World bank race: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala loses out to Jim Yong Kim

Nigeria's Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, today lost out to Korean-American Physician and US nominee, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, in the battle to choose a successor to the out-going President of the World Bank, Mr. Robert Zoellick.

The Executive Directors of the World Bank Group selected Dr. Jim Yong Kim as President for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2012 and it ddn't come as a surprise to Mrs Okonjo-Iweala.
You know this thing is not really being decided on merit," she said before the announcement.

LMAO! Abi o...

  10. It's a pity. Really hoped she made it. Indeed. These things have never been decided on merit. The U.S always ever have their way on this when it's the World Bank.

However I do not support her resignation of her current post in Naija's FEC and head of the country's economic mgt team. For all the flak we hit her, we mustn't forget that it was thru Iweala we began to know the kind of funds getting to States and local govt. areas in the budget alloacation schemes.

Madam, just dust yourself and get back to work on the double. Well done!

She ought to know better that the world was watching when her policy of oil subsidy removal destroyed many lives. All she did was to send her thoughts and prayers to the family of those who lost their lives to the savage killing of Nigerian Police. Didn't she see the video clip of innocent unarmed Nigerians being beating and killed by the police? Did she made any effort to ask Jonathan to bring those barbarians to justice?NO. Was the family of those who lost loved ones in the protest ever got any compensation from the Govt? NO. Ms. Iweala, what goes around comes around. We have a woman that has a doctorate in Economics from Harvard, she has made her mark the world over yes including the United States, if she didn't abandon the U.S. and come to Nigeria, she would've gotten the position. The woman was already Managing Director of World Bank and yet you all open your vile mouths to call her a stupid woman. If she is so stupid why did the World Bank employ her in the first place? You choose a highly qualified woman in place of a medical doctor who spent his life working on immunizations to become the President of the World Bank. I bet many of you think it wise to give your financial instruments to your medical doctor to manage for you.

The world bank is always headed by an American and the IMF by a European...so for her to win would have been a major shocker and she probably knew it. She may have been the most qualified because of her previous experience with the bank. I for like make she commot for Naija sha and although I disagree with some of her policies, she is definitely a smart woman. People should stop hating - pls what have you achieved ehn???

  39. Nigerians should really learn to appreciate their own, we are talking WORLD BANK president, instead of these insults, we all should reflect, a Nigerian was even considered for the job. Please guys, let's learn to appreciate what we have, rather than being negative all the time.

  40. Nigerians, we are a nation filled with hatred and bile. A well qualified sister decided to contest for a position that ordinarily she would have won hands down but lost due to world politics and the best we could do is to insult her person.
We should try to remove the log that is covering our eyes please; we keep blaming her for misdeeds of a bunch of criminals that has continued to mortgage our future for their personal selfishness. She had done her bit, managed to reduce our debt profile that has been tripled back since then yet nobody has questioned our 'elected officials'.
Okonjo-Iweala has tried to question the 'status-quo' of international politics; where if you are not an American or European, you cannot lead the World Bank or IMF. She has choosen to come back and give her quota to an ungrateful nation; she could have stayed back in the US and be VERY comfortable but she came back to work and be abused, cursed and maglined. At least she is doing something with her life and talent and giving back to a country she still believes in. More than I can say for most of us...
This is why people like her have refused to come out to give back to the nation; why should they put their hard fought reputations and careers at stake? We have too much bile, hate and anger in us and should channel them to the right areas or better still, make something positive out of them.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Results surely should speak louder than a pile of paper certificates..She has been Nigeria's finance for 2 terms and all people rememba her for is for oppresive anti-people policies and the subsequent fuel protests that grounded the nation for 2 weeks in January. If she is such a good economist, how come we cant see the effect of the anti-poverty projects of the World Bank? Not even one? where are the phantom buses from the 'paliative measures' she and Badluck promised? Why has looting and corruption increased under her watch..from looting of millions to BILLIONS? Pleeease Madam Okonjo-wahala is a woman of great paper achievement no doubt but has made no positive contributions to the lives of Nigerians!

You definitely do not understand what the job of a finance minister is all about. One of which is not to provide hospitals etc.

The only reason she did not get the position for your information is because that office by tradition always goes to the U.S President's nominee just as the head of the IMF will always come from the nominee of the EU.

If she wasn't as good why then did the Colombian step down for her and to also support her aspirations.

Just take a look at ur country, u have served over 6years and we haven't felt ur impact. Instead, u came on air to back up s****d decisions taken by our good for nothing president by saying that 1200 buses has been bought to alleviate transportation in a country of close to 250million. U were proud to inject poverty into our economy making the poor masses suffer more than they had in the past. Of course, the rich don't bear the grunt of the subsidy removal....Mrs World Bank, u said the money that is being saved from subsidy will be re-invested into facilities to boost the standard of living and up till now, no meaningful thing has been done in the past few months, rather am sure, the money has been divided as usual...charity they say begins at home. Cordinate the Nigerian Economy make we see b4 u think of world bank. Dis no be matter of Cambridge,Oxford or Harvard degrees ooooo, this is reality now. I did not know that Nigerians are sooo IGNORANT and UNEDUCATED!!! this woman is one of the BEST brains in the WORLD and that is why she has held top positions in WORLD bank. She attended HARVARD and MIT many years ago, before a lot of nigerians even started schooling abroad. Even Financial times and other top American corporations endorsed her as the best candidate for the job and the ONLY reason why she lost is because she moved back to nigeria cos her father begged her to come and SERVE you UNGRATEFUL nigerians, and all you people do is INSULT her???? WHAT A SHAME!!!!

NO developed country in the world has the kind of SUBSIDY we have. 1. no where in this your rant like a rabid dog did I see where you mentioned any positive impact she made...all you keep talking about is her qualification....na qualification we wan chop...she was given an opportunity to put the paper work into action TWICE and she failed woefully...if she really knew what she was doing, she would have seen that the answer was not in the subsidy removal...Budget cuts of public officers expenditures backed by strict monitoring and control of funds disbursements, local investments for a diversified economy etc should have been potent factors to curb the palaver...na by Havard? There are soooo many havard alumni that have gone beyond the stage of paper work...she should step up her game and end the mediocrity.....and btw...e be like day this Linda stardom don go PLC bcos the way una take dey beef her with style is baffling....mscheew....abeg Mr. Woman, go and sit on cactus.

    2. You should first ask your mumu self, was there any subsidy left in the first place for them to remove? Last time I remember, IBB removed it and put the failed SAP in place. So in whose tenure was it restored? They have recycled the same lies IBB used, but this time they call theirs palliatives...smh. If she was serious about being WBP, she should have done the right thing then. I'm pretty sure it would have spoken for her in this contest.

    3. Yes linda may not know much of economics as with a lot of nigerians. We just want a country where we can work for legitimate wages or do legitimate business. Create the environment with d gazzalion finance and the MIT and Harvard tutoring! But no! 6yrs! Stil no!

    1. If she was serious about her job and knew she had an unfiniished business (of which she had), she wouldn't have gone for the world bank job. She has been moving in and out of 9ja and world bank without any real benefit to us save debt relief. She should stay in one place and stop taking advantage of any oppurtunitu to enhance her cv.

  59. Many of the comments on this blog just shows the damn low level of thinking of the AFRICAN MAN! How many of you here have your name on Wikipedia. I swear for Nigeria to grow there has to be a restructuring of our thinking capabilities. It is too sad! Do you guys even read the news, you just come here and hate! NOI or GEJ is not Nigeria's problem, the problem is you and I. Subsidy was the right direction to go but knowing Nigeria and her citizens, they will always blame their problems on other people. If you read the news, you will find out that many of the nations, we want to become DO NOT HAVE SUBSIDY. Yes, they have infrastructure but I will not be wrong if some people here are the neices and nephews of governors/senators and Nigerian leaders who squander the money. I am proud of NOI and I know that if she was from asia, she could have gotten that position. Some of you here are laughing but if you search your mind, you will know that WE are denied a lot of things simply because we are from AFRICA! You, Me, all of us need to step up our game! Lets start using our minds for productive things other than hating. That is what developed nations do to become developed! Oya haters come and hate! I will be waiting for you! LIB please publish my comment!

    1. My dear u better get informed and stop being inform utter bullocks. ALL of the countries we r trying to emulate hav some form of subsidy e.g usa has on agriculture, uk has on health, and welfare.

      Delete
    2. We don't get much from the govt to help us as citizens, and unless ur not affected by fuel at N140, subsidy removal isn't the way to go, especially when we r sure that the same govt that csused the problems in d first place WILL NOT appropriately apply any gains of such subsidy except into their pocket!

  60. I admire NOI, I look up to her and wont stop doing so. And she's not the problem; the problem is Africa (and for some who do not know, the failing nation she comes from is supposed to be the giant of the continent) is never taken seriously, yet we pride ourself in so much mediocrity. Look at it this way,the US and EU member nations own 50% of the voting rights of the World Bank simply because they CONTRIBUTE. They bring the money, AFRICA borrows it and mismanages it. Ask yourself, will you entrust the bulk of your money to someone who has a history of squandering it? Little things we cannot get right; we debate electricity/corruption/unemployment/illiteracy/poverty just name the vice, we need to come to a realisation that until we start taking our selves seriously, no one will ever take us serious. We will continue to remain a “developing continent”. Yes, haters hate me for this! But you know I have said the truth. (LIB please post my comment). **dropsmic**

and you people think any kinda change is coming...

i personally knew she didnt stand a chance, her opponent grew up as an American and wasbacked by America..

besides, it's only in Nigeria thatr people would expect much from a woman thatmade a budget of #1billion for food, obviously right thinking societies are beta than that!!

you are obviously a fool! As a finance minister what did she do if not to join the looters to loot funds from the Nigerian treasury. If Africans were not stupid what is our business with the world bank we have so much resources and wealth that we do not need the world bank support for squat. But due to our leaders corruption like “gwalagwala” we do not know our worth.

  68. @ the SAGE: So what is your response to Nigeria's problem???

Sanusi Lamido gave a speech recently in America and he talked about how Nigeria will spend about 1 trillion naira on subsides this year, this money will go to a few corrupt nigerians who import fuel(some dont and forge documents), meanwhile over 70% of the popluation is in abject poverty. Isnt it better for this money to be used to provide electricity, roads, health care etc. LOOK at the bigger picture!!! once subsidy is removed private investors will come in and there will be competition and the price of fuel will go down again!! this is the same thing that happened with telecommunications in nigeria(mtn, etisilat, glo). Once there is competitions prices go down! U people should go and learn economics!! and stop abusing a woman who is doing her job well.

Investors will never come into a market that is subsidized

    1. Can't you see? Its a vicious cycle! Its d same soln to d same old problem since IBB's time, they've just been using different names;paliatives, ptf, etf, etc.And see where we r!its that we should remove subsidy and trnsfer the wealth elsewhere; whereas from history, we've seen that we don't even need to hav subsidy in d first place and our fuel will still be very low in cost! The solution is wot they know already, face the curruption in fuel importation, repair our refineries, cut off unnecessary expenditure and work on power. But then all these need to have them look in each other's faces, so instead of doing that, they decide to take the easier route. Condemn nigerians to more poverty.
Only a made man does d same thing over again expecting a differrent result. Sanusi may be brilliant, but he's also dull.

    2. Besides the law of demand and supply ur using as the fulcrum of prices crashing with deregulation, is hinged on a free market system. U think that ppl who make loads of the skewed market will allow such? Hav u considered monopoly? Am sorry, but if nigerian antecedents are anything to go by, generally and especially on fuel, prices don't crash. Am telling u, we will be back to square one, d only difference is we will be paying subsidy with fuel prices at N140. Reason? Because ppl who should stem the rot are direct or inderct beneficiaries of d rot. *sighs*

  69. Please stop blaming Okonjo Iweala for all the problems in nigeria, she is just a finance minister trying to do her job and you Nigerians keep frustrating her!!!

Blame the past leaders and government officials who fail to do their job!.. She secured debt relief for Nigeria from the paris club, that is the 1st time it has ever happened. She resigned the 1st time because she refused to collect bribe and allow them steal money for Obasanjo's 3rd term bid. This is a principled and accomplished woman. Pls tell me what other ministers are doing???

    1. Abeg, help ♍e tell them.wђã† you said ΐƨ very true and nigerians choose τ̲̅ǿ forget that fact. Nigerians rush τ̲̅ǿ crucify her over τ̣̣ђё subsidy removal issue and forget other facts that attest τ̲̅ǿ her character.wђã† they do not realise ΐƨ that subsidy on petroleum has τ̲̅ǿ go eventually and this battle has been fought countless times and will still be fought once a new president comes. Fine, she knew, we all knew she wasn't going τ̲̅ǿ win but at least she challenged τ̣̣ђё status quo and they admitted τ̣̣ђё shortfalls in τ̣̣ђё selection process. Since our politicians won't let her do her job, she should simply go and enjoy herself abroad instead of soiling her hard earned reputation in τ̣̣ђё name of helping her fatherland.

  70. Mrs. Okonjo-Iwuala is super qualified for the position she applied for and there's no doubt about that. Having said that, Economics or working the world bank is not the only qualification needed to run the world bank. Dr. Kim has worked extensively in underdeveloped and developing world with developing ways to assist in HIV and other ailments that are retarding growth in these areas. He has volunteered a lot of time in his career helping the poor in these regions. Advocating for medications and other things for them. His pedigree in working with the least fortunate and poor ones in very poor countries make him inn my opinion the best qualified for the position. Okonjo-Iweala needs to be here and finish what she started, let her make a mark here first before venturing out. We need are here more than going to seat in Washington DC and New York and making policy decisions. Besides, all these politicians supporting are doing it for their own selfish reasons, THEY WANT HER OUT OF THE WAY BECAUSE SHE'S COMBATIVE AND DOES NOT GIV ETHEM THE CHANCE TO LOOT THE TREASURY. She is on their way. Thank God she didnt go. A new Finance Minister and then what? he or she startes stealing as they've been doing? LET US ALL WAKE UP TO REALITY.
