'Do not address me as a strong independent black woman. It is not a compliment' - April Mason

Some feminists might find this offensive lol...but I agree with some of what she wrote. Award-winning author and speaker April Mason took to her IG page this week to write about the society getting it wrong by telling women that they are strong, independent and don't need a man. She calls BS on it. Read what she wrote on IG below and tell us if you agree with her...
Being strong and independent by societies definition is not a badge of honor. We have been programmed to believe that we don't need anything or anybody, especially a man. I don't know about you, but I don't want to be strong and carry it all.
Yes, I understand that we've had too in order to take care of our families. Well, I say NO MORE! Men get in your rightful positions and women LET THEM! We are breaking our bodies down having to do it all. We haven't a clue about our purpose because our lives have been dedicated to taking care of others and not ourselves. Back hurting, knees bad, arms weak and health issues all because of the pride associated with being called "a strong black woman". Our strength is in our FEMININITY, but we have LOST or never even tapped into it because we've been trained to strong in a masculine sense. Who cares why it happened, it's time to fix it! NO MORE BLAME! NO MORE EXCUSES! IT'S TIME TO HIT THE RESET BUTTON. Time to get back to being a feminine woman! IF MY MESSAGE ISN'T FOR YOU, KEEP IT MOVING! My name is April Mason and I approve this message! #woman #inspire #inspiration #blackdress #blackwomen #blackwoman #dress #shoes #hair #wife #sister #bff #love #marriedatfirstsight #independent #blackgirlmagic #motivation #fitness #film #tv #hollywood #movies

    1. I don't agree with her.

You don't know what you have till you loose it. At least she's American. Just decades ago, African parents sent their daughters to the kitchen while the sons are sent to schools. We just started crawling out from that mediocrity and we aren't even half way done. Female are still being oppressed in almost every sphere of African society.

Americans have had it good for long...so understandably, some of them are bored. Well not me.

    4. She must be desperate for a man, so we should be totally dependent on men for everything, so that these Nigerian men will call us useless and go to chase small girls doing fashion designing and make up and have good reasons, or so they can make us housegirls and deprive us of education, it may fly where y are, but not here, some of these men aren't enlightened enough to understand their boundaries, if u depend on them they will make u more worthless than a sick dog and take u for granted.

    5. She's not desperate, neither is she saying we should be helplessly dependent in men. She is only saying we should remain feminine just as God created us and stop trying to take the role of the man, claiming #strong black woman.

And the men need to stop being laggards and step up to their responsibilities of being the head, godlike, just as God planned it. N:B it is not news that men Round the world are becoming emasculated (starting from the USA)

  6. She has a point I wholesomely support, modern day feminists believe the woman was made to compete in a man's world, with a man's societal roles! The definition of the strength of a man differs from that of a woman! No sex is above the other in d society we just got different roles to play feminists don't get dat!

  25. She made common sense... OKAY! Our present day MEN go curse you die, this woman. Lol. One has to fight to make a man do what he has to do these days. Men are so lazy these days and stingy... and you know what they want you to be 100% submissive. You can't eat your cake and have it. Choose to be the man or a partner

    2. Obviously, Ms. APRIL has had it good all her life, won't even give credit to women out there making sure she has it good.
Being a strong independent woman doesn't necessarily mean you don't need the opposite partner. Everything doesn't have to be a battle. It just means you don't sit around waiting for someone to do the basic things for you. Most women who do that have fallen victims of very abusive relationships they can't get out of. Who wouldn't want to be taken care of if he/she is so blessed? Some people can like toh generalise using myopic point of view sha.
The world is vast, different people with different perception. At least, people who enjoy publicity should caution what they put out there. Respect goes a long way, my dear.

  26. I approve your message, some folks are out there deceiving themselves and claiming strength. It is now the new compliment. I will always advice women to be the women they were created to be. Allow the man to be the man and treat you like you are fragile, like a queen and you'll feel better than claiming strength and denying yourselves of your God given feminity.

  28. Misery needs company. All the women clamouring for strong, independent women are the ones who lost out in loving relationships. They turn their energy into hatred. Tell me who is not strong among these women: Chimanda Adichie, Patience Jonathan, Folorunsho Alakija, Michelle Obama, Melinda Gates, etc. I don't care what you have or what you think you are--everyone needs love and support.

Some ignorant women have been confused by these self-loathing women. I have never met any happy one among the self-acclaimed independent women. Some women are enjoying their marriages and progressing in their careers.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yet you mentioned Adichie! The all time feminist. Confused much?

    2. I am a woman, but not a feminist. I don't support all these women strength rubbish. Our strength lies in our femininity, but we can never be men. We need men to be men and treat us like queens that we are. Don't get me wrong, I am a career woman, I work, make my own money, but I still see myself as a woman that I am, whose husband should take care of, and not a " super, strong black woman". That's not a compliment but a curse. The black community in the USA has carried that feminist rubbish for many years and that had made the women to be women/men at the same time, doing what the men should do, because you believe in the women strength.

    3. Feminism and being feminine aren't mutually exclusive, it's not a case of one or the other. You can be strong, determined and successful in life, he solvent and take over the world, whilst in high heel stilletos.

No one is saying you should cut off your breast, and start padding your underwear, in the same breath, no one is saying you should be a whore! The truth of the matter is, we are saying people need to stop telling women what they can and can't be. What they should or shouldn't do with their bodies, we need to move past compartmentalising women.

Chosengospel, you don't know any better, and that's sad for you, but there are young women, who want more than to be some sugar daddy's arm candy. They are growing up in a world where women can be presidents, engineers and pilots, they are the ones who should be encouraged to aspire to their full potential.

If you've been indoctrinated into being a subordinate to men, but your religious beliefs, and you have accepted it, then that's your business, do not stifle the possibilities of others, because of your own abysmal estate and lack of self-esteem/self respect.

I can only surmise that your resistance to change can be linked to a sense that real men, will gravitate more to accomplished women, whilst women like yourself, can only hope for a "drive-by".

Feminism, has always been part of the Yoruba cultural identity, from the Iya-lojas to priestesses etc, women have always been held in high esteem, even for something as trivial as giving birth to twins.

In Yoruba culture, the goddess Osun, after the failure of male dieties to carry out their wards, because of drunkenness, became elevated in social consciousness for her initiative at taken the burdens onto herself, eventually bringing about creation itself.

In every Yoruba woman, is a feminist who can handle whatever life throws at her and more, with her baby tied to her back, and her Gele on fleet. It is strong women like this, that inspired the strong black women in America, who then inspired the suffragettes, feminists and successful women of today.

Feminism is an inherently Black female identity. Though it's been branded and repackaged by the Western world, it is infact what all women around the world covet the most about independent black women.

It's that essence of strength and dignity, that a black woman holds, that in the long run, makes black men strive to be better.

Yes, the concept is confusing, especially when religion has been the instrument of the patriarchy in subjugating women, to devalue their worth, but the truth of the matter is anyone who lies to you and tells you to be submissive, is just intimidated by the greatness you can achieve.

Anyone one who has told you in particular, @chosengospel, that because you are a woman, all you can be is an "object" for the purposes of men's whims, or a glorified maid, or baby incubator, has robbed you of your true potential.

Feminism is important today, now more so than it has ever been, because men have been allowed too much time to adapt and be civilized, but unfortunately they've become more aggressive, because they think all they need to do to attract women, is be brutes. Walking around shirtless and scratching themselves like gorillas. Feminism is the last defence at resisting whipped men from destroying the world, more than they already have. You have a responsibility to your daughters, if you have any to make them know that them not having penises, is not a measure of their abilities in life, the sky is the limit and that you believe, that ultimately, their happiness isn't going to be determined by men, and that a true man would appreciate their determination and not be intimidated by it.

  34. Women are becoming strong because most men are becoming weak by not taking up their responsibilities. Ask me a woman who is foolish and I will show you a woman who is endlessly waiting for a man who is not ready to be there for her, endlessly irresponsible an unreliable.. She will sure be miserable in her entire life. Yet, I bless God for all those responsible men who have made their wives their become who they should.
