"Why I am divorcing Funke" - Femi Kuti

"I am divorcing her to protect my side of my inheritance, because I have five children. I have to protect the interest of my children. Since we are still legally married, what if I die today? The law will favour my wife. If I don't divorce her, my children may suffer. What if I die and we have not divorced and then she comes and claims everything? The other children will not get anything and there will be a big war in my family. I will be dead and my ghost will be saying don't fight, but they wouldn't hear what I am saying. We know it happens. My lawyer advised me to think of the future so I quickly regulate my will so no one can disturb my children. You know it happens in our country, when you have children from different women, there's bound to be stress. So I have to do my will and to do that requires a divorce." - Femi Kuti to Encomium Magazine

  5. Very truthful and honest answer.

As usual, let the 'men bashing' guerrilla warriors start what they know best.

  6. On the other hand, if he writes a Will why will there be need for a divorce? Am I in a different world?

  7. I think I prefer the 2-word reason they gave the court. This statement can be taken the wrong way. They should just get it over with!

  10. This guy is dumb. So if his lawyer did not tell him to divorce her, he would have hung on to her until it is too late for her to remarry. He is an arrogant and ignorant fool. Ika!

  14. Why the public show? He’s right but why publicise it? Plus, does Funke look like someone that will drag his estate with his children the same way that Seun & his Mum dragged it with he and Yeni?
I laughed because i can imagine Femi’s face when he said this.

  15. How much are we talking about here? A lot. Remember he has the rights to his Father’s music collection or something of the sort and he has his own money. His money can feed all those children and in the event that he passes, his songs will sell even more.
    The truth is bitter.

  17. @chica, do they write it on a person's face?
Aas educated and sauve as Rotimi william's kids are can you see the mess they are creating?these are SANs o and their father was the father of all SANs.I agree that their was no need for a public response but i see sense in the action.
anon 1:55, you are dumber than you sound. Is there a law stopping Funke from initiating divorce proceedings? What makes him arrogant and ignorant? That he is trying to avoid a messy future for his kids?you are a low life who deserves to crawl into a hole and never crawl back out to disturb a sane public.Next time (if you crawl out) learn to state your opinions without throwing insults around.what crime has Femi comitted besides sleeping with too many women?

  18. Anonymous who said he would have drag til it is too late for her to remarry: why must he be the one to initiate divorce? Can't a woman seek a divorce in nigeria? Silly!
@Hot'n Cold: I don't know the laws of nigeria but when I look at the cameroonian law what he says makes perfectly sense because under the cameroonian law, children born outside of the union do not get the same share as the legitimate ones and before anything is split the widow gets an automatic half which is considered her contribution and half an additional half of the husband share then a quarter is to be split among the kids. The portion of the children born out of wedlock is 1/4 of the portion of the portion of the legitimate children. So Femi's move makes a lot of sense to me: by divorcing his wife now he cust her out of his half and future money he may produce.I don't know why the insults because what is done is done, he already fathered those kids and it is a good thing that he actually pondered about what would happen if he comes to pass because a lot of wealthy men do worse and don't even leave a will...

  19. Anon June 21, 2011 4:16 PM; if i didn't know her i wouldn't have said that. Her Dad, first and foremost will tell her to let it go.

Forget FRA, the seeds of discord were already sown in his lifetime. The people who know them aren't surprised.

  22. I wish Femi would have left this at NO comment!! sigh

  23. no comment would have been a perfect response. but it makes sense to divorce her and get a new will. this will and marriage thing is complicated, it somehow makes a will void or something of that sort. my cusin actually had the issue and the question in court was whether the will was written before or after the marriage. quite complicated (for me o).

  25. Femi what a hell are you waiting for.She is not going to drag anything with you, cos she is not from a poor family... Funke loved you and believed in you. Against her fathers wish who never supported her getting married to the kuti's then she was in Unilag and had genuine love for you. She condescended to be dancing for
you but you were not Man enough. You allowed your Sister whose marriage did not workout to be controlling your wife for you. She was more or less like a househelp .Sh had no other chioce than to pack out of your house and she alleged it was simply because you preferred your closeness to Yeni than your lovely wife.....She has moved on ,divorce is not a big deal to her.
