Language as a tool of conquest - Femi Fani-Kyode

Read his piece below...
In the northern part of Nigeria two vessels were used as vehicles for conquest by the Fulani: religion and language. Islam was imposed by the force of arms and the use of the sword by Sheik Usman Dan Fodio whilst hausa, the language of the conquered people of the old Habe kingdom, was adopted as the official language of the new Fulani caliphate.

As brilliant and calculating as ever, the Fulani ruling class insisted that Fulfulde, their own native language, was spoken only by the Fulani themselves.

To them their's was the language of emperors, kings and conquerors and  they refused to allow their subjects and vassals to speak or learn it because they considered them to be nothing more than serfs and slaves.

For the conquered it was hausa that was to be spoken and not Fulfulde because the latter was considered to be too good for them.

There are over 100 distinct and independent ethnic groups in northern Nigeria, each with their own cultural and historical heritage and distinct language, yet they are all compelled to speak hausa.

Some of them have even forgotten their own native language or never learnt to speak it in the first place. Others do not know who they are or where they are coming from.

Some do not even know that they ever had a language or heritage of their own. Everything for them, from beginning to end, has become hausa. This speaks volumes.

Ironically the white Boers of apartheid South Africa, who were originally from Holland, adopted the same strategy of linguistic and cultural conquest when they arrived in southern Africa and established their hegemony and racist enclave in the 17th century.

Their native language was Afrikaans (which was a local derivative of the Dutch language)  and, like the Fulanis of northern Nigeria, for many generations they ensured that only they were allowed to speak it.

The black South African natives were not taught Afrikaans and they were not allowed to speak it because it was considered to be the language of the elite ruling class and their racial masters.

Allowing them to speak it would bear the implication that they were on the same level as their religious, racial and cultural masters and that was unacceptable.

They were only allowed to communicate in their own native African languages and english. This was very effective and it essentially kept the conquered in their place whilst it exalted the conqueror. That is the power and secret of language and linguistic conquest.

It is for this reason that the people of France, for example, refuse to speak english with you when you are in their country even though their english may be fluent.

They recognise the fact that once they adopt another man's language as being the one that is commonly used in their own land it is an acceptance of subjugation.

They acknowledge the fact that such a concession or, to use a more appropiate word, "submission", is essentially an acceptance and wholehearted espousal of a sinister and subtle form of cultural and linguistic imperialism.

Worst still it is symptomatic of the fact that your own culture and language no longer bears any relevance or has any value.

The English, who are undoubtedly the masters of the game when it comes to the art of cultural and linguistic imperialism, did it successfully to the Scottish, the Welsh and the Irish, all of whom had and spoke their own distinct languages until they were conquered
and subjugated and turned into vassal states.

Today few of the Scottish, Welsh and Irish people are able to speak their native languages anymore. The language that they all speak now is english, the language of their oppressors.

Those that imposed and established hausa as the lingua franca in the north and those that seek to establish it as the lingua franca of Nigeria know what they are doing and why they are doing it: and so do their British and, more recently, American friends and allies.

There is a long-term game plan unfolding and a not-so-hidden agenda. Yet sadly it is only those that are discerning, insightful, incisive and historically-literate that can possibly grasp or see it.

It is not for the dull, the unenlightened, the uneducated or the slow. Such souls cannot possibly grasp or understand such complex issues and one can hardly blame them for that because they are simply ignorant.

It is points like this that those in our country that know no better and that believe that hausa is just a "unique language" which should be spoken and adopted by all in our nation fail to comprehend.

Such people fail to appreciate the fact that if you take a man's language and faith away and super-impose another on him, for whatever reason, that man loses his identity, his heritage, his culture and his history and he becomes absolutely nothing.

Once that is achieved he is successfully stripped bare of who and what he once was and all memory of the past is erased. That is tragic.

From the 18th century when the Caliphate was established in northern Nigeria the forceful imposition of islam and the hausa language were used by the Fulani as tools of conquest and what the French describe as the "raison d'etra" (which means "rationale") to dominate and rule over the people of that region.

They used both to reduce the so-called "minorities" of the north to slavery and servitude. They also used both to humiliate them and bring them to their knees.

It was brutal and ugly and it continued right up until the time that there was no more resistance and it was accepted as the norm.

Now they want to do the same thing to the rest of Nigeria. Many fail to appreciate or recognize this because they are shallow.

Yet a failure to fully grasp or appreciate such things will eventually lead to nothing less than slavery.

May God open our eyes, may He continue to guide us and may He give us courage and understanding. Shalom.

    1. I never used to like FFK but am beginning to have deep love for his insights and grasp of things. This article should be read by all, it's 1000% correct. I also congratulate him for being man enough to admit that the Yoruba's fought on the wrong side during the war. Just seat and think for a moment how prosperous Southern Nigeria would have been today without the north. Just think.

  5. teach dem broda. this is how north Africa was invaded by arabs because of uncle tom black mallams who do the dirty work for the arabs like enslaving or attacking their fellow non-mallam brodas. instead of fighting "arab colonialism" in Africa these black mallams dont know that arabs look down on us and our rich culture.

  15. What is really the matter with this soul called FFK. His hatred for anything north knows no limit.
Today this guy is the defender of the south but we all know what he wrote about GEJ and the Igbos during his short stint in the APC. But creating this level of disunity with his hate speech and incitement call for concern and this is something that should be condemned by all.

  26. I grew up believing that the entire north was Hausa. I was shocked to later find out that there were several other tribes there with their own unique and beautiful culture. However, they've all been overshadowed by Hausa/Fulani. What a shame. Thank God the Yorubas were able to stop the Hausa/Fulani domination extending beyond Ilorin.

  31. FFK will ever be remembered as the man who speaks from both sides of his mouth. Do you think Nigerians are that daft to be telling them fake history. Where did you get all your stupid facts from? If so why do we speak english in Nigeria today? Why didn't the english men held onto their language and allow us communicate in our local dialect. Ffk you're a phatetic liar which you're known for and I can see that you're still bitter about your arrest and humiliation.

  34. Typical signs of paranoia shcizo, 'when a person first experiences a phone call and start to say spirits transfer the signals, lol' I doubt Mark Zuck paid a quarter attention to making those statements as compared with the hours of brain searching FFK has put into critizing it. any normal person would know it was a personal opinion of his, from maybe the way the language comes off to him, while FFK is unhappy that someone called out his unwarranted charade, he's been doing the same to the government, mark and a whole tribe of people from as far back as he learnt how to type. when he donates even a little of his income to the development of civilization he can speak, i dare him to donate 1 million naira (far less proportional to what Mark zuck has spent) to the development of ICT in even his home state (cause i know the country would be a far cry) then he can start to talk. ironically the British that he's so quick to insult form the basis of the way he can communicate with us right now. this is 2016, no one is thinking about wars, fights, the ignorant actions of uncivilized past. we know better now, we keep those sentiments aside, we think progressively, how can we move forward otherwise.(doubt a known looter that seeks validation from rabble rousing, saying unintelligent things intelligently and garnering support from those that know less would understand that). I'm yoruba with many good hausa friends that would go the extra mile even more than a fellow yoruba would, without expecting anything in return, they are good people, less selfish and mostly honest. of course every tribe, race has their bad eggs and the problem in the world begins when a whole group is associated with the terrible behaviour of a few. what he's doing now is similar to racism to that tribe, what we're all quick to complain about. let the bad history bury itself in it's failure and evil. we know better now and don't need any association with it. Mark Zucks projects have been helping developing nations from his personal income, something i doubt FFK has nor will ever do, Facebook has helped FFK's life in too many ways, all his controversial statements are broadcasted there, the internet he's using is due to sacrifices of those 'imperialist' he loves to talk about, advancement, economy and democracy also come from those sources, left to people like FFK we'lld probably be using smoke messages still by now. FFK, Sir, settle your fraud charges, use some of your resources for see-able advancement and you would be celebrated. Rabble rousing would not get you so far neither would sowing seeds of discord. and i think Reno took the right approach in all this. WE CELEBRATE MARK ZUCKERBERG!

  39. Gospel truth from FFK, l use to wonder as a kid in Borno state we don't have indigenous Hausa speaking people yet, NTA and d state TV cast news in Hausa language. When I ask why I was told because we have a lot of indigenous languages in the state. But, there was a time when the state TV cast news in the local language's of Borno indigenes, eg. Marghi, Bura, Kibagu Kanuri etc

  40. uncle FFK what did the British used on Nigeria-language and Christianity that was why i believe you and your children may not be able to speak Yoruba language unlike the Hausa who resist vehemently till date and cherish their language. you refuse to know that those who brought Christianity to us also rule with brutality in terms of slave trade which is worst that any form of crime sum together in the history of mankind.

The white men who preach gospel of your lord and savoir to us destroyed a lot of African families of which till date Africans in diaspora are still searching for their
place of origin. You forgot to know what goes round comes round, there is no easy to conquered people, even in bible wars were fought with children and aged not spared as instructed in the bible, but the Quran state categorically that you must not kill children, aged, farms and women and do not transgress, though opposite is what is happening in the Islamic world today. but our uncle should learn to tolerant other people and accept them for what they are not to undermine there existence as human being. the era of conquest is gone.
