-GDP ratio of roughly 18% and a budget deficit of under 3%, levels Europe would be delighted with today. This is largely thanks to finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former World Bank managing director. But Jonathan deserves praise for not intefering.

Still, his end-of-year report is not spotless. While the economy is booming, precious little wealth trickles down to the poor. Jonathan must be more energetic about changing that. The electricity supply is erratic, so businesses and individuals spend fortunes on generators and diesel. This in one of the world's biggest oil exporters. Things have improved since 2010, but far too tepidly: Jonathan only gets a C minus.

Infrastructure also remains a problem. Without a modern road network, doing business in Nigeria will remain prohibitively expensive and logistically challenging. Nigeria is a federation: individual states play a big role here. In the richer, well-governed states such as Lagos, where the commercial capital city is located, progress is visible. But Jonathan needs to do more to facilitate modernism in poorer states: he gets a C.

On healthcare, Jonathan gets an F. If a Nigerian gets cancer today and can't afford private treatment, he will die. Even obtaining aspirin in a public hospital can prove impossible.

Education is particularly problematic: tens of millions of Nigerians are illiterate. Most cannot afford an education: without government assistance, thus far feeble, they will remain intellectual invalids. Nigeria's rulers need to understand that a country is not respected because of the number of oil barrels it sells, but because of the quality of citizen it produces: F.

Jonathan's record on corruption is a disgrace. A recent report from the US State Department was spot on when it cited "massive, widespread, and pervasive corruption affecting all levels of government".
Asked to disclose his assets, the man whose parents couldn't afford shoes refused. For emphasis, he said he "doesn't give a damn" what anybody thinks about it. The Council of States, led by Jonathan, meanwhile pardoned his former boss, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who had been convicted of money-laundering.

On security, Jonathan has dithered. Boko Haram, the Islamist terrorist group, has killed thousands on his watch, while he seems unsure whether to use crushing force or grant "amnesty" (read: bribes), as he has offered. Boko Haram laughed in his face. It is Jonathan's government that should plead for amnesty, it has suggested.

In a country where the rule of law remains a dream, Jonathan's message is terrible: he is, in effect, saying: "Prove to us you are strong enough to make our lives difficult and we'll give you a share of the pie." How can a president expect loyalty from his citizens if he appears to lack the power to protect them?

It's no easy job running a country that is half-Christian, half-Muslim, underdeveloped and home to some 250 ethnic groups. Some say Jonathan is too weak for the job. But you don't have to be a great man to be a great president, as long as you are clever enough to you surround yourself with wise advisers, possess the intelligence to process information and have a steadfast desire to improve things for your people.

I personally don't deny that Jonathan some good intentions. But he is hostage to the powerful interests that catapulted him to the top. Ultimately though, he is Mr President, which gives him some pretty sharp fangs. If he wants to be remembered fondly, he should start baring those fangs in the interest of his people. Otherwise, he might as well call it quits in 2015, and spare us a second term. Nigeria has a lot of catching up to do. There is no time to waste.

    2. A very concise & objective piece. GEJ still has a lot of work to do.With leadership comes great responsibility. He should ante up his obligations in making Nigeria a force to reckon with.

    3. While we all agree that Nigeria is summarily 'fucked' , I do not see why it should be published in the guardian if the UK. We don't generally report stories of perversion of the British in Nigerian newspapers! This just drives the disdain the rest of the world who like reading the Guardian have for us. Shame he has not revealed what we don't know already. All these sell outs with Nigerian names who like to wash crap in world wide public. The British would not change the country for the better, folks... It is you, me and us. Mr Adekoya take note!

    5. Jonathan and his friends believe it is their time. They are not going to leave without their pockets filled.

But our condition will not change until we make individual changes. Nigerians, over to US.

God Bless Remi Adekoya for speaking the truth without fear...Johnathan is the worst president Nigeria has ever produced,he's totally Clueless about what governance is really about..He's kissing too many asses just to stay in power and he's done nothing for the ordinary people who voted him into office..I hope he @least reads this article, just maybe it'll serve as a wake up call for him!

  7. She's still taking it all soft. This is bullshit statistics. GEJ is a cunt. We don't need no 7% and 18% to know that this country is looking hopeless. An average Nigerian cannot afford good education, good clothes, even to eat sef na wahala for more than half of the country... And we are increasing by 7%..

  9. Somebody hand this articulate man an award. Somebody else please print this in large font and hand it to the man we unfortunately call our president. It should be a sin that this great nation still tackles these stupid problems in 2013. I don't get why the greed that runs through Aso Rock is so blinding to our shameless govoners that nobody feels it is anyones duty to at least put a good effort into basic attributes. Indeed Rome wasn't built in a day but i'll be damned if it took this long.

  11. Growth Growth Growth we keep hearing, bla! bla!! bla!!! "Nigeria's economy has averaged an impressive 7% annual growth since 2010. Fiscal policy is responsible. The country has a debt-to-GDP ratio of roughly 18% and a budget deficit of under 3%", If the life of the common man is still as it was with the basic infrastructures still in absentia, where is the visible proof of growth in the country? Good you mentioned that Nigerians are stubbornly optimistic because after all that's all we have left, Hope keeps us going, Hope that one day there will be a tiny light at the end of the tunnel. That's our only choice.

    1. Just bcos the masses Rae suffering doesn't mean that the economy isn't growing..the problem is that the govt steals the money and so it doesn't trickle down to the common man...

      Delete
    2. economic growth is measured by changes in GDP, while economic development is measured by reduction in inequality, unemployment and poverty, economic development is not a prerequsite for economic growth, but economic growth is needed for economic developmet,

So yes the economy is growing, but the economy is not developing, beacause unemployment, inequalty and poverty keeps getting worse, dis is due to corruption and lack of foresight by the government,

I believe jonathan is not the only problem, PDP is part of our problem, we need to flush out everyone in +h¬ present system, let's replacE them with new ones, even tho we don't know what the new party has to offer, we sure know its gonna breed competition which will make both parties buckle up when next they are in government

  62. Granted dat u r leaving in far away London and may not fully be in tune with d events of the day as regards politics and its underpinnings in Nigeria, yet I can not deny that largely to an extent u made valid points in dis pithy postulate. I am an undying apologist of GEJ administeration and I must concede that he has not done enough in d health sector of this country, job creation has been on a snail pace but with the much purported improvements in d financial sector tantamount to wooing private investors in d country dat as put to purpose by d midas touch of d enigmatic Iweala, it is only a matter of time before unemployment will be minimum in dis country. D Issue of Boko Haram continues to remain a hydra-headed monster which every public affairs analyst has chosen to ignore bc of d obvious yet GEJ has proven beyond reasonable doubts that he is committed towards nipping d menace in d bud.
I choose to disagree with people who are wont to label GEJ as bein weak, clueless and every order sobriquet undeserving of a president. This is bc there has been a significant improvement in the power sector bearing in mind the billions of Naira dt hs been pilfered in d quest of achieving barely 2000 watts. Honestly it is not where Nigerians want it to be but credit should be given for the much we have while Govt continues to make concerted effort in ensuring steady supply of electricity that will undoubtedly improve small and medium scale businesses in Nigeria. even Doyin Okupe hs put his name on the line while giving credence to govt's commitment in dis regards.
I do not envy GEJ's position but as a leader committed in writing his name boldly in Gold, he hs to as a sign of dedication to his duty, continue to play his part upon fortune stage, by turnin a deaf ear to d hash criticisms and deliver d dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
I am neither Doyin Okupe, nor Reuben Abati neither do I enjoy as much as they do but I am a patriotic Nigerian.

  78. The economy growing at 7% has absolutely nothing to do with either Jonathan or Okonjo Wahala. The credit goes to all those fearless investors ( local & international) who in spite of all the odds put their money into the economy. Some of that credit may go to Obasanjo who during his time in office canvassed strenuously for investors and they finally came and those people in Lagos who provided enabling environment for businesses to thrive. Jonathan has nothing to do with this at all. As a matter of fact Jonathan does not want to help those in Lagos and its environ to provide the needed infrastructure. He is getting credit for what he does not deserve.

  93. No write up on President Jonathan could be truer and more spot on as this, as at today. Not even a line should be added or subtracted to capture precisely how our president has fared. And from this objective write-up it is glaring that the president overall has not fared too well to deserve a second term. Those are my personal thoughts though. And that's why I consciously laugh and frown at those endorsing the president for a second term in office inspite of his many leadership lapses/ failures. I see such people as jokers or modern day comedians. They just CAN'T BE SERIOUS! I wonder if they realise that more people have lost their lives under the present administration more than any other civilian regime. I end by saying a BIG THANK YOU to the author of this piece! I consider it a MASTERPIECE!

  99. "I personally don't deny that Jonathan some good intentions. There is no time to waste". Perfect.

  100. No doubt GEJ has done a few, i repeat a few things. I mean he has fixed a few roads out of many, Increased power supply though mine is worse now, tightened his grip on corruption while pardoning a rapist, a money launderer, etc. Let him just fix 1 thing porperly be it corruption or power or roads and let people remember him for it.
Almost doesnt count its whether you got it done or not.

I mean how can you let Boko Haram exist in your tenure at times of crysis INACTION is a form of ACTION and it says indirectly support. He has not hired any international specialist consultants (because its new to Nigeria), up till now the whole of Nigeria doesnot know what the bombs are made of, how its triggered etc. The Boston Bombing enlightened the whole world and countermeasures are already in place, in Nigeria we let thesame thing happen over and over again? Chemicals can be traced, trigger systems can be jammed, etc Whats he and those he surrounds himself with doing, they should THINK & ACT to Help Nigeria because we are off course!?

  101. Datsharpboy you sound like an ignoramus , apologies , you are more a pathetic sycophant than a patriotic Nigerian, you probably don't know the standards of a serious working nation, to laud mediocrities... I cringe

  102. LINDA. I HAVE MADE SEVERAL COMMENTS ON YOUR BLOG THAT YOU NEVER PUBLISHED. I JUST PRAY YOU PIBLISH THIS ONE....WELL, THE WRITER IS VERY CORRECT. I WANT TO BELIEVE HE INTENDED TO EDUCATE PEOPLE OUTSIDE NIGERIA AND NOT ALL OF US IN THE COUNTRY. CAUSE WE KNOW ALL THIS ALREADY AND CANT DO A THING ABOUT IT.
MY TAKE ON NIGERIA:NIGERIA WILL NEVER BE BETTER UNTIL THE END OF THIS LIFE.IT WILL ONLY ONLY GET WORSE RIGHT OWN TO WORST.(TOO MANY SIGNS TO BUTTRESS THIS FACT)
MY STANDS:THOSE THAT KNOW ME, KNOW I HATE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ANYTHING. ANYTHING I DONT LIKE, I TAKE AN ACTION.
MY ACTION:PROCESSING PERMANENT RESIDENCY FOR MY FAMILY AND I IN CANADA. SOON LEAVING THIS COUNTRY FOR GOOD.
MY SUGGESTION(FOR THOSE THAT STILL HAVE FAITH IN NIGERIA): GET ALL THE POLITICIANS IN NIGERIA, PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE (THEIR CHILDREN)PUT THEM IN ONE STRAIGHT FILE, HAVE ANOTHER PARALLEL LINE WITH SOLDIERS.....AND GIVE THE ORDER. GOD BLESS NIGERIA

  103. The credit for d 18% debt to GDP ratio should not be given to Jonathan or Okonjo Wahala but to Obasanjo who paid down the debt before leaving office. What JOnathan did since he came into office, was to put Nigeria back into debt and the debt keeps increasing. The guy who wrote this piece did not do a thorough analytical job at all. He is giving credit to Jonathan that he does not deserve.
