Bag of rice may sell for N40,000 by December- Minister of state for Agriculture says

Minister of State for Agriculture, Lokpobiri Heinekein says if Nigeria fails to begin the process of producing its own rice, the cost of a bag of rice may shoot up to about N40,000 by December this year. He said this at a town hall meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state this yesterday September 10th.
"For your information, we spend about $22bn a year importing food into Nigeria. We know how many more dollars they bought and that is why you see the price of rice going up. Price of rice was may be N12,000 some months ago, but it is now about N26,000 and if we don’t start producing, by December it could be N40,000.
Rice matures in three months. So, this is a wake up call for Bayelsa people to take the four farms we have seriously. The federal government has four farms in the state in our records. The average land you see in Bayelsa can grow rice, so the colonial masters were not wrong in their assessment when they said Niger Delta could feed not only Nigerian but also the entire West Africa sub-region. Unfortunately, agriculture till today, is not a priority of the Niger Delta as far as the state governments are concerned because of oil”he said

  9. If rice matures in three months and you and your government has been in power for over 15 months, what does that suggest? Cluelessness, incompetence, lack of vision. Shame on your party. Be bold to tell the president to resign!

  14. mister minister, have you been to Bayelsa before? so you will encourage rice to be produced in an area that is polluted with oil. a state that does not have one single sachet water company because of pollution, how can it then produce rice that will feed the entire west African sub region. i am just pondering?

  28. Statements like this are capable of pushing the price that high in one month. People will start panic buying. This government is killing our economy with their unguarded statements.

Mr minister, can you explain the premise for reaching this conclusion.

  29. Thank u all 4 ur opinion, but I think it is not d minister ir APC dat something is wrong with rather it is us Nigerians who don't have d mentality of production but only consumption. We don't know how 2 create wealth but only interested in living fake & high life dat is not backed up by production power. Imagine if Linda Ikeji had not been creative about her life, waiting on & complaining about one govt or d other of bringing food 2 her dinning table life some of u fools have shouting, would she b where she is 2day? Isreal & Japan had no natural endowment yet they made the best out of their lives. Continue 2 wait 4 govt, u think God is a fool like. Am sorry & surprise @ u Linda, u are not helping dis people by not telling them the truth. What is it in minister's statement dat is wrong? Giving a clarion call 2 embrace agriculture which is d bedrock of every nation or telling Dem the consequences if they fail to take action, which of it is wrong? Tell mi? Linda tell ur people d hard truth, biko.

  31. This is nonsense. Nigeria cannot exponentially expand the production and distribution of rice without improved farming technology, better agricultural research, ROADS and TRAINS to facilitate transportation of goods, storage facilities, processing plants, and security (no Herdsmen raiding farms). These are the things that the government needs to be investing in and talking about if they are really serious about local production. If they are not, which seems to be the case, they should stop confiscating rice and let Nigerians buy it at a reasonable price, people have to eat!

  34. How did we get to this point. This evil scam change government is so clueless and incompetent that one can see it .Buhari and his sawdust brain ministers should resign if they can't find solution to this hardship. People are dying of hunger and starvation and there's no solution in sight. But is it not mind boggling that Tinubu, who foist this evil bad luck devil has not utter any word to appeal to Nigerians or condemn the evil policies of cowBuhari government
