Nigerian woman who gave her husband money to pay her bride price seeks divorce from him for lying about his employment status

A Nigerian woman, Faith Ogu, has asked a Jikwoyi Customary Court in Abuja to dissolve her marriage to Joseph Ogu because he deceived her about his job status. As Faith told the court, Joseph told her that he works with a bank and owns a business in Lagos that generates millions in income. He also lied about owning a house in Lugbe. Believing these, she loaned him money to pay her bride price and she also sponsored their wedding.
As Vanguard reported, after tying the knot, Faith, who is a civil servant, discovered her husband was completely jobless and she tried to encourage him to get a job, but he allegedly made no effort. She followed up by reporting the issue to her husband's sister yet there was no improvement.

While presenting her case before the judge, Mr. Everyman Eleanya, Faith said;

“He is lazy and does not want to do anything for a living; I have been lending him money, hoping he would pay back. I sponsored our wedding and even lent him money to pay my bride price.”
Faith pleaded with the court to grant her request so that she can move on with her life.
“I beg this court to dissolve my marriage so that I can be free; I am tired of feeding, clothing and paying medical bills for my husband”
A judgement could not be reached because Joseph Ogu has not been in court since the case started, so Mr. Everyman Eleanya adjourned the case to February 9th.

  5. Choi! I feel for the woman, what sort of man is that, that's what many men out there do to trap successful women. Their union can't stand on lies, I hope she gets her demand.

  21. She is not alone in this as lots of Nigerian ladies are guilty of this.

    So many so called @ big girls@ out of desperation paid their bride price by themselves and even go as far as paying their husbands monthly salaries just to be married to them.

    These women are the first to find out the marital status of single ladies who prefer to stand strong alone until the real man shows up. They are the ones who are quick to gossip the single or those bold enough to divorce their husbands.

    Lots of these girls in oil & gas, banking and well paying jobs marry out of shame/ need for an ordinary circle round their finger and the most annoying thing is all they get out of the marriage/ man is just SEX, GIGOLO STYLE. How can I pay a man salary up to N100,000, buy him a car, fuel it daily and maintain the car, take care of his immediate family etc just to be married, see myself through ante-natal and raise my child while living with a "man?"

    The funny thing, these men have their ways with these kind of women and usually at the onset, people warn them not to marry the man but they would adamantly go ahead with it, then turn around to scream "murder".

    Divorce ko, @till death do they part ni@, mtcheeeeeews.

  24. Some women love men who lie to make them feel good even when it is obvious. If the guy had come clean from the start, she probably would not have paid him any attention.Be a little careful next time and I hope you win your freedom because the guy will not make it easy for you to obtain a divoorce, he will keep skipping the court until the judge runs out of patience and grant your wish in his abscence. Goodluck

  25. The judge should allow the marriage to continue. Was the marriage conaunmated in a beer parlour? The lady should finish what she started. I advice both to reason together and see what the guy can start doing.
