Bishop David Oyedepo demands five-year single term for President and Governors

At a press conference yesterday, Bishop David Oyedepo called for a five-year single term for President & Governors.

Bishop Oyedepo said if adopted, a single 5-year term would enable elected officers to focus more on governance rather than waste time and resources attempting to get re-elected.”

Does this make sense to you?

  1. It makes a whole lot of sense...but "demand"?....that is above his pay grade.

  2. What is this 5-year term bollocks?! Why can't they just do 4 years, serve them and GO?! No, instead GEJ wants 7 years and then we kinda haggle it down to 5 years and feel as if we are getting a good deal.

  3. It does. I guess the 5yr term is emulating the british style of democracy as opposed to the US where a term is 4yrs.
4 or 5yrs, this will ensure a proper democracy and thus make candidates accountable before they can hope to contest a re-election.

  4. 4 years single term is d best, the 2nd term is always for them to steal. No to 5 years in my own opinion

  5. It makes a whole lot of sense but can it work in Nigeria?
The reason Nigerian leaders work at all is to deceive us in other to get re-elected.
If they are faced with a single term, im afraid they'd spend the whole time looting since they know thay are not returning!

  6. thot the house had adopted 6 years or so

  7. when OBJ had 8 years, was it enough for him...
all this is under normal conditions, but in naija....
a good example now is our Gov in Imo..will 5 yrs be enuf for that one, even if he thinks towards that direction, his special advisers will advise him "well"..when they know the loss at stake for them.

  8. Its not a bad idea, thou, but the powers that be in Nigeria will never allow that to happen. Nigerian leaders never believe in changes. they prefer things to remain in the status quo situation.

  11. Sounds like a good idea really but then we are stuck with them for 5yrs if they are rubbish!!

  12. guess the 5 years is just to let them feel something is added since they re not satisfied with 4 years. the demand may be reporters word.

  13. Mteeewww...that's his own opinion, just like over a million other opinions out there.

  14. Yes, agreed but Oyedepo should stick to his church. He never spoke on the yar'adua issue and now he wants to talk. Just stay in church and keep praying Papa. That's all I am saying....

  15. 5yrs so they will end up staying 10yrs each in office!!! 8yrs sef they loot us blind talk more of 10yrs(as 2nd term is now looking very natural).what he should be talking about is they should do the jobs they have been elected to do and forget about how long they should remain at the job

  16. i think he should stick to pastoring his church.4yrs,5yrs what difference does it make.they can accomplish alot in 2yrs if they want to rather than squandering money.

  17. makes a lot of sense joo!

  18. I think it's a cop out. It's like we're saying we cant hold our politicins accountable for their actions.2yrs,4yrs,5 yrs... a thieving politician is a thieving politician is a thieving politician. Instead of coming up with surface solutions, how about we take more effective measures to ensure accountability and transperency within the government

  21. I like this idaea, spoken like a true man of God, and the reasons behind it also makes sense, i even think America should adapt the same system, why spend eight years of ur life tryna achieve what can be achieved in 1 minute if u are truly honest?

  22. So he is rewriting the constitution or he is trying to be noticed. Demanding.....????

He needs to get himself versed in the constitution, get elected and be a a position to get an ammendment, then make his demands

  24. now he has found his voice.
when he went to visit a corpse in Aso rock he said it was a personal visit and he was not at liberty to tell us the details of that visit.

  25. Oga Oyedepo you want be like your brother Tunde Bakare thet shouts and make noice but deep down he was so intrested in politics. No be today , I bet you, you may not be better than those thieving politicians.

You are talking about wast, is it not wasteful of you to be using about four jets when some or your church members can not afford three square meals a day. If you were a politician you will still do likewise..... You that is afraid of the North. why did you shy away from the truth when you visited Yaradua. Please face your church.

  26. can't you people reason.....oyedepo is saying 5yrs one term which makes a little sense...

there can never be 4yrs .....for those of you who say just one term...

if 4yrs remain...it would always be 2 terms.....

    i agree with him

somebody is saying oyedepo wants to be noticed...do you think that he is a poor man like you...?

  29. This dude is just a man. Forget all this "man of g-d" BS. He has a right to his opinion, but his opinion carries no more weight than that of 50 or so million Nigerian males who are 21 or above. Unless and until Oyedepo is elected into an elective office, he speaks for nobody but himself, and his opinion remains just that - his opinion.

  30. Oscar and Shola stop saying what you don't know, be careful lest u in cure the wrath of God, if you read ur Bible, u would have noticed that leaders in the bible sought the counsel of God's messengers for productivity and guidance.

Did u bother finding out where He made that comment? did they tell u it was at at Aso Rock? you wanted him to speak about Yaradua and the papers will carry it that a Man of God said this and what if it brought chaos? sensitivity is the word here. He does a lot of charity work for his church members who are less privileged, do u know how many people are on his scholarship scheme? do ur findings and get ur records straight before u open ur mouth in future. you wont say u were not cautioned, cause when u start seeing the effect on ur life u will remember this post.

  32. Thank you Nikky, i dont even need to say much Papa just stated his opinion and that is that. so no need to start insulting him or talking about his church. state urs and move on. Thank you and may God forgive u.

  33. @Nikky, i agree with you that he does a lot of charity work, infact much more than any of these billoniares frobes and co are celebrating but that matter of incurring the wrath of God and curses is not it.
At the end of the day, these men are men and not God.God will not punish anyone for scrutinizing their words more than he will punish me for disagreeing with you.
This idea of 'touch (critisize) not my anointed' is an abuse of scripture.it is a mentality that has been used to manipulate gullible Christians for ages.

  34. Is it an offence in Nigeria to Pastor a church, Is it an offence for a clergy man to state his own opinion on a matter,Is it an offence to be successful and wise?
Why all the harsh words against Bishop Oyedepo? When good men keep quiet we all complain no one is saying anything or proffering solutions, our men of God speak up and we rise up and criticize them. I actually like his idea, what he is saying here is that 5 years in power without having the opportunity to contest again for any public official. If this is in place, our leaders will sit up and think of serving the pple. The won't want to waste the singular opportunity they have.
By the way, Bishop Oyedepo is no puch over, his history shows he is a leader who has a heart for people and he is one of they few sterling role models we have in the country. He has a PhD in pple development and he is where he is in life today by dint of hard work and Gods grace.
