3 men die inside a well in Onitsha (graphic photos)

Three men tragically lost their lives inside a well at No. 1, Hanik Street, Trans Nkisi Federal Housing, 33, Onitsha, Anambra State. According to reports, the first man was hired to dig a well deeper in a bid to find water when he mistakenly slipped and fell on Monday.

His relative, Mr Usai, 32, jumped into the well in a bid to rescue him but also lost his life in the process. A third person tied a rope around his waist before jumping into the well to rescue them but quickly came out with bruises, claiming that there were forces inside the well that was 'slapping and boxing' him.

The fourth person who claimed he could rescue them as he had black power but demanded 100,000 didn't make it out alive.

It was also reported that their corpses were later retrieved from the well on Tuesday after sacrifice of ram and a cock was sent to a native doctor.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, the The Vice Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross,Anambra state Peter Katchy said, “We don’t know the cause of their death yet, whether it was a gaseous substance that killed them or not. So we call for more investigation to unravel the mystery.”

    2. The owner of the well should be arrested. Why make them dig deeper in the first place? Seem fishy to me, hope the owner of the well didn't sacrifice those peoples lives.

  9. They obviously died due to an unknown poisonous gas down in the confined space. it most likely was H2S which in small concentration can snuff life out in seconds. no be only ram sacrifice, we should grow up abeg.

  21. This type of tragidic drama happened too about 8yrs ago in Abia state. Where a man claimed that his goat fell into suckaway pit dug by his naighbour (about 32ft) and insisted he wants his goat to be brought. In the process of tryn to bring out the goat alive for the owner, 3 able bodied men lost their lives inside the pit and at last when sacrifices were made it was discovered that there was no goat in the pit even though the goat blair to the sound of everyone. RIP to the dead and may God deliver us from all evil.

  22. This ugly situation has become the order of the day in Anambra and other cities where there is no pipe borne water and people have to resort to self help. You can imagine that in Anambra for instance, pipe borne water ceased to exist since the Peter Obi administration and all the water works destroyed and converted to shopping malls and construction sites. The people are drinking from wells and other unwholesome sources. Many have died that way and it is no longer news.Other unreported deaths over water problem include deaths from typhoid, dysentery, cholera and liver/kidney problems all because our people do not drink treated water from government water works. It is a tragedy in Anambra as more than 300 staff of Anambra State Water Corporation died of starvation and lack of salaries and their entitlements and unfortunately the wicked legacy left by Peter Obi is still being upheld by Gov Obiano though he may be ignorant of the root cause of the situation.Obiano should invite Water Board officials to see what he can do to restore water in the state.Without pipe borne water, are we moving forward or backwards.?
