Police re-arrest Man who named pet dog 'Buhari', to arraign him in court

The Ogun State Police Command has rearrested Joe Chinakwe, the man who named his pet dog Buhari (read here). He would be arraigned in court on Monday.

According to the state’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, Chinakwe, who was earlier released a few days ago, was picked up again based on the belief that the suspect’s action was capable of provoking an ethnic religious crisis. He said,

“The man is here with us. He is at the Criminal Investigation Department. The charge will be prepared here and he will be arraigned at Sango Magistrate Court on Monday.
He is going to court on Monday because what he did was highly provocative. It can cause an ethnic and religious crisis. We have to be proactive, we cannot fold our arms and allow the state to be plunged into crisis. In fact, the arrest was made to save the suspect’s life because the complainant and his group have threatened to kill him if he comes back and this may trigger violence.”

  70. Well, this issue is contestible in an open court of human conscience and rational reasoning. First, the complainant is a foreigner, a Niger Republic man, who is possibly an illegal immigrant into this country. Imagine the folly of having such a person institute the arrest of a citizen over an issue that does not concern him. Second, the name Buhari is a common name like Paul, George etc. The defendant didn't name his dog Muhammadu Buhari, which I feel is the full name of our dear president. Third, the police left a man who threatened to kill another and arrested the one threatened. That's really shameful and regreattable. Typical of Nigerian police men and women, you get abused, intimidated for no just reason. I was driving along a road and on getting to a round about, I slowed down because of traffic jam. On slowing down, I looked through my door and saw some police officers and road safety personnel seated on a canopy. Immediately, a police woman caught sight of me and ran after me. As there was a traffic jam, approached and opened my car door. I inquired what the matter was, and she retorted "why did I look at her like that"? I said like how? How do you mean? She parked me and said I should produce my papers and license. I obliged and she warned me after going through, without checking if what was on the paper corresponded with the one on the car never to look at police like that again. I was actually lost in confusion about what this fellow meant. Well, that's what we see in Nigeria. I drove off and was wondering where to look at the next time...Lol. Finally, having sued this man to court, let's see how this case gets handled.

We keep trying to humour them while they keep looking for more ways to make us second class citizens in our own country. They design policies to suit themselves and glibly change it when its not to their advantage - federal character, educationally disadvantaged, Land Use Act,and so on. We say we operate a federal system of government; yet states are not autonomous enough to keep their resources but some states are autonomous enough to institute sharia law. Please wake up.

The complainnant's surname is Buhari and this 'victim'named his dog buhari after a quarrel with the complainnant. So the 'buhari' in question is not that if Mr.president. But somehow we have managed to hang this issue on the president's neck and the bloggers see no reason in putting the facts out there for the people. 97. This foolish govt should release the man with immediate effect. Anybody has the right to name their pets with names they like. People name their dog Jimmy which is a name people use. So, i tell Buhari to release him immediately or it will create an atmosphere for Nigerians to start naming their pets after Buhari

  102. But what is happening in this country of ours? How can any one support that a man be arrested cos someone else thinks he shldnt have named his pet after his father? Was his father customised for that name alone? This is pure injustice. Did he name the dog after the full names of his stupid father? And those of you in support of this rubbish, what differentiates you from DONALD Trump? Christ, save us ooo! When Obasanjo was mocked directly and called a monkey by our comedians, how many of them did our yoruba men and women reported to the station for ridiculing a whole president? Or did Obasanho order their arrest? What is wrong with the animals called hausa's gan sef? This is just so wrong..pls. Chai,i hardly talk on social networks but I couldn't help saying something on this issue. Na wa o. God bless Nigeria. If u decide to name ur rat Tosin, good luck to u.. does that make me a rat? Smh lol. It doesn't even stop me from being the best! Mehn... God help us all

  103. All of you commenting here are just senseless idiots. Go and read the original story and digest it properly before commenting foolishly and ignorantly here. This has nothing to do with President Buhari. The man that reported the case to the police said his own father's name is Buhari and his neighbour just want to make jest of him by tagging his dog Buhari stating that his neighbour has no respect for his father, who is also called Buhari. This is why you people fail exams in school. You cannot read and understand simple post
