Nigerian mom sends email telling teachers her daughter is never going to do anymore homework and why

A Nigerian mum living in Canada shared an email she sent to her daughter's teachers, informing them that her daughter is totally done with homework.
In a lengthy post, Bunmi Laditan, who is a writer, explained the reason for her decision, stating that her daughter is unable to be a child because she has over two hours of homework each day.

She listed all the ways the excessive homework has affected her child, including chest pain and waking up by 4 a.m., anxious about her school workload.
After consulting a tutor and a therapist, Bunmi was told that her 10-year-old daughter needed to cut down on her workload to avoid anxiety and depression. The mother decided to not just cut down the homework but to cut it off completely.

The post was shared in April but only started going viral a few hours ago, including on foreign new sites. The post generated over 8,000 comments, over 76,000 reactions and was shared 21,827 times.

See the rest of Bunmi's argument against homework below.

  3. These private schools will not do their work but expect parents to help them out. The home works are always too many for my nephew

    1. Word...most times they even give homework that they can't solve. Sometimes I look at these homeworks and look at my daughter and am like what are these teachers thinking?

  5. nice one from the mother sometime my daughter of 8yrs will come back by 3.30pm with volumes of assignment and questions you begin to wonder if it is for undergraduates or for the parents to answer at her age she needs up to 14hrs of sleep each day now tell me how she can achieve that even after the assignment they give them research on internet that you begin to wonder if teachers have transferred their works to the pupils

  6. This homework is overrated, teachers should do the job they are paid to you. Let my child be a child, childhood is over before one can say Jack Robinson

  8. I agree completely with this lady. Same thing I have been battling with my children's school in Nigeria for long. Never occurred to me to go through the route of this lady... with the work schedule I have, it will be difficult. But children can no longer be children. Enjoy their childhood. Have fun. The annoying thing is that the homework is mostly for the parents. I want to bond with my children no doubt but please it mustn't be over hours of homework....schools should be able to add value to children not drain them.

  12. USA and Canada, 4 hours homework for elementary school kids. Most on topics the teachers have not yet taught them, depending on the parents to be literate and do the teaching themselves.
    Terrible stuff.

  13. I completely agree with this. I almost didn't this myself. Coming back from school at 4pm and doing assignment till 6...no siesta..no rest..dinner..it's not healthy.

  14. The home works are too much abeg, sometimes my daughter gets tired, whenever I ask her to do her homework she keeps saying later, and this later never comes, and to think she is smart and love education. Sometimes I have to beat her for her to do the homework and I start regretting beating her d next second. My hubby insisted I should do what we can and pls let our daughter be. I love u my proncess

  15. What if the mom is not educated, end time teachers, collecting our hard-earned money without working,it should be schoolwork not home work.

  16. Either she's just seeking attention or her child is just plain dumb. The Canadian curriculum is one of the laziest in the world. 2 hours of homework for Where??? Just say the truth that your child inherited your low IQ

    1. I agree that the homework load shd be reduced. In ur case, some of the parents shouting u down are probably happy that their children have enough to keep them occupied while at home, as they don't have alternative engagements for them; and playing or spending quality time with them aren't options.

  18. I can relate to her post. My little cousin comes back home with loads of assignments and whenever she's called to do her home work she starts crying. This is because the assignment never ends. I am tired of complaining. It is just too much.

  20. very true! when you look at some homework like that, you will know that the teacher didnt give the child homework but the mother or whoever guardian is. Imagine someone here said a Pry 5 child was given electric circuit with bulb and electrician had to do it and the child got an "A"? that person would have paid for that service abi.

useless homework full this world. well done madam.
